    [continued from previous message]

Buffalo Sabres missed the playoffs (with the worst record in the league) and he was fired at season's end and joined HNIC's crew full-time for 87-88. I'm not sure if John Garrett had any playoff assignments that year. He did a little bit of regular
season work for HNIC in 86-87, but mostly as a 3rd man in the booth. He became a regular the following season. These playoffs marked the last HNIC assignments for Jim Robson, Howie Meeker, and Gary Dornhoefer.

I remember the Stanley Cup '87 coverage on Global--I watched on CKVU Vancouver (or VU13, as it was then known). I actually came across Game 6 of Montreal-Quebec by accident, just flipping through the channels, and was delighted to find the game.
Actually, it was during an intermission and they were showing bonus coverage of Philly-NYI. I saw a close up picture on my TV of Ron Hextall getting ready for a face-off. I figured that they also televised games 3 and 4 and I was just unaware of it,
but your explanation clears that up.

Well, TSN's NHL coverage was sparse until 87-88--they had no contract with the NHL and only acquired games a la carte. As far as I can remember, he did work for CBC during the regular season up until 1987. From 1987 onward, he worked for TSN full time.
As for Jim Robson, this was his first work with CBC since the 1985 playoffs. He then also worked the Calgary-Edmonton series in 1988 for Global/Stanley Cup '88 while Dan Kelly was committed to the Blues local playoff coverage.

It should also be noted that these were the first playoffs with Ron MacLean in the lead host position, as he replaced Dave Hodge mid-season due to the famous "pencil incident". Hodge was "banished" to west coast telecasts for the remainder of the
season, at which point I think his contract ran out and he was not kept on for the playoffs. This freed him to work on Global's Stanley Cup '87 coverage.

Not fully sure on this series' arrangement, but here is my theory: CBC had exclusive rights to televise in Winnipeg and Edmonton thru the Molson exclusivity in these cities. TSN was granted permission to televise to the rest of Canada under the Carling/O'
Keefe banner. If this is wrong, please let me know.

    DIVISIONAL FINALS

    Capitals-Devils
Game 1, 4/18, CBC (JIP). Chris Cuthbert
    Game 2, 4/20, No telecast
    Game 3, 4/22, No telecast
    Game 4, 4/24, No telecast
    Game 5, 4/26, No telecast
Game 6, 4/28, CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale
Game 7, 4/30, CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale

Note: Chris Cuthbert was assigned by CBC to report updates on the 4/18 game. However, when the Quebec blackout affected CBC coverage of the BOS-MTL game, the network decided to throw to Cuthbert and the solitary camera beside him in his coverage position
to work the remainder of this game. It was totally done off the cuff. There were no graphics, no replay capabilities, no analyst.

    Canadiens-Bruins
Game 1, 4/18, CBC (1st period only). Bob Cole, Scotty Bowman, Dick Irvin
Game 2, 4/18, CBC. Bob Cole, Scotty Bowman, Dick Irvin
Game 3, 4/22, CBC. Bob Cole, Scotty Bowman, Dick Irvin
Game 4, 4/24, CBC. Bob Cole, Scotty Bowman, Dick Irvin
Game 5, 4/26, CBC. Bob Cole, Scotty Bowman, Dick Irvin

Note: On 4/18 at 8:08 PM, The was a power outage in the province of Quebec. While darkness enveloped Montreal and the Forum itself, the Forum's reserve generators kicked into gear only to illuminate the rink surface with enough power to keep the game
moving. CBC was left with no choice but to abandon coverage.

    Red Wings-Blues
    Game 1, 4/19, No telecast
    Game 2, 4/21, No telecast
    Game 3, 4/23, No telecast
    Game 4, 4/25, No telecast
Game 5, 4/27, CanWest/Global. Dan Kelly, John Davidson

    Oilers-Flames
Game 1, 4/19. CanWest-Global: Dan Kelly, John Davidson. CBC: Don Wittman, Harry Neale.

