Why aren't these groups popular anymore?
Dilution mainly, & in the case of the younger generation, lack of
animated gifs, & utterly useless Android/iOS clients. We used to just
have usenet, gopher, IRC & maybe a BBS or two. Then an endless stream
of alternatives came along, & people naturally migrated to whichever
they preferred.
Here in the UK, the Boards magazine forum became the go-to place. But
that crashed earlier this year & the current owners (Mpora) are too
busy posting wanky childish cycling memes to Facebook to bother fixing
it. So the traffic's now further diluted across mainly regional
Facebook groups, & all the benefits of a 'national' forum have been
lost.
