    If you are making an umbrella be sure to have an open flap type so the center of the cloth flies open in wind and doesn't catch the large canvas.

    Have you tried chain link fence railing parts? I think the rails of some ar 1-3/8" OD. Not sure what you have but since its wood....
    I recall seeing this joint on many stair railings.
    Just a thought.

    Keep your eyes peeled on the curb on garbage day - seems to be a good
    supply of junked umbrelllas - particularly after wind storms.
