The story is rubbish. They're related to people in Siberia and the Americas but at the same time genetically isolated and didn't interbreed.

It's not saying what you think it says, and they are far too recent to be that important to the peopling of the Americas.

Fact is, the closer you get to the present, the more DNA lines go extinct. It's really not surprising that their DNA really only bears similarity to populations
which were isolated themselves. What would be surprising is if we expanded
the data, including samples from DNA representing the entire region, and we didn't find a great more similar lines.

DNA just plain doesn't work the way the media tells us it works...

"But a new study of the mummies’ DNA finds they were locals with deep
    roots in the
region. Indeed, they appear to be relics of an ancient population that disappeared in
Eurasia after the last ice age—one that was ancestral to Indigenous
    peoples living in
    Siberia and the Americas today.

"It’s “fantastic” to learn that these mummies were local Asians, says Alison Betts, an
archaeologist of Scottish descent at the University of Sydney who was not involved with
    the work. "

Barber's very good 1999 "The Mummies of Urumchi" had little on DNA work as
    the tools
    weren't available yet.

Yes. Much ado about weaves. I like the deeper focus on the buffalo boat coffins, this culture was at least part-time maritime despite being inland desert dwellers. There is a link to the kudru bowl boats of Tibet, made with wicker and greased buffalo
    skin.
