‘Tropical forests in the deep human past’
compiled and edited by Eleanor M.L. Scerri, Patrick Roberts, S. Yoshi Maezumi and Yadvinder Malhi
When we think of human evolution, we often think of sweeping savannahs as the crucial arena for the development of upright walking and stone tool use that set our lineage on a path that would change the world forever. By contrast, tropical rainforests
were the hostile environments that we ‘left behind’. This theme issue brings together leading specialists from around the world, from a variety of disciplines, and using a variety of methods, to demonstrate the long-term importance of tropical
rainforests to the human story. From early interactions between human ancestors and rainforests in Africa to the critical role of these habitats in our species’ movement Out of Africa, these agenda-setting papers seek to reshape academic and public
understanding of tropical rainforests as critical parts of what it means to be human.

(CNN) More than 12,000 years ago, South America was teeming with an astonishing array of ice age beasts -- giant ground sloths the size of a car, elephantine herbivores and a deerlike animal with an elongated snout.