Game 4, 4/25. CanWest-Global: Dan Kelly, John Davidson. CBC: Don Wittman, Harry Neale.

Note: CW/Global aired this series nationally, except for the Edmonton and Calgary markets, where CBC retained exclusive rights.

    CONFERENCE FINALS

    Bruins-Devils
Game 1, 5/2, CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale
Game 2, 5/4, CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale
Game 3, 5/6, CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale
Game 4, 5/8, CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale
Game 5, 5/10, CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale
Game 6, 5/12, CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale
Game 7, 5/14, CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale

Note: After Game 3, there was an incident between Devils coach Jim Schoenfeld and referee Don Koharski. It was heated and it ended with the infamous insult (something about donuts and pigs) from Schoenfeld to Koharski. The NHL suspended Schoenfeld
indefinitely. The Devils actually took the suspension to court, where they issued a restraining order, just minutes before game time. Incensed by the order, the on-ce officials for Game 4, refused to work the game, in essence, staging a wildcat strike.
An emergency call went out to get on-ice officials, and they were found. The game was delayed by about an hour due to the bizarre situation.

    Oilers-Red Wings
Game 1, 5/3, CanWest-Global. Dan Kelly, John Davidson
Game 2, 5/5, CanWest-Global. Dan Kelly, John Davidson
Game 3, 5/7, CanWest-Global. Dan Kelly, John Davidson
Game 4, 5/9, CanWest-Global. Dan Kelly, John Davidson
Game 5, 5/11, CanWest-Global. Dan Kelly, John Davidson

    STANLEY CUP FINAL

    Oilers-Bruins
Game 1, 5/18, CanWest-Global. Dan Kelly, John Davidson
Game 2, 5/20, CanWest-Global. Dan Kelly, John Davidson
Game 3, 5/22, CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale
Game 4, 5/24 (suspended st 17:37 of the second period), CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale
Game 4, 5/26 (replayed), CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale

Note: The 5/24 game was suspended when a transformer blew at the Boston Garden and it was feared the generator would only hold out another 30 minutes. Thus, the game was called off. Game 4 was replayed in Edmonton. Had the series gone a full seven games,
game 5 (CBC) would have returned to Boston, Game 6 (CanWest-Global) back to Edmonton and Game 7 (CBC & CanWest-Global) would have been played in Boston. The Oilers would have still held home ice advantage with games 1, 2, 4, and 6 at the Northlands
    Coliseum.

    I thought I'd give this a whirl.

Below is a listing of all the 1989 Stanley Cup playoff crews, both Canada and the U.S. by series. Lists are courtesy of jtgrace1 and additional research by YT.

Teams listed first had home-ice advantage. All game in best of 7, 2-2-1-1-1 format.

"No telecast" means exactly NO telecast in Canada. In the U.S. it means no national telecast, but the game waslikely televised, at least to the visiting team's market, which is not included.

    "SCAM" = SportsChannel America

    (TD) - Tape delayed

For the 1st round it was Penguins-Rangers, not Penguins-Flyers.

Never saw a second of the 1989 playoffs since I didn't have SC America.

SCAM would use the Foley-Tallon call for the 1990 (I think) and 1992 (I know) Campbell Conference Finals

Yep. SC-Chicago produced the SCAM coverage for the 1990 series (of which only the road games were shown in Chicago because of the old man's selfishness--the home games were given minute-or-so live look-ins as "bonus coverage"). They also produced the
1992 series (of which the road games were on SC-C and the home games on a PPV basis called "HawkVision"--later derisively nicknamed "WirtzVision" and also "PotterVision" [see Life, It's a Wonderful]).

When the old man insisted that the home games of the Cup Finals be on PPV, that was what soured me on him. The following year, the old man trotted out HawkVision for a second year. Except this time, ABC wound up showing two of the games, including one
home game (which the old man couldn't stop WLS from showing), and the Hawks wound up getting swept. From then on, I took pleasure in poking fun at the old man and celebrating every time his team lost.

