I know you don't want studio analysts, but Don Cherry worked with Hodge the first 3 rounds, then the first 2 games (on Long Island) of the Finals only. Howie Meeker worked with Wells in rounds 2 and 3 and then the 3 games in Edmonton in the Finals.
Meeker also popped into the booth on occasion in rounds 2 and 3 and acted as a secondary colourman, usually for the middle segments of periods (as he had to be downstairs during the intermissions). This was actually common throughout Meeker's HNIC career

    djob,

Great stuff as always. Thanks. HUGE help.

To add to the equation, I know Dick Irvin almost always doubled up as intermission host for Canadiens telecasts during this era. Irvin was almost always on hand as the dressing room interviewer for the cup champions, though John Wells did this chore in '
    84. I had a beta tape (remember those??) of the CBC cup clincher. I remember Gretzky telling Wells how much the champagne stung his eyes as the bubbly was flying all over the dressing room.

However, didn't Brian McFarlane play a studio role in these playoffs? If memory serves, when Irvin assumed the pxp role for CBC Habs games, McFarlane was the studio host for CBC Habs games. McFarlane hosted the 1984 All-Star Game in the Meadowlands
    earlier in 1984.

The Toronto host during the season would always host the Cup Final. Ward Cornell from c.1959-1972, Hodge from 1973-1986 and Ron MacLean since 1987 (though spelled by Scott Russell for the last two games of the 1997 Final). Dan Matheson handled the CTV
games in 1985 and 1986, Hodge and Jim Tatti co-hosted the "ad-hoc" O'Keefe network games in 1987 and 1988.

On the American side in 1984, Al Trautwig was USA's host.

You're right about Irvin often doubling as the studio host in Montreal, but I don't think he often did this during the playoffs. Mostly on regional HNIC games that were only being shown in Quebec, or maybe in a few other select locations. In these
instances, Dave Hodge was usually on the Toronto game, but Toronto didn't make the playoffs in 1984.

As for Brian McFarlane . . . he was the colorman on Toronto games (both HNIC and local TV) until Feb 1980 (or thereabouts) when he made on-air comments that were critical of the way Harold Ballard had been handling the Darryl Sittler saga (within the
last couple of months he had traded away both Lanny McDonald and Tiger Williams). He was afterward banned from the MLG pressbox and HNIC struggled, I think, to find a place to put him for the next few years. I remember him having an intermission
segment called "The NHL Tonight" from CBC studios (or "Hockey Night in Canada Control Centre") where he presented various hockey news stories, showed highlights of other games around the NHL, and featured "The Play of the Week".

In the playoffs, he often hosted games that were played in the US. I know he hosted the games in the 1982 Campbell Conference Final that were played in Chicago, and others as well. He may have had some assignments in the 1984 playoffs, but I'm not
positive. You're right, beginning in 84-85 he was the regular game host for telecasts from Montreal. He did this up until 1989 when he retired, and his position in Montreal was assumed by Scott Russell.

    1985

Not counting 1972 (due to a NABET strike on the CBC) or other rare oddities, this was the first time in which the Stanley Cup playoffs were seen on an outlet other than the CBC. In early February 1985, Carling-O'Keefe breweries won the right to televise
NHL hockey. They signed a four-year contract with CTV to televise regular season games and playoff games, including games in the Stanley Cup Final. CBC and Molson Brewery did get a loophole in that games involving Canadian based teams (excluding the
Quebec Nordiques) in the playoffs would be televised locally by CBC.

As always, please alert with errors or omissions on either side of the border.

Dick Irvin said on the air last year at Patrick Roy's number retirement game that he and Bob Cole were the "lonely twosome" in the booth at Madison Square Garden the night of May 5/86 for Roy's spectacular display of goaltending in which the Habs were
badly outshot yet won in double overtime. Also that it was among the best displays of goaltending that the two men in the booth that night had ever seen by such a young goalie. But I don't know whether it was just the two of them for the other games in
that series or for some reason they didn't have a three-man crew for that game only.

He also stated in his book that he did not work games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup final in Calgary since the CBC claimed it did not have the budget to send him (perhaps due to the fact that it was only being shown locally in Calgary and Montreal),
although he turned up in Calgary anyway to work the Habs radio broadcasts of those games. But he did work game 5 on CBC with Wittman and Davidson, only because he figured that HNIC wanted him on hand for dressing room interview duty in case the Canadiens
won the Stanley Cup, which they did.

    OK, here's my input . . .

