So a few weeks ago I mentioned starting a project for Nailshooter.

One month and 4 days later it is done!

The cabinet major sections dry fit.

The inside of the upper cabinets, there will be 3 adjustable shelves for
    each side.

    And the shelf details.

    Very nice, as usual.

I forget what it's for so I have to ask: Why the lip on the shelves?

I like the look, but wonder if it'll be a nuisance.

I forget what it's for so I have to ask: Why the lip on the shelves?

To hide the edge and to make the front and back edges of the shelf stiffer.

Plus, it allowed me to index the piece with no worry of slipping in the
clamps and no mechanical fasteners to hold it in place.

I like the look, but wonder if it'll be a nuisance.

It sticks up 1/8", I rounded the inner edge to make dragging objects
    over the lip smoother.

This is actually what the customer, Nailshooter, wanted.

When I said "I forget what it's for" I meant the overall piece of furniture, not the
edging itself. If I ever forget what shelf edging is for, especially on plywood, it'll
be time to hang up the tools. ;-)

I was specifically asking about the lip and why it was incorporated into the piece.

The "dragging" is what concerned me, but if that's what the client wants, that's what you give him (within reason).

    LOL, A hutch/pantry.

I was specifically asking about the lip and why it was incorporated into the piece.

It makes the edging thicker, a full inch, top to bottom, and self aligns.

I'll add that the only 1/4" plywood is on the back panels. The drawers
are all 1/2" Baltic birch, sides and bottom.

And the doors have 1/2" Baltic birch for the center panels. Easier to
get a solid fit and better fitting joints.

When cutting the groves for the joints for typical 1/4" panels I have to
run the rails and stiles on edge over the flat cut blade and then flip
end for end to sneak up on the width to fit the panel.

IF the wood is not perfectly straight the grove ends up being narrow in
    spots.

With the thicker panel, I used the inner and outer dado blade to make a
1/4" grove in one pass and the grove is exact width the entire distance.
Then I rabbet the back side of the 1/2" panel to fit the groves. This
worked out great. In the future I will likely, after probably 700 or so
doors, use at least 3/8" plywood for the panels if I am not building
    raised panel doors.
