    Consensus in archaeology has posited:
    - mechanically propelled weapons (bow+arrow, spear-thrower+dart) appeared abruptly in the Eurasian record: with the arrival of anat.+behav.modern humans & Upper Paleolithic (UP) after 45 to 42 ka ago,
    - evidence for weapon use during the preceding Middle Paleolithic (MP) in Eurasia remains sparse.
The ballistic features of MP points suggest: they were used on hand-cast spears,
UP lithic weapons are focused on microlithic technologies, commonly interpreted as mechanically propelled projectiles, a crucial innovation distinguishing UP societies from preceding ones.

Here, we present the earliest evidence for mechanically propelled projectile technology in Eurasia from Layer-E of Grotte Mandrin 54 ka in Medit.France, demonstrated via use-wear & impact damage analyses.
These technologies, ass.x the oldest modern human remains currently known from Europe, represent the technical background of these populations during their first incursion into the continent.

Determining the extent of overlap between Hs & other hominins in Eurasia (Neanderthals, Denisovans) is fundamental to understanding
    - the nature of their interactions,
    - what led to the disappearance of archaic hominins.
Apart from a possible sporadic pulse recorded in mid-Pleistocene Greece, Hs first settlements in Europe have been constrained to ~45 to 43 ka.

Here, we report hominin fossils from Grotte Mandrin that reveal the earliest known Hs in Europe between 56.8 & 51.7 ka.
This early Hs incursion in the Rhône Valley is ass.x technologies unknown in any industry of that age outside Africa or the Levant.
Mandrin documents the first alternating occupation of Hn & Hs:
a Hs fossil & associated Neronian lithic industry was found stratigraphically between layers containing Hn remains ass.x Mousterian industries.

It's excessively unlikely they were anything but a hybrid.

Cro Magnon differ from the Africans they supposedly stem
from, and they differ because of interbreeding... probably
within the Levant. They were already "Different" before they
    entered Europe proper.

Of course, the Mediterranean was a lot smaller back then,
and it's as likely or more likely a route into Europe than what
    would be overland today.