In Edmonton-Vancouver, Don Wittman and John Davidson worked all 3 games. Jim Robson did not work any games for CBC that season, as he was unhappy with his reduced workload (he was offered 6 games at the start of the season, so he declined).

In round 2, Bob Cole worked with Davidson on St. Louis-Toronto, while Wittman worked with Gary Dornhoefer on Edmonton-Calgary.

To support what KgnKH1 said, in the Finals, I don't think Dick Irvin worked on CBC's 2 regional telecasts (Games 1 & 2). I saw Game 2 on ESPN Classic and heard only Wittman's and Davidson's voices. I think Irvin called pbp on Montreal radio for games 1
& 2. He did work games 3, 4, 5 on CBC, though. ALSO . . . I saw the conference final game that he was talking about (Game 4 at MSG), also on ESPN Classic, and heard only Cole's and Irvin's voices. I thought it was curious, as usually there was a 3rd
man when those two worked together.

You don't mention it anywhere, but I recall that in the 1986 playoffs, CBC aired several telecasts on the Parliamentary Channel. I think it was done in cases where there was a split network.

some of these telecasts have been shown on NHL network as well; I am not sure of the rinkside reporters, but believe them to be the following (with Dave Hodge as the overall host each night)

Montreal-Boston Brian McFarlane in Montreal, Chris Cuthbert in Boston Calgary-Vancouver Ron MacLean in Calgary; Steve Armitage in Vancouver Toronto-Chicago and Min-St Louis Dave Hodge

    Hartford-Montreal Brian McFarlane
    StLouis-Toronto Dave Hodge
Edmonton-Calgary Chris Cuthbert in Edmonton; Ron MacLean in Calgary

St Louis-Calgary Chris Cuthbert in StLouis; Ron MacLean in Calgary Rangers-Montreal DAve Hodge

finals MacLean games 1-2; McFarlane 3-4; Hodge and MacLean on game 5

agree on all the pbp and analyst assignments; would welcome correction on the reporters and hosts

ESPN used a rinkside reporter at all games; many I am sure of, either having watched the game or from a listing in USA Today; others are *unconfirmed

agree on Matheson as studio host; Bobby Taylor replaced Park as analyst mid-season when Park became coach at Detroit; did Park return for the playoffs? possible, since Wings missed the playoffs and Park was not retained as coach, but I never saw anything
to suggest he returned to CTV immediately after the end of the season

    Notes:
After the 1985-86 season CTV canceled their coverage of NHL hockey, citing low ratings and an inability to clear other programming for both regular season and playoff telecasts. This left Carling O'Keefe with two years left on its four year deal with the
NHL and no place to televise them. The issue became an open sore when the playoffs opened and Carling O'Keefe could not muster a network of some sort, peaking when the Habs-Nordiques series opened with no telecasts originating from Quebec City. Finally,
Carling struck a deal with a CanWest and Global consortium that also had a few CBC and CTV affiliates sprinkled in to carry game 6 of the MTL-QUE game from Le Colisee, the Wales Conference finals and then games 3 and 4 of the SC Final and games 5 and 7
if necessary. The pact also included the 1988 playoffs as well. The network was labeled as the "Stanley Cup 87" network.

Unlike the split CTV/CBC coverage of 1985 and 1986, the CanWest-Global telecasts were network exclusive, except for game 7 of the SC Final. Both CBC and CanWest-Global televised game 7, using separate production facilities and separate on-air talent.

To add to the equation, I know Dick Irvin almost always doubled up as intermission host for Canadiens telecasts during this era. Irvin was almost always on hand as the dressing room interviewer for the cup champions, though John Wells did this chore in
'84. I had a beta tape (remember those??) of the CBC cup clincher. I remember Gretzky telling Wells how much the champagne stung his eyes as the bubbly was flying all over the dressing room. However, didn't Brian McFarlane play a studio role in these
playoffs? If memory serves, when Irvin assumed the pxp role for CBC Habs games, McFarlane was the studio host for CBC Habs games. McFarlane hosted the 1984 All-Star Game in the Meadowlands earlier in 1984.

The Toronto host during the season usually hosts the Cup Final. Ward Cornell from c.1959-1972, Hodge from 1973-1986 (though spelled by Irvin for the last two games of the 1977-1979 Finals in Montreal), and Ron MacLean since 1987 (though spelled by
Scott Russell for the last two games of the 1997 Final). Dan Matheson handled the CTV games in 1985 and 1986, Hodge and Jim Tatti co-hosted the "ad-hoc" O'Keefe network games in 1987 and 1988.

