If you were desperate, you'd have looked for work rather than spent your dwindling time trying to sell John Henry t-shirts and mugs.

lived on my own, been the one in control of the rent and decisionmaking,
I've let someone in need crash at my place at some point. *Every.
Time.* I've never had my own place and *not* let someone crash there at
least once for at least a few days. Never asked for anything, never

on. That realization makes me feel good about myself. Even at my worst
I was never a greedy, selfish jerk who ignored other people's needs. I
may be broken and have done a lot of things I'm ashamed of and regret in
the past, but leaving someone on the streets when I could put them
inside is something I have never, ever done."

It must have been mighty crowded in that last room John got tossed from
for nonpayment of rent. So I guess John is saying he was in control of
the rent to the point of not paying it and not allowing anyone to stay
that could.

Of course, John could be lying. Again.
