• Sail Size Recommendation

From ifzuniga64@gmail.com@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jul 10 03:22:28 2016
I have a Mistral Escape (190L) and I own a very large sail. My daughter is interested in the sport, but the sail I own is too large for her.

Where we live the winds are 7-10 knots and she weights ~ 120 lbs. I found recommended sail size charts but they still guide me to large sails which makes it difficult for her to handle.

    Any recommendations?

No recommendations, but my experience has been that each 20 pounds of
body weight is good for about a half or .6 meters of sail.

e.g. If somebody who weighs 170 is out there planing on a 6.5 and I
weigh 210# - I would need a 7.5 to get the same effect.

So maybe you could extrapolate downwards from a sail size that is
comfortable for you in the target conditions.

When I teach college students of similar stature they've been learning on 4.5 or 4.9 single-batten school sails from Aerotech. We have very similar conditions on Lake Washington. This is plenty of sail to get them up to intermediate level - even
harness and (longboard) footstraps. You might look at the Aerotech "WindSUP" rigs which come complete and are competitively priced.

Once she's more skilled she'll be interested in a 6.0 - 8.0 for those conditions.
