• Ping: P-Dub. Question About Labor Strikes

From Jebediah Grainger@21:1/5 to All on Fri Sep 15 10:31:47 2023
Sir, I am genuinely interested to hear what you think of the current crop of labor strikes.

I mean, you always talk about how Joe Biden and Democrats don't "do anything that benefits workers"

    OK.

But it appears that many workers feel the CEO's don't benefit them either. Decades of "Trickle Down Economics" hasn't really worked for them so they're going to just withold labor until the bosses come around.

    Approve? Disapprove?

In general I support workers of course. But unions take advantage of their power, and make demands that companies cannot afford. And the more companies comply, the higher inflation will go.

Case in point - Yellow freight. Out of business because of the union. Teamsters. Biden and the dems are so proud of unions. I wonder how these 30000 union members feel now - as they are unemployed.

My company is a non-union trucking company. We are thriving.

Actually the unions made concessions and it did no good, the
mismanagment continued. People don't stop using a carrier because it's a
    union shop.

Case in point - Yellow freight. Out of business because of the union. Teamsters. Biden and the dems are so proud of unions. I wonder how
these 30000 union members feel now - as they are unemployed.

Bad choice. Despite getting a free 700m loan from the Gubmint, they
still pissed away the company. One has to ask how the debt piled up.

My company is a non-union trucking company. We are thriving.

I'm sure they also have better management. Union truckers are still
    thriving elsewhere.

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2023/08/07/yellow-freight-going-ou t-of-business-bankruptcy/70541667007/

Looks like mismanagement at best, theft at worst.

"Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien has long accused Yellow of mismanagement. Last month, O'Brien said the company "has historically
proven that it could not manage itself despite billions of dollars in
worker concessions and hundreds of millions in bailout funding from the
    federal government."

"In a statement Monday, the Teamsters, which said it agreed in 2011 to a
pay cut for employees to keep the company in business, denounced "any
attempt by the company to evade its financial obligations through legal maneuvers."

"Teamster families sacrificed billions of dollars in wages, benefits,
and retirement security to rescue Yellow ... But Yellow’s dysfunctional,
greedy C-suite failed to take responsibility for squandering all that
cash. They still don’t,” O’Brien said in a statement. “They shamelessly
pin their corporate incompetence on working people."

    Not enough?

    https://apnews.com/article/yellow-bankruptcy-trucking-pandemic-loan-08850 f5cff63cf22979d7e28bd427532

"The Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which was filed Sunday, comes just three
years after Yellow received $700 million in pandemic-era loans from the
federal government. While a Chapter 11 filing is used to restructure
debt while operations continue, Yellow, like other trucking companies in
recent years, will liquidate and the U.S. will join other creditors
unlikely to recover funds extended to the company.

Yellow fell into severe financial stress after a long stretch of poor management and strategic decisions dating back decades."

    But wait! There's more!

    https://nypost.com/2023/09/15/yellow-paid-execs-4-6m-after-bankruptcy-lef t-30k-jobless/

"Yellow Corp. coughed up $4.6 million in bonuses to its top executives
for failing to skirt around a sudden Chapter 11 filing, a person
familiar with the bankruptcy — which left the trucking giant’s 30,000
employees out of work — told Fortune show.

The multimillion-dollar payout wouldn’t have been so lofty had Yellow
made more detailed plans leading up to its liquidation, the source said, according to the outlet."

Just for the hell of it, let's cite another source:

    https://abc7ny.com/yellow-corp-trucking-bankruptcy-freight/13612690/

"But with deregulation of trucking in 1984, the Big Three and other
unionized LTL carriers faced greater competition from nonunion carriers. Consolidated went out of business in 2002.

While the nonunion LTL carriers started with a significant cost
advantage, repeated concessions by the Teamsters union helped close much
of that gap. So did a shortage of drivers nationally, which helped lift
    wages at the nonunion carriers.

But Yellow faced other problems. It started taking on debt to buy many
of its unionized rivals, including Roadway for nearly $1 billion in
    2004.

The company had about $1.5 billion in long-term debt on its balance
sheet in its most recent financial report. Nearly half that debt came
from a pandemic relief loan it received from the federal government in
2020, with the US Treasury taking a 30% stake in the company in return.
Those shares have lost nearly all their value since then."

Who pushed for deregulation? The corporations and Republicans.

Be careful who you blame. Given how booming the logistics business has
become, it's not like they couldn't find work. Corporate greed, lobbying
and corrupt governement did this. Who handed them a 700m bailout that
    they squandered? The same Republicans.

I'll let you take a guess why there won't be an investigation on where
    the money went.

    Read it again:

"While the nonunion LTL carriers started with a significant cost
advantage, repeated concessions by the Teamsters union helped close much
of that gap. So did a shortage of drivers nationally, which helped lift
    wages at the nonunion carriers."

PS: Don't forget to thank the Teamsters for part of your wages.
