• Yokozuna Rankings after January 2024

From Louis Epstein@21:1/5 to All on Fri Feb 9 20:14:37 2024
The reactivation of Terunofuji means the reactivation of
this periodic posting, though his rank among yokozuna in
makuuchi wins did not change with this 13-2 yusho his
overall rank in makuuchi wins did improve though only
enough to bring him into the top 140.

I think it's wonderul that Terunofuji is approaching the minimum
definition for dai-yokozuna. I wonder if he uses that sense of the term as
he considers how to balance his knee health and his desire to fight more?
There definitely is a subset of fans who assume that he wishes to hit ten
wins before he can save his knees and retire.

On the other side of the coin we have THIS list...
most career LOSSES by a rikishi (all divisions)...

    Kyokutenho 944
    Terao 937
    Oshio 929
    Aminishiki 908
    Takamiyama 845
    Aobajo 842
    Fujizakura 827
    Sawaisamu 814+
    Ozutsu 809
    Kotoinazuma 802
    Kirinji 792
    Kaiki 790
    Kurama 788
    Hanakaze 788
    Tamawashi 784+
    Wakanosato 783
    Mitoizumi 766
    Kotonowaka 764
    Akinoshima 757
    Takamisugi 753

Only winners of 400 are covered
    except Sawaisamu;
everyone on above list won at least 683 (Hanakaze)
except Sawaisamu...who has 396,generally in the
    basement jonokuchi division.
He just went 0-7 for the fifteenth time and
extended his record for make-koshi basho to 147
(no one else has more than 120).

    But he hasn't retired!

    But he hasn't retired!

He just had an uncharacteristically good basho at
3-4,his best result since 2022,and will likely be
near the top of jonokuchi rather than the bottom
for May.His make-koshi basho record of course
extends to 148 and his victory total reached 399
(one more and he will be on Sumodb's list amid
all the winners with far fewer losses).

Tamawashi lost 8 and reached 807 wins,624 of them
in makuuchi (573 of Sawaisamu's 818 defeats are
    in jonokuchi).

Itakozakura went 0-7 and neared the loss-leader-list
with his 121st make-koshi basho (second to Sawaisamu)
and a 511-724 career record (but 548 of his losses
    are in Jonidan,including his latest).
