• Keys routs Pegula? Wow!

From Gracchus@21:1/5 to All on Mon Sep 4 12:12:50 2023
Yes, I almost thought I saw the score wrong. Madison Keys (AKA "Bucky Beefalo" AKA "Whisp's Miss Universe") beat Pegula by a blowout.

As some of our more vapid ESPN commentators would say, "I didn't see that coming. Did YOU see that coming? Well I didn't see it coming." She must have been zoning like Ostapenko was last night.

    Yes. That's remarkable.

She's a strangely compelling bittersweet story. When she played Sloan
Stevens for one of the majors a while back, my guess was that she'd
probably dominate her. Then she choked, big time.

Right then you could see what her problem was, and probably always would be.

She has a ton of game, without doubt.

Yeah, I actually wouldn't mind her winning the whole thing. It would be like when Novotna finally won Wimbledon a few years after her nightmare choke. But it's very unlikely. Not only is she terribly inconsistent, there's still Gauff, Ostapenko, and the
loathsome Sabalenka. All have a better shot.

We know she has the game, like eg Sakkari has, to win a slam or 2. But
they under perform so often we don't see the slam win coming until one
day they put it all together. Over the course of a career slam wins
from Keys and Sakkari should surprise no one, but you can never tell
    when it may come.

Ostapenko has won a slam so can do it, also made semis at Wimbledon same
year. Having said that over a 5 year period at FO, including her title,
she won only 7 matches - lost 1st rd the 2 yrs before her win and the
    2 yrs after her win : )

What I'm curious about is Zheng beating Jabeur. I didn't see the match.
Did she take it from Jabeur, did Jabeur give it to her, or what?

In the early mid rounds, before there is pressure and expectancy, Jabeur
is a nightmare. So the loss really surprised me.

    Yes, she does.

It's like the old barbed compliment "She has a really pretty *face*." The speaker would simply say "she's pretty" unless there's a body issue. Here, it's the inverse.

Tied onto a face like hers, it's just gotta be sad for her, without
doubt. She is like a good-hearted ugly little kid.

Yeah, true. But it's only sad if she's bothered by it. Reminds me of when the Australian newspapers were talking about Lindsey Davenport's bulky, ungainly physique. She said, "If that's the worst they can throw at me, I can take it." Some people come to
terms in life--early or later--with unchangeable physical attributes they were dealt by the genetic lottery, or sometimes, fate.

coming." She must have been zoning like Ostapenko was last night.
    Yes. That's remarkable.

She's a strangely compelling bittersweet story. When she played Sloan >>>>> Stevens for one of the majors a while back, my guess was that she'd
probably dominate her. Then she choked, big time.

Right then you could see what her problem was, and probably always
    would be.

She has a ton of game, without doubt.
Yeah, I actually wouldn't mind her winning the whole thing. It would

yeah no probs with Keys who is fun to watch or Ostapingo winning it! :D

    Would be awesome either one.

Jabeur is having some serious mental health issues imo. She was lucky
to make 4th rd the way she was playing. Losing Wimbledon final 2 yrs in
a row when she was fave both times, adding a USO final loss on top, I
    think it's broken her and she's finished. It's a shame because I
figured a few yrs ago she'd probably win Wimbledon with the way her game
worked on grass. Yes making the final twice is pretty good, but when
you're fave to win it has to be a bit demoralizing.

I wouldn't go that far lol. Iga is a beauty queen next to Henin, who
    looks like a small boy : )

    Both dogs IMO.

Funny how you think of yourself as an advocate for women, yet constantly use a term men used for ages to dehumanize women they rated unattractive. There's some kind of disconnect going on there.

Not so. I say it freely about ATP players too. It has nothing to do with gender in my case.

Remember months ago I said Sinner looks like the guy the movie Mask was based on? I could continue on and critique the looks of all the ATP players if you want. Not many would be GQ models, let's put it that way(similar to the WTA.)

The only reason you are sensitive re my comment about Henin/Swinetek is due to the fact that for some reason, you've taken a shine to Swinetek. I have no clue why as I find nothing attractive or appealing about he(game, looks, personality) but suit
    yourself.

That's not true. I've never said I think Swiatek is any kind of a beauty. I do like how she's maximized her abilities and gotten to the top in spite of no big weapon. She doesn't play a pretty game, but I prefer it to one-dimensional bashers like
Ostapenko and Sabalenka. As far as personality, I've agreed with you about her awkwardness. The difference between us on that issue is you want to see her lose because of it.

Thank goodness for that! At least I know you're not totally out to lunch on the topic.

I do like how she's maximized her abilities and gotten to the top in spite of no big weapon.

Seriously, I haven't watched her for a long time? Does she not have big weapons? How has she won so much then? I thought she was an aggressive player? She's not like a Halep type player is she(i.e. strong defense skills?) I really know little about her.

She doesn't play a pretty game, but I prefer it to one-dimensional bashers like Ostapenko and Sabalenka.

I think Ostapenko is more interesting than Sabalenka but I don't watch much of any of those players.

I don't necessarily want to see her lose, I'm just not interested in her at all(win or lose.) I guess it depends on whom she's playing.

It doesn't cut the same way when applied to a man. Sometimes it can be semi-complimentary--"hound," "sly dog," and so on. With a woman, it really connotes an unsightly animal unless in the form of "hot bitch" or something like that.

She takes the ball very early and puts opponents under immediate pressure when returning. She redirects and defends well, and is very quick. Her serve isn't especially big and she's vulnerable on the second serve, as players like Garcia and Pegula have
exposed. The forehand is a weapon, but not an outstanding one IMO. Backhand is consistent but not huge. That's my assessment, anyway.

Yes, does everything pretty well and a good thinker and fighter. But
she always looks beatable to me even though she's been winning a lot. I
think the winning at that high level will be drying up soon as more
players are used to her game and realize there isn't too much to fear.

Oh, sorry. Lassie came later than the 30s I think. How about the hounds in The Hounds of the Baskervilles? They had classic good looks. Is that what you mean when you say Swiatek looks like a classical 30s movie star? It must be.
