During this time, college basketball was essentially a regional sport with very few games which were available nationally.

The TVS Network (founded by Eddie Einhorn) syndicated a number of games, mostly on a regional basis. Einhorn put together a Saturday afternoon TVS game of the week concept often featuring some of the major midwestern independent teams (Marquette, DePaul,
Notre Dame) and these games were widely syndicated (at least in the east and midwest). Starting with the 1970-71 season, I will include these games (at least to the extent that I have been able to determine). Dick Enberg and Rod Hundley broadcast many of
these major TVS games. Sometimes Enberg and Hundley would call a Pac 8 game on a Fri night, fly to the midwest for the TVS game of the week on Sat aft, and then head back to the west coast to call a Pac 8 game on Sat night. TVS syndicated a few games
nationally each year, often involving UCLA which was in the middle of its run of 10 national championships in a 12-year span.

The Hughes network syndicated a few Pac 8 games nationally while CD Chesley syndicated some ACC games nationally.

    1967-68 season

Sat 1/20/68, UCLA @ Houston, TVS, 9 pm, Dick Enberg, Bob Pettit

    - This game (played at the Astrodome) was the first ever prime time national telecast of a college basketball regular season game.
    - The book How March Became Madness comes with a DVD titled The Game That Changed College Basketball which contains the end of the first half and the entire second half of this historic telecast.

    1968-69 season

Sat 1/18/69, Houston @ UCLA, TVS, 11:30 pm, Dick Enberg, Rod Hundley

    1973-74 season

    * Sat 12/1/73, Maryland @ UCLA, TVS, 11:30 pm

    * Sat 3/9/74, UCLA @ USC, TVS, 11:30 pm

    - The 12/15 game appears to be the first ever major network telecast of a regular season game. ABC (which had recently lost the NBA rights to CBS) televised this game using their former NBA announcer crew.

    - Once again, Chesley syndicated an ACC game nationally on Super Bowl Sunday (1/13).

    - The NCAA tournament started the afternoon of 3/9 with a doubleheader on NBC. The ACC and Pac 8 had first round byes, and these leagues were still staging conference tournament and regular season action after the NCAA tournament started.

    - The ACC title game was often syndicated outside of the ACC region in these years (and I remember watching this telecast in NY). This was one of the greatest games in college basketball history. 1974 was the last year that only one team from a
conference could go to the NCAA tournament (and this OT classic featuring the #1 and #4 ranked teams played a huge role in the expansion of the NCAA tournament). Maryland turned down an NIT bid the next day.

    1974-75 season

    * Sat 12/21/74, Notre Dame @ UCLA, TVS, 11:30 pm
Sat 12/28/74, UCLA @ Maryland, TVS-Chesley, 9 pm, Dick Enberg, Billy Packer, Jim Thacker
Sat 1/4/75, Notre Dame @ Maryland, TVS-Chesley, 1 pm, Dick Enberg, Billy Packer, Jim Thacker
    * Sat 1/18/75, North Carolina @ NC State, *Chesley, 1 pm
Sat 1/25/75, UCLA @ Notre Dame, TVS, 1 pm, Dick Enberg, Rod Hundley
Sat 2/1/75, Maryland @ NC State, *Chesley, 1 pm, Jim Thacker, Billy Packer
    * Sat 2/8/75, South Carolina @ Notre Dame, TVS, 1 pm
    * Sat 2/15/75, LaSalle @ Notre Dame, TVS, 3 pm
    * Sat 2/22/75, Marquette @ South Carolina, TVS, 1 pm
    * Sat 3/1/75, Ohio State @ Indiana, TVS, 1 pm

    - The 12/28 game was the first time that Enberg and Packer ever worked together. Some background info on that...

Enberg's book Oh My! says that the first time these two worked together was on a UCLA-Maryland game in 1974.

Packer's book Hoops says that the first time these two worked together was on a UCLA @ Maryland game on Super Bowl Sunday 1975. Packer is clearly incorrect on the date because these teams did not play on 1/12/75 (or any other SB Sunday for that matter)
and there was no national college BB telecast on this date either. Packer spends a few pages on this telecast which he says was a joint production between TVS and Chesley and talks about meeting Enberg for the first time earlier that day. He also says
that Enberg called pxp for one half and Jim Thacker did pxp for the other half and that Packer was the analyst throughout.

Interestingly, in their respective books, both Enberg and Packer state that the UCLA-Md game was the only time they worked together before NBC paired them for the 1975-76 season. However, the Enberg/Packer/Thacker trio also worked the 1/4 ND-Md game one
    week later.

    - The other ACC home games on this list might have been joint TVS-Chesley productions.

    1975-76 season

Sat 11/29/75, Indiana vs UCLA (at St Louis), NBC, 11:30 pm, Dick Enberg, Billy Packer

Sun 3/7/76, South Carolina @ Marquette, NBC, 1:30 pm, Dick Enberg, Billy Packer

    - For this season, NBC joined forces with TVS on a weekly package. On Saturdays, NBC televised a doubleheader consisting of one timeslot with many regional games and one timeslot with a national game (although some NBC affiliates didn't carry these "
national" games). This listing only covers the national games. NBC also carried Sunday games on 1/25 and 3/7.

    - NBC used Enberg and Packer on the national games. I assume this duo also called the 2/21 and 2/28 games.

    - Yes, the 11/29 game was a live telecast (a 10:30 pm local start in St Louis).

