Actually ... conspiracy theories seem to go back almost
as far as civilzation. According to a recent BBC article
they used to be far more common, likely because info
was a lot harder to find (no google). Anyone who could
tweak your natural paranoias - and life WAS often very
bad back in the day, people WERE out to get you - could
plant a conspiracy meme in your brain.

Odd factoid, conspiracy theories used to be more common
amongst the power elite - convinced the mob or usurpers
were plotting against them (probably WERE too). However
in the 20th century this flipped and now the Joe Averages
were seeing vast conspiracies by the big governments
and wealth groups. Joe no longer felt in control, "they"
had become too big and powerful.