That's pretty close to the way I remember about it, but a couple of comments:

I am POSITIVE that the Smythe Division Semifinals crews for CBC were as follows:

    Flames-Canucks
Game 1, 4/5, CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale
Game 2, 4/6, CBC. Bob Cole, Harry Neale
Game 3, 4/8, CBC. Bob Cole, John Garrett
Game 4, 4/9, CBC. Bob Cole, John Garrett
Game 5, 4/11, CBC. Bob Cole, John Garrett
Game 6, 4/13, CBC. Bob Cole, John Garrett
Game 7, 4/15, CBC. Bob Cole, John Garrett

    Kings-Oilers
Game 1, 4/5, CBC. Don Wittman, John Garrett
Game 2, 4/6, CBC. Don Wittman, John Garrett
Game 3, 4/8, CBC. Don Wittman, Harry Neale
Game 4, 4/9, CBC. Don Wittman, Harry Neale
Game 5, 4/11, CBC. Don Wittman, Harry Neale
Game 6, 4/13, CBC. Don Wittman, Harry Neale
Game 7, 4/15, CBC. Don Wittman, Harry Neale

Why they decided to switch Garrett and Neale between games 2 and 3, I don't know, but they did.

Also, I believe the TSN crew was Hughson and Roger Neilson. Neilson was paired with Hughson during the regular season and Gary Green was there beginning the next year. Now it's possible that Green came aboard in the playoffs that year, I don't know,
but my guess would be Neilson.

And also, I thought that Scotty Bowman was on the Montreal series in rounds 2 and 3 with Cole and Irvin, while Neale was with Wittman on the Calgary series. Maybe I'm remembering wrong.

    djob,

Thanks for your assistance. I do have a couple of questions...

    1. Does this mean that Chris Cuthbert was idle for the first round? Or did he do studio work perchance for HNIC?

    2. I dug thru the Toronto Star archives about a year ago. This was what I found...
Jim Hughson was pretty much the pxp guy thruout the 88-89 season. Jim Van Horne was studio host thruout as well. It seemed like for the 1988 part of the season, Roger Neilson and Gary Green swapped booth analyst and studio analyst roles almost on a game
    by game basis.

Then, at the outset of 1989, Neilson left TSN and Howie Meeker was brought back, strictly as studio analyst and Green went to partner with Hughson full time. Then with the playoffs, Meeker was dropped, and Neilson returned this time to the studio with
Van Horne and Green continued with Hughson.

Is this correct or is your recall of TSN's 88-89 NHL coverage different?

Your verification on this would be most helpful!

Yes, I believe Cuthbert did studio work in the Edmonton/LA, Calgary/LA, and Calgary/Chicago series. At that time he was the #4 play-by-play man on CBC's depth chart and they were only covering 3 first-round series. The following year (1990), he did
play-by-play in the first round Calgary/LA series.

TSN's NHL coverage was sparse until 87-88--they had no contract with the NHL and only acquired games a la carte. As far as I can remember, he did work for CBC during the regular season up until 1987. From 1987 onward, he worked for TSN full time. As
for Jim Robson, this was his first work with CBC since the 1985 playoffs.

TSN was granted permission to televise to the rest of Canada under the Carling/
O'Keefe banner. If this is wrong, please let me know.

    Note:
On 4/18 at 8:08 PM, The was a power outage in the province of Quebec. While darkness enveloped Montreal and the Forum itself, the Forum's reserve generators kicked into gear only to illuminate the rink surface with enough power to keep the game moving.

After Game 3, there was an incident between Devils coach Jim Schoenfeld and referee Don Koharski. It was heated, and it ended with the infamous insult ("Have Another Donut") from Schoenfeld to Koharski. The NHL suspended Schoenfeld for 1 game. The
Devils actually took the suspension to court, where they issued a restraining order, just minutes before game time. Incensed by the order, the on-ice officials for Game 4, refused to work the game, in essence, staging a wildcat strike. An emergency call
went out to get on-ice officials, and they were found. The game was delayed by over 67 minutes due to the bizarre situation.

also had the rights to Games 6 and 7 of the Finals (Game 7 would have been produced separately by CBC & CanWest-Global), which were not necessary.

