    Very nice clip.

Gonzalez's BH is terrible. No defensive skills, no passes, no return,
only a punched sliceish sort of thing. He had Hoad on the ropes in one
game, but the BH failed him where a TS drive would have been a sure
thing. But if you can't hit one, that's it. It's amazing how much tennis strokes have changed.

Considering all their shortcomings, these guys are very good
players/athletes. Surprisingly good. A good crowd too. A Dimitrov with a
woodie would would trounce these guys, though.

Great find, Whisp! Thanks for linking this.

First, what in the hell do you think about the surface? Shiny! I had
played in a little tournament back in the 70s at the college courts and
they were due to be resurfaced the next year. They were incredibly fast. Everything stayed low and ran back at you real fast. It *looked* like that.

No benches, huh? No wussed out concessions to the poor, tired players.

Serve technique has evolved a lot. Gonzales was a bit more conventional,
but neither player did much of a knee bend--to a degree, Hoad seemed to
    torque around his left foot.

Finally, there was something of Federer's grace in Gonzales' movement.

    Great treat!!!

It's a wood court. I've played on a basketball court and it was a bit
like this. The ball actually accelerates after the bounce, rebound
effect, which is opposite to what you see on normal courts.

No benches, huh? No wussed out concessions to the poor, tired players.

You suck it up, fitness is a part of sport.

Serve technique has evolved a lot. Gonzales was a bit more conventional,

They had special serve rules because Gonzales was so dominant, eg he had
to stand 3 feet beyond baseline when serving in some tournaments to give receiver more time, and wasn't allowed to jump ie couldn't have both
feet off ground at contact. He still dominated on serve.

Finally, there was something of Federer's grace in Gonzales' movement.

    Great treat!!!

Yes, and this was years past his best. In this match he actually came
out of retirement to earn more money for his tennis resorts.

Man imagine if we could have matches involving peak Hoad, Laver, Pancho, McEnroe on grass with wood rackets. Couldn't get any better.

Was this a because-of-Gonzalez rule? That you had to have feet on the
ground? If we still had a rule like that, we'd have to have another
hawkeye to enforce it. Some things are better forgotten.

Anyways, not much point in bending the knees much, if you aren't allowed

effect, which is opposite to what you see on normal courts.

No benches, huh? No wussed out concessions to the poor, tired players. >>>> You suck it up, fitness is a part of sport.

Serve technique has evolved a lot. Gonzales was a bit more
conventional, but neither player did much of a knee bend--to a
degree, Hoad seemed to torque around his left foot.

They had special serve rules because Gonzales was so dominant, eg he
had to stand 3 feet beyond baseline when serving in some tournaments
to give receiver more time, and wasn't allowed to jump ie couldn't
have both feet off ground at contact. He still dominated on serve.

Finally, there was something of Federer's grace in Gonzales' movement. >>>>>
    Great treat!!!

Yes, and this was years past his best. In this match he actually came >>>> out of retirement to earn more money for his tennis resorts.

Man imagine if we could have matches involving peak Hoad, Laver,
Pancho, McEnroe on grass with wood rackets. Couldn't get any better.
If there is a Wikipedia entry for "Aussie", Hoad's picture should be
right there up at the top.

He was an intelligent and articulate guy, smarter than most tennis
players. He was also good looking and arguably the best tennis player
of all time. Talk about winning the genetic lottery!
Only smart thing he did was to retire in time before Laver etc came on the scene, who would have crushed him like a bug! Borg did not and got whipped by Mac, before he was manhandled by Lendl, Haarhuis, Annacone and my aunt!

    Pre-transition or post-transition?

    ;^)

Was this a because-of-Gonzalez rule? That you had to have feet on the
ground? If we still had a rule like that, we'd have to have another
hawkeye to enforce it. Some things are better forgotten.

Anyways, not much point in bending the knees much, if you aren't

Hoad and Pancho would crush Braasch like a bug 61 60.

Braasch of the changeover cigarette break?

    Yep, that's him.

A bit of huffing and puffing, and down goes Gonzalez.

Wasn't he ....quite short? Like Chang....?

    Hoad's legacy is actually interesting.

Amateur ranks : Just one year before Trabert actually did same than Hoad a year later.

Later. Trabert won some pro titles...Hoad not so...

Why Hoad then? Apparently shorter guys need self-esteem boost?
