4 Times England Shamelessly Flouted ‘Sporting Spirit’ Of Cricket To Win & Felt Good About It

Indian women’s team’s all-rounder Deepti Sharma rattled England with her one dismissal as he ran out Charlotte Dean at the non-striker’s end to
help the visitors win the third ODI.

Dean was trying to take unfair advantage by leaving the crease even before
the bowler had released the ball but Deepti’s presence of mind ended her innings that gave England a glimmer of hope of securing a win and avoiding
a series whitewash.

While what Deepti did was well within the rules of the game, England
cricketers (former and present) as well as their fans started whining
about the mode of dismissal and said that it was not done in the right
spirit.

However, Indian cricketers like Virender Sehwag, Ravichandran Ashwin and
Amit Mishra gave it back to the Brits on social media by calling them sore losers and backing Deepti Sharma.

1. Ran Out Grant Elliot Despite His Collision With Ryan Sidebottom

In an ODI in 2008 between England and New Zealand, batter Grant Elliot
collided with English pacer Ryan Sidebottom while looking for a quick
single and fell flat on the ground.

Ian Bell grabbed the ball and threw it at the non-striker’s end where
Kevin Pietersen dislodged the bails and England appealed for a run-out.

The on-field umpires asked England skipper Paul Collingwood if he wanted
to withdraw his appeal, but he refused to change his mind and Elliot was
given out.

2. Amy Jones Claimed A Catch After Picking The Ball From The Ground

England women’s team’s wicket-keeper Amy Jones, during a T20I against India, claimed a catch despite picking the ball up from the ground after
Smriti Mandhana edged a delivery straight back to her.

Mandhana was walking back to the pavilion and only when she saw the replay
on the big screen that the keeper had bottled the catch, she came back and
the umpires overturned the decision.

3. Stuart Broad Stood His Ground Even After A Clear Edge To 1st Slip

England pacer Stuart Broad seemed to be the most rattled from the lot of English players who vented their frustration on social media after Deepti Sharma ran out Charlotte Dean.

However, a video of Broad from an old Test has been doing the rounds on
social media in which he was seen standing his ground despite getting a
clear edge that landed in the hands of Michael Clarke in the first slip.

On-field umpire Aleem Dar refused to raise his finger but replays confirm
that Broad got a big edge which was taken cleanly by Clarke.

4. Using Mints To Tamper The Ball

The 2005 Ashes series is one of the most exciting five-match Test series
that has ever been played between two top cricketing nations.

However, in that famous series, England star Marcus Trescothick admitted
that he was the ‘designated’ ball tamperer for the hosts.

In his autobiography, the former England opener admitted that he used mint
on the ball which enabled his side to keep the shine of the ball for a
longer period of time and allowed the ball to swing more.