    Note:

    Note:
The 5/24 game was suspended when a transformer blew at the Boston Garden and it was feared the generator would only hold out another 30 minutes. Thus, the game was called off. Game 4 was replayed in Edmonton. ESPN had the rights to air the rest of the
    series, which were not necessary.

In the U.S. it means no national telecast, but the game was likely televised, at least to the visiting team's market, which is not included.

I believe the TSN crew was Jim Hughson, Gary Green, and Roger Neilson. Hughson was pretty much the play-by-play guy throughout the 88-89 season. Jim Van Horne was studio host throughout as well. Gary Green and Roger Neilson swapped booth analyst and
studio analyst roles almost on a game by game basis. Then for the playoffs, Neilson returned to join Hughson and Green in the booth. Then, in the summer 1989, Neilson left TSN and Howie Meeker was brought back, strictly as studio analyst and Green went

    Notes:
Why they decided to switch John Garrett and Harry Neale between games 2 and 3, I don't know, but they did.
And also, I thought that Scotty Bowman was on the Montreal series in rounds 2 and 3 with Cole and Irvin, while Neale was with Wittman on the Calgary series. Maybe I'm remembering wrong.
Thanks for your assistance. I do have a couple of questions...
    1. Does this mean that Chris Cuthbert was idle for the first round? Or did he do studio work perchance for HNIC?
    2. I dug thru the Toronto Star archives about a year ago. This was what I found...
Jim Hughson was pretty much the play-by-play guy throughout the 88-89 season. Jim Van Horne was studio host throughout as well. Gary Green and Roger Neilson swapped booth analyst and studio analyst roles almost on a game by game basis. Then for the
playoffs, Neilson returned to join Hughson and Green in the booth. Then, in the summer 1989, Neilson left TSN and Howie Meeker was brought back, strictly as studio analyst and Green went to partner with Hughson full time.
Is this correct or is your recall of TSN's 88-89 NHL coverage different? Yes, I believe Cuthbert did studio work in the Edmonton/LA, Calgary/LA, and Calgary/Chicago series. At that time he was the #4 play-by-play man on CBC's depth chart and they were only covering 3 first-round series. The following year (1990), he did
play-by-play in the first round Calgary/LA series.

Never saw a second of the 1989 playoffs since I didn't have SportsChannel America. SportsChannel America would use the Foley-Tallon call for the 1990 (I think) and 1992 (I know) Campbell Conference Finals
Yep. SC-Chicago produced the SportsChannel America's coverage for the 1990 series (of which only the road games were shown in Chicago because of the old man's selfishness--the home games were given short live look-ins as "bonus coverage"). They also
produced the 1992 series (of which the road games were on SC-C and the home games on a PPV basis called "HawkVision"--later derisively nicknamed "WirtzVision" and also "PotterVision" [see Life, It's a Wonderful]).

I remember the Stanley Cup '87 coverage on Global--I watched on CKVU Vancouver (or VU13, as it was then known). I actually came across Game 6 of Montreal-Quebec by accident, just flipping through the channels, and was delighted to find the game. Actually,
it was during an intermission and they were showing bonus coverage of Philly-NYI. I saw a close up picture on my TV of Ron Hextall getting ready for a face-off. They did not televised Games 3 & 4, and your explanation clears that up.

Hodge was "banished" to west coast telecasts for the remainder of the season,
at which point I think his contract ran out and he was not kept on for the playoffs. This freed him to work on Global's Stanley Cup '87 coverage.

    Note:
On 4/18 at 8:08 PM, The was a power outage in the province of Quebec. While darkness enveloped Montreal and the Forum itself, the Forum's reserve generators kicked into gear only to illuminate the rink surface with enough power to keep the game moving.
Ultimately, CBC was left with no choice but to abandon coverage after the first period.

