• unable to hear MPEG2 video audio over HDMI

I just finished transferring a bunch of VHS tapes over the MPEG2. I am
using an Asus media player to play the resulting files from a hard drive attached to the player over the TV. I first tried my preference, HDMI,
but, although I can see video, I am unable to hear sound. The only way
I have been able to hear sound is to use the composite video-audio
outputs from the Asus into the TV. The videos play just fine on any of
my computers. I checked the encoding and they are MPEG2 video with MPEG
audio format. What is the reason I cannot hear audio via HDMI and what
    is the remedy? Thanks.

    You're using a hardware player?

On computers, the problem is likely that the sound is being sent to the
wrong interface. I've had issues where Windows wants to send sound to HDMI,
but the adapter I'm using (HDMI-to-VGA) doesn't translate sound, so you have
to go into the Control Panel and force sound to output via the speaker jack.