You're right about Irvin often doubling as the studio host in Montreal, including the playoffs. In these instances, Dave Hodge was usually on the Toronto game, but Toronto didn't make the playoffs in 1984.

As for Brian McFarlane . . . he was the color man on Toronto games (both HNIC and local TV) until Feb 1980 (or thereabouts) when he made on-air comments that were critical of the way Harold Ballard had been handling the Darryl Sittler saga (within the
last couple of months he had traded away both Lanny McDonald and Tiger Williams). He was afterward banned from the MLG pressbox and HNIC struggled, I think, to find a place to put him for the next few years. I remember him having an intermission segment
called "The NHL Tonight" from CBC studios (or "Hockey Night in Canada Control Centre") where he presented various hockey news stories, showed highlights of other games around the NHL, and featured "The Play of the Week". In the playoffs, he often hosted
games that were played in the U.S. You're right, beginning in 84-85 he was the regular game host for telecasts from Montreal. He did this up until 1989 when he retired, and his position in Montreal was assumed by Scott Russell.

Not counting 1972 (due to a NABET strike on the CBC) or other rare oddities, this was the first time in which the Stanley Cup playoffs were seen on an outlet other than the CBC. In early February 1985, Carling-O'Keefe breweries won the right to
televise NHL hockey. They signed a four-year contract with CTV to televise regular season games and playoff games, including games in the Stanley Cup Final. CBC and Molson Brewery did get a loophole in that games involving Canadian based teams (excluding
the Quebec Nordiques) in the playoffs would be televised locally by CBC.

As always, please alert with errors or omissions on either side of the border.

    Notes:

I think Irvin called play-by-play on Montreal radio
for games 1 & 2. He did work games 3, 4, 5 on CBC, though. ALSO . . . I saw the conference final game that he was talking about (Game 4 at MSG), also on ESPN Classic, and heard only Cole's and Irvin's voices. I thought it was curious, as usually there
was a 3rd man when those two worked together.

    Hartford-Montreal: Brian McFarlane
    St. Louis-Toronto: Dave Hodge
    Edmonton-Calgary: Chris Cuthbert

    St Louis-Calgary: Chris Cuthbert
    Rangers-Montreal Dave Hodge

    finals: Chris Cuthbert

Agree on all the commentator assignments; would welcome correction on the reporters and hosts. ESPN used a rinkside reporter at all games; many I am sure of, either having watched the game or from a listing in USA Today; others are *unconfirmed

I agree on Matheson as studio host; Bobby Taylor replaced Park as analyst mid-season when Park became coach at Detroit. Park returned for the playoffs since the Wings missed the playoffs and Park was not retained as coach.

    Note:
Despite CTV pulling the plug on their two-year-long venture with the NHL, Carling O'Keefe retained their rights (there were two years remaining on the contract with or without CTV). Things became problematic when the 1987 Stanley Cup playoffs opened
with Carling O'Keefe still without a network of some sort. The problems arguably peaked when the Montreal-Quebec second-round playoff series opened without Molson being allowed to broadcast from Quebec City, leaving Games 3 and 4 off of English-language
television altogether. This led to a hastily-arranged syndicated package on a chain of stations that would one day form the basis of the Global Television Network. The deal between Carling O'Keefe and the Canwest/Global consortium (with a few CBC and CTV
affiliates sprinkled in for good measure) came just in time for Game 6 of this series on April 30.

    Note:
In 1987, coverage also included all five games of the Campbell Conference Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Detroit Red Wings, and Games 3–5 of the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals between the Oilers and Philadelphia Flyers. The network was labeled as the
    "Stanley Cup 87" network.
Unlike the split CTV/CBC coverage of 1984–85 and 1985–86, the Canwest-Global telecasts were network exclusive, except for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals if they were necessary. When CBC and Global televised Game 7 of the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals,
they used separate production facilities and separate on-air talent.

If you want know studio analysts, I have Don Cherry worked with Hodge the first 3 rounds, then the first 2 games (on Long Island) of the Finals only. Howie Meeker worked with Wells in rounds 2 and 3 and then the 3 games in Edmonton in the Finals. Meeker
also popped into the booth on occasion in rounds 2 and 3 and acted as a secondary colourman, usually for the middle segments of periods (as he had to be downstairs during the intermissions). This was actually common throughout Meeker's HNIC career.

