    Vamos!

She played really well throughout the tournament, beating some solid
    players...

    Final: Siniakova: 3-6, 6-4, 6-4
    Blinkova; 6-2, 7-5
    Fruhvirtova 7-6, 6-2
    Mirra Andreeva: 3-6, 6-1, 6-3
    Azarenka: 2-6, 6-3 /wo

Azarenka got injured. Imo Lealah played other matches better than the
final... but the final was hardest mainly due to Siniakova's
gamesmanship. Sini got first "injured" on 2nd set when she was 0-4 down,
there was very long medical timeout her getting massage & left thigh
wrapped. Treatment seemed to have helped as she immediately broke Leylah
back twice... but Leylah fought hard and served out finally the 2nd set.

Early on 3rd set Siniakova injured herself again, she could hardly walk
to side of the court to receive her treatment. This time they bandaged
the thigh on right leg. Remarkably she was able to immediately run like
a moose with now both her legs injured & bandaged. She also took her
time while serving throughout the match and got a time violation warning
end of 3rd set. Also broke one racket and tossed another. Argued with
    umpire.

So yes, was very tough final and took like 3 hours with medical
timeouts. Siniakova clearly did everything in her power - and then some
    - to break Leylah's momentum & rhythm. If she indeed was faking those
injuries this must be one of the most unsportsmanlike behaviour I've
    ever seen on tennis court.

Anyway, very happy the way Leylah played, served and battled during her
HK campaign. Promises good things for next year.

Leylah improved her ranking 17 spots to #43. Nice!

Yes, this is impressive and promising. Maybe you were indeed right, that
she is recovering and peaking at a higher level.

Let's hope so, she plays attractive type of women's tennis.

I was extra careful not to even mention her name here during the
tournament... as each time I write about her she loses the next match.
    Could be a coincidence but...

She may play next week in China at Jianxi Open... at least her first
match should be rather easy facing some Chinese player ranked 435 at
    singles...

Leylah improved her ranking 17 spots to #43. Nice!

According to Court 1, none of the top players care about these Asian tournaments anyway, and it's a lowly "250" besides. ;)

I didn't say none of the top players. I said the very top tier 1 players. Leylah isn't one of those! It's really scraping the bottom of the barrel to watch WTA Hong Kong IMO. Yes, I know Leylah is Canadian but I still don't care. Call me when she makes
the final of a slam again when all top tier players are playing.

But it seems to me Leylah fought through some tough matches and did a good job of snagging the title. We'll see if that translates into a resurgence next year.

Who else was in the draw though? Big names like Blinkova, Fruhvirtova? I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than watch that. The fact that Leylah won the title with those type of players means zilch regarding how she will do in a bigger tournament with
top tier players. Yes, I'm a snob. Sue me. 😉

It's encouraging to see her win any title. Yes, it means little if anything in terms of going deep in slams. That's why I said "we'll see." If she loses early at the AO to a relative nobody, then it's back to square one.

Players take what they get when it comes to rebuilding confidence. Remember when it thrilled Chris Evert to squeak past Laura Golarsa at Wimbledon? That's when I knew she was through for good.

According to Court 1, none of the top players care about these Asian tournaments anyway, and it's a lowly "250" besides. ;)

Yep. Asian swing doesn't count cause it's a tuneup. Oh wait...

Somehow this exchange of yours vanished into ether from me, only saw
    this last message.

I didn't say none of the top players. I said the very top tier 1 players. Leylah isn't one of those! It's really scraping the bottom of the barrel to watch WTA Hong Kong IMO. Yes, I know Leylah is Canadian but I still don't care. Call me when she
makes the final of a slam again when all top tier players are playing.

What qualifies as "top tier 1 player"?

    Top 10? Top 4?
Gracs and I are only allowed to watch matches with Sabalenka?

But it seems to me Leylah fought through some tough matches and did a good job of snagging the title. We'll see if that translates into a resurgence next year.

Very least she should rise up the rankings next year considering she
didn't even have a serve during half of this season.

Sue me. 😉

It's not only about the title but the way she's been playing and
especially serving. I admit she still has room to improve but this looks already promising. She's just turned 21 ffs.

It's encouraging to see her win any title. Yes, it means little if anything in terms of going deep in slams. That's why I said "we'll see." If she loses early at the AO to a relative nobody, then it's back to square one.

Nah, it's women's tennis... you can lose on 1st round and win the next
    slam. :)

AO is probably not her best slam anyway. I think that Wimbledon might
    suit her game the best.

Players take what they get when it comes to rebuilding confidence. Remember when it thrilled Chris Evert to squeak past Laura Golarsa at Wimbledon? That's when I knew she was through for good.

    Hahaha

I had the same feeling when Leylah beat today Guo. And tomorrow she'll
    play You!