CBC assigned Chris Cuthbert to report updates on Game 1 of the New Jersey Devils-Washington Capitals series. However, when the Québec blackout cancelled CBC coverage of the BOS-MTL game after 1st period, CBC threw to him and the solitary camera beside
him in his coverage position to call the rest of the game. The whole process was totally done without notice. In other words, there were no graphics, no replay capabilities, and no analyst.

    Note:
After Game 3, there was a confrontation between New Jersey Devils coach Jim Schoenfeld and referee Don Koharski. It was heated, and it ended with Schoenfeld making the infamous insult “Good, ‘cause you fell you fat pig” and then “Have Another
Donut” to Koharski. The incident has since become part of NHL lore. Schoenfeld was suspended by NHL president John Ziegler and disciplinarian Brian O'Neill for Game 4, but the Devils received an injunction from a New Jersey court, allowing Schoenfeld
to coach the fourth game. In protest, the officials scheduled to work that game in the Meadowlands refused to take the ice, forcing the NHL to scramble for amateur officials to call the game. The game was delayed by over 67 minutes due to the bizarre
situation. The injunction was lifted, the league conducted a proper hearing, Schoenfeld served his suspension during Game 5 in the Boston Garden, and the League officials returned to work.

    Note:
In the United States, this was the final year under ESPN’s national three-year deal. Under the U.S. TV contracts that took effect beginning next season, SportsChannel America took over as the NHL's American television partner. ESPN’s coverage of the
1988 Cup Finals was blacked out locally in the Boston area due to WSBK and NESN's local rights to Bruins games.

The original game 4 was cancelled when a power outage occurred at the Boston Garden, and it was feared the generator would only hold out for another 30 minutes. Game 4 was replayed in Edmonton, which Edmonton Oilers won. ESPN also had the rights to air
the rest of the Stanley Cup Final, which were not necessary.

    1989

    I thought I'd give this a whirl.

Below is a listing of all the 1989 Stanley Cup playoff crews, both Canada and the U.S. by series. Lists are courtesy of jtgrace1 and additional research by YT.

Teams listed first had home-ice advantage. All game in best of 7, 2-2-1-1-1 format.

"No telecast" means exactly NO telecast in Canada. In the U.S. it means no national telecast, but the game was likely televised, at least to the visiting team's market, which is not included.

SportsChannel America used Pat Foley-Dale Tallon call for the 1990 and 1992 (I know) Campbell Conference Finals.

Yep. SportsChannel Chicago produced the SportsChannel America overage for the 1990 series (of which only the road games were shown in Chicago because of the old man's selfishness--the home games were given "bonus coverage"). They also produced the 1992
series (of which the road games were on SportsChannel Chicago and the home games on a PPV basis called "HawkVision"--later derisively nicknamed "WirtzVision" and also "PotterVision" [see Life, It's a Wonderful]).

Chris Cuthbert, Harry Neale
Game 4, 4/9, CBC. Chris Cuthbert, Harry Neale

Now it's possible that Green came aboard in the playoffs that year, I don't know, but
    my guess would be Neilson.

Thanks for your assistance. I do have a couple of questions...

    1. Does this mean that Chris Cuthbert was idle for the first round? Or did he do studio work perchance for HNIC?

    2. I dug thru the Toronto Star archives about a year ago. This was what I found...
Jim Hughson was pretty much the play-by-play, and Gary Green, and Roger Neilson were the color commentators. Jim Van Horne was studio host, and Howie Meeker served as studio analyst roles throughout the 88-89 season, including playoffs.

Then, in the summer of '89, Neilson left TSN, Howie Meeker was brought back, strictly as studio analyst, and Green went to partner with Hughson full time.

Is this correct or is your recall of TSN's 88-89 NHL coverage different?

Your verification on this would be most helpful!

Yes, I believe Cuthbert did studio work in the Edmonton/LA, Calgary/LA, and Calgary/Chicago series. At that time he was the #4 play-by-play man on CBC's depth chart, and they were only covering 3 first-round series. The following year (1990), he did play-
by-play in the first round Calgary/LA series.
