Ruud was trying to tank but nothing happened. How dispirited can you get?

Was [Ruud] just never really all that good?

I haven't watched him lately, but he was in at
least two Grand Slam finals. In Roland Garros
he lost to Nadal and the final set was devastating
    6-0.

Alcaraz beat him in the US Open final. The stakes
in that match were high as the winner would also
reach #1 ATP Ranking. Ruud lost but got to #2.

He was good, but apparently his level of play
    has declined.

he put a lot of work in to get to those finals and well deserved it, but he just hasn't got the power vs the bigger guys and 2nd he hates grass. He had the best attitude out of all the younger players, but obviously got annoyed/upset about what happened
in those finals. He should've gone away and kept at the same level or tried to improve, he may well get lucky and win a slam like Sinner. Ruud would've least been in all semi-finals if he'd done that.

    Out of 3 slam finals...

His real shot was USO 2022.

It was his second final (following FO 2022), he wasn't that young and Alcaraz was inexperienced.

He would have been #1 as well.

FO 2022 vs Nadal and FO 2023 vs Djokovic are not missed chances of the same magnitude imo.

Overall, by some stats, Ruud is second greatest player in open era without a grand slam title. First is Roche but, Roche won a slam in amateurs so maybe Ruud is the most unfortunate in history?

Playing all of his slam finals vs top greats (Nadal, Djokovic and if Alcaraz is to become one)

I'll post my stats but first to get yourself acquainted with the system.

    Novak Đoković 24364858
    Rafael Nadal 22303847
    Roger Federer 20314658
    Pete Sampras 14182329

    Numbers are: AABBCCDD

    AA - titles
    BB - finals reached
    CC - semis reached
    DD - quarters reached

(This system is based on the fact that it's impossible for anyone to reach more than 99 QFs. If that happens, it will have to be readjusted to AAABBBCCCDDD).

So now that you know how it works. Slam stats, guys with multiple slam finals without a title of course. Open era.

    Tony Roche 30812
    Casper Ruud 30303
    Todd Martin 20610
    Stefanos Tsitsipas 20607
    Cédric Pioline 20408
    Miloslav Mečíř 20407
    Àlex Corretja 20306
    Kevin Curren 20304
    Robin Söderling 20206
    Mark Philippoussis 20205
    Kevin Anderson 20203
    Steve Denton 20202

Bizarre Ruud stat is, whenever he made it to the QF, he went on to make the finals.

As you can see from numbers.

I'll post the rest of this fun stat.

Just to inform you, first one is Ion Tirac (he is chronologically the first with a single QF) and the last one (newest) is Roman Saffiulin.

So the king of the losers are.

Most QF, SF or F but never beyond:

    Henman, 6 SF
Roche (or Ruud), 3 timed runner-up
