• Not a bad Saturday on the course...

From Alan@21:1/5 to All on Mon Aug 28 14:47:07 2023
I spent the weekend at my brother and sister-in-law's place in Courtenay
for a full weekend of guy stuff.

Formula 1, the Tour Championship... ...checking out the Canadian Women's
Open at Shaugnessy (always fun to watch a tournament on a course you've played)...

    ...and 9 holes of golf.

I've been trying to balance life a little better, so I've been out at
the driving range fairly regularly for a few weeks; hitting it pretty
easy, because I've a small hole in my abdominal wall, but hitting it
pretty well. I saw a clip with one of the Good Good Golf guys (Luke
Kwon) getting a lesson from Jordan Spieth's coach, Cameron McCormick,
and it really struck a chord about my own swing.

But I hadn't actually tried it on grass.

So my expectations were reasonably low, and my brother and I took a
power cart in deference to my problems with walking and standing for
long periods, despite this just being a flat executive course (par 30,
    1,763 yards)

And I was very pleased to find that what I was working on...was working!

We were playing a game my brother and I think we invented when we played
on his wedding day 20 years ago. The game has a very impolite name (at
least our version of it): "Fuck you!" It works by giving each player in
the group the ability to ask for one stroke to be replayed (two strokes
    if you're playing 18).

So on the third hole, 182 yard par 3, I hit a pretty good 4-iron
(remember: I'm swing easy!) to 8 feet...

...only to hear my brother pipe up and say, "That was a really good
looking shot; so good, I'd like to see it again"...

...and even though it ended up about 5 feet further away, the repeat
stroke was even better than the first (on a purely technical level).

I went into the final hole up by a stroke after a birdie on 8 and
proceeded to hit the only driver of the day into a hazard. So when Chris
hit his drive onto the downslope of a mound to the right of the fairway,
and then hit a fantastic, punch hybrid to the front edge of the green,
    he knew what was coming:

"That was really good, Cuz [I call him "Cuz"...long story]...

...but it was so good I'd love to see it again."

And damn if he didn't hit it basically just as well the second time.

After my drop, I was able to punch out from under a willow tree to the
fringe myself, and then left a tester for my bogey after chipping on.

Chris parred from 4 feet, and then I dropped mine in for bogey from
    about 5 feet..

Overall, we tied at 36 (6 over) with him having to replay two strokes,
    and me only one.

I heartily recommend watching this video and the others with various
members of the Good Good golfers. Maybe it only works for me, but I like McCormack's way of teaching.

That's awesome playing, Alan. You really don't have to swing out of your shoes to play a good round.

BTW, I played my first round of golf in 10 or 11 years a month or so ago. It was a family thing and I felt like I couldn't say no. I was not expecting much, which was handy because I was comically bad. I stopped keeping track after the 3rd triple, but I
must have been around 60 for 9 holes. It was still fun though, especially the mandatory rehydration period after the round.

I'm going to have to play again before too long. I might even hit a bucket or two beforehand. Or not. We'll see.

Absolutely true, and very convenient for me at the moment.

    :-)

Ah, yes! The rehydration interval! Very important of course.

    :-D

I just got tired of playing badly. I've been as low as a 9.4 index, and
it wasn't that long ago. So I figured some regular practice time was in
order. I bought the $300 gets you $400 credit for range balls at my
local, and I intend to hit at least a bucket every week until I'm back
    in the groove.