Great stuff as always. Thanks. HUGE help.

To add to the equation, I know Dick Irvin almost always doubled up as color commentator and studio host for Canadiens telecasts during this era. Irvin was almost always on hand as the dressing room interviewer for the cup champions, though John Wells did
this chore in '84. I had a beta tape (remember those??) of the CBC cup clincher. I remember Gretzky telling Wells how much the champagne stung his eyes as the bubbly was flying all over the dressing room.

Brian McFarlane played a studio role in these playoffs in the United States. Furthermore, If memory serves, when Irvin assumed the play-by-play role for CBC Habs games, McFarlane was the studio host for CBC Habs games. McFarlane hosted the 1984 All-Star
Game in the Meadowlands earlier in 1984.

The Toronto host during the season would always host the Cup Final. Ward Cornell from c.1959-1972, Hodge from 1973-1986 and Ron MacLean since 1987 (though spelled by Scott Russell for Games 2 & 3 of the 1997 Final). Dan Matheson handled the CTV games in
    1985 and 1986, Hodge and Jim Tatti co-hosted the "ad-hoc" O'Keefe network games in 1987 and 1988.

On the American side in 1984, Al Trautwig was USA's host.

You're right about Irvin often doubling as the studio host in Montreal, mostly on regional HNIC games that were only being shown in Quebec, or maybe in a few other select locations. In these instances, Dave Hodge was usually on the Toronto game, but
Toronto didn't make the playoffs in 1984.

As for Brian McFarlane . . . he was the color commentator and studio host on Toronto games (both HNIC and local TV) until Feb 1980 (or thereabouts) when he made on-air comments that were critical of the way Harold Ballard had been handling the Darryl
Sittler saga (within the last couple of months he had traded away both Lanny McDonald and Tiger Williams). He was afterward banned from the MLG pressbox and HNIC struggled, I think, to find a place to put him for the next few years. I remember him having
an intermission segment called "The NHL Tonight" from CBC studios (or "Hockey Night in Canada Control Centre") where he presented various hockey news stories, showed highlights of other games around the NHL, and featured "The Play of the Week".

In the playoffs, he often hosted games that were played in the United States. I know he hosted the games in the 1982 Campbell Conference Final that were played in Chicago, and others as well. He may have had some assignments in the 1984 playoffs, but I'm
not positive.

Dick Irvin said on the air last year at Patrick Roy's number retirement game that he and Bob Cole were the "lonely twosome" in the booth at Madison Square Garden the night of May 5/86 for Roy's spectacular display of goaltending in which the Habs were
badly outshot yet won in overtime. Also that it was among the best displays of goaltending that the two men in the booth that night had ever seen by such a young goalie. But I don't know whether it was just the two of them for the other games in that
series or for some reason they didn't have a three-man crew for that game only.

I think Irvin called pbp on Montreal radio for games 1 &
    2. He did work games 3, 4, 5 on CBC, though. ALSO . . . I saw the conference final game that he was talking about (Game 4 at MSG), also on ESPN Classic, and heard only Cole's and Irvin's voices. I thought it was curious, as usually there was a 3rd man
    when those two worked together.

You don't mention it anywhere, but I recall that in the 1986 playoffs, CBC aired several telecasts on the Parliamentary Channel. I think it was done in cases where there was a split network.

Some of these telecasts have been shown on NHL Network as well; I am not sure of the host/rinkside reporters, but believe them to be the following (with Dave Hodge as the overall host each night)

Montreal-Boston: Brian McFarlane in Montreal; Chris Cuthbert in Boston Edmonton-Vancouver: Chris Cuthbert in Edmonton; Steve Armitage in Vancouver Toronto-Chicago & Minnesota-St. Louis: Dave Hodge and Don Cherry

    Hartford-Montreal: Brian McFarlane
St. Louis-Toronto: Dave Hodge and Don Cherry
    Edmonton-Calgary: Chris Cuthbert

Montreal-New York Rangers: Dave Hodge and Don Cherry
    St. Louis-Calgary: Chris Cuthbert

Finals: Dave Hodge and Don Cherry

agree on all the play-by-play and color commentator assignments; would welcome correction on the reporters and hosts

Yes, since Wings missed the playoffs and Park was not retained as coach.

Unlike the split CTV/CBC coverage of 1984–85 and 1985–86, the Canwest/Global telecasts were network exclusive, except for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals if it was necessary. When CBC and Global televised Game 7 of the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals, they
used separate production facilities and separate on-air talent.