    1976-77 season

Sun 1/2/77, Michigan @ South Carolina, NBC, 1:30 pm, Dick Stockton, Billy Packer

Sat 3/5/77, San Francisco @ Notre Dame, NBC, 12:30 pm, Dick Enberg, Billy Packer
Sun 3/6/77, Marquette @ Michigan, NBC, 1:30 pm, Dick Enberg, Billy Packer

    - For this season, NBC moved the national games to Sundays, starting with a doubleheader on 1/2. NBC provided split-national coverage of two games each on 2/6 and 2/20.

    - NBC added a Saturday game on the last weekend of the season to show undefeated San Francisco. That weekend, Packer called 3 ACC tournament games in Greensboro on Thu 3/3, both ACC semis the next night, then went to South Bend to call SF-ND on Sat aft,
went back to Greensboro to call the ACC title game that same night, and then went to Ann Arbor to call Marq-Mich the next day.

    - I assume Enberg and Packer called the 2/27 game.

Sun 3/5/78, Michigan @ UCLA, NBC, 4 pm, Dick Enberg, Billy Packer, Al McGuire

    - For this season, NBC added Al McGuire to the #1 team. Early in the season, NBC stationed McGuire in a remote location and went to him only for periodic commentary. Eventually, NBC moved McGuire courtside to form a three-man announcer team.

    - Dick Stockton filled in for Enberg on at least three games. (Enberg called the AFC title game in Denver on 1/1 and had a boxing assignment on 2/5.)

    - ABC televised the ACC tournament final as part of Wide World of Sports. This was the first time Duke was ever on national TV.

    - CD Chesley (who controlled the ACC rights) wanted NBC to televise some ACC conference games as part of its national package as it had the previous few years. However, NBC wanted to feature intersectional games. This ticked off Chesley who sold the
rights to the ACC tournament final to ABC and also explains the absence of ACC home games on the above NBC schedule.

    1978-79 season

Sat 12/30/78, Kentucky vs Notre Dame (at Louisville), NBC, 11:30 pm (tape delay), Jim Simpson, Billy Packer, Al McGuire

Sun 3/4/79, Michigan vs Notre Dame (at Pontiac), NBC, 1 pm, Dick Enberg, Billy Packer, Al McGuire

    - Enberg called an NFL playoff game on 12/30, so Simpson filled in on the hoop game (which was aired on tape delay).
    - Enberg performed Super Bowl host duty on 1/21, so Simpson filled in on the 1/20 game.
    - NBC added a game on 2/25 to show undefeated Indiana State. This was the first time many fans had ever seen Larry Bird play.

    1979-80 season

Sat 11/17/79, Duke vs Kentucky (at Springfield), TVS, 1 pm, Jay Randolph, Billy Packer
Wed 12/5/79, Wisconsin @ DePaul, ESPN, 9 pm, Joe Boyle, Dick Vitale

Sun 2/24/80, Kentucky @ LSU, NBC, 2:30 pm (regional), Don Criqui, Billy Packer Sun 3/2/80, Ohio State @ Indiana, NBC, 1 pm, Dick Enberg, Billy Packer, Al McGuire

    - I chose to include the 12/5 game because this was the first ever ESPN college basketball telecast.
    - According to the timmy b files, Enberg did not have an NFL assignment the weekend of 12/15 while Criqui did, so Enberg likely called the hoop game that day (and I assume Packer and McGuire did also).
    - Both Enberg and Criqui called NFL playoff games the weekend of 12/29, so Jones filled in on the hoop game (aired on tape delay).
    - The 2/17 game was a Sun morning local start.

    1980-81 season

Sat 11/22/80, DePaul vs Louisville (at Springfield), TVS, 1 pm, Jay Randolph, Billy Packer
Sat 12/13/80, Maryland @ Louisville, NBC, 1:30 pm, Dick Enberg, Billy Packer, Al McGuire

    - For two Dec games, Bob Costas filled in for Enberg (who was on NFL duty).
    - Charlie Jones filled in for Enberg on 1/24 and it might have been Criqui on the 1/25 game. (Enberg called the SB on 1/25.)

summary of NBC games called by the Enberg/Packer/McGuire trio:

    1977-78 - 7 plus 3 NCAA tournament games
    1978-79 - 6 plus 3 NCAA tournament games
    1979-80 - 7 plus 5 NCAA tournament games
    1980-81 - 8 plus 9 NCAA tournament games

total 28 regular season and 20 NCAA tournament games over 4 seasons

I was surprised at how (relatively) few games this trio actually called. Enberg missed numerous games over this span.

summary of NBC games called by another pxp announcer with Packer and McGuire as co-analysts:

    1977-78 - 3
    1978-79 - 3
    1979-80 - 4
    1980-81 - 6

total 16 regular season games over 4 seasons

Here is a summary of the other pxp announcers who worked with Packer/McGuire and the number of games each called (assuming
    Criqui did the 1/25/81 game)

    Dick Stockton (3)
    Jim Simpson (3)
    Don Criqui (4)
    Charlie Jones (2)
    Merle Harmon (1)
    Bob Costas (3)

The 1/2/71 was the first college game I watched outside of local tv covering Purdue and Indiana in the Chicago area. The great 1974 ACC title game was not shown in Chicago. Also the second game of the 1972 Final Four was not telecast. The same year all 8
games in both the Illinois Class A and AA were televised. I had a friend go to Wake Forest, and never saw him play on tv.
