Uh, during the dry season all/many species were waterside, moron.

I can only think of two reasons why we would find the fossils of multiple hominids in these caves and an absence of other species, and the latter is more likely in my opinion. Either they occupied those caves frequently and removed carcasses of other
species or, more likely, they went in there as a desperate measure to escape predators (and then were unable to get out).

I'm shocked. I mean, that is a sound idea.

The fires they now claim to find EVERYWHERE don't actually make
any sense, except maybe as an attempt to drive the lil' buggers
out of or deeper into the cave system.

    "Fumigation."

According to the present narrative, the excavators literally dragged
themselves across the remains of some fires just to reach the
Naledi cavern. Why on earth would they set fires between themselves
and the outside of the cave?

"Let's trap ourselves inside a confined space, forcing ourselves to
    breath smoke."

Maybe they had fire, I doubt it, and maybe another species was using
    fire against them.

Possibly. There may also be more practical reasons for fire, like cooking and warmth.

There's no "Practical" reason for fires between you and the
entrance, except to keep in or keep out.

And lighting a fire deep inside a cave is a VERY practical
    means for suffocating...
