    mikko, do you recall Nixon?

Definitely at the time I loathed the man, as almost every college-age
male did because in spite of trying to convince voters during the 1968
pres campaign, he had no real intent to pull out of Vietnam in the short
term. So it looked to me like he was trying to get me killed.

Plus, he was about as square as a person could be, unlike people like
RFK, etc. Scored 0 on the charisma test.

But over a long period I came to the conclusion that he was an intellectually/politically gifted man who was also both paranoid and
    personally insecure.

Unlike Trump, Nixon actually had well-conceived policies, and he may
have even been motivated to lead the US in a generally positive
direction. But he was so insecure as to resort to spy-like hijinx to
    retain power.

The only reason Trump could have looked good to many was that he
followed Obama. If there had been no Obama, Trump would still be trying
to be an entertainer on TV, and a general huckster everywhere else.

Yes. Obama made the "you didn't build that" speech. A Birtherist

    No arguments there.

Two points...it's not funny that the ascendant generation(s) seem to
find no candidates for leadership who are able to build a large enough consensus to assume legitimate power. Why this is I don't know, but it
    seems unnatural.

Second point: we always start with the assumption that democracy is the
basis for good governance, but is this actually true? Naturally, I like thinking that I have some control over leadership/policy--it's all I've
ever know, and was literally raised (indoctrinated?) to think this, and
in a country as wealthy as the US was, and still is, there's lots of
room for political inefficiency. But in point of fact, is western
democracy an evolutionary mis-step, a 3000 old experiment with mixed
    success?

I don't know the answer to this, but I think it's time to start thing
    about it.

Nixon was nowhere near being a bad President. He was a foreign policy genius and he
disentangled us from the Democrats' ill fated war in Vietnam.

Fuck off with that bullshit. Nixon *esccalated* the Vietnam war when first >elected, and he prolonged it by sabotaging the peace talks before the 1968 election.
He wasn't President until 1969, you stupid dwarf. As usual, you have
ZERO proof his campaign interfered with negotiations. And if your Alzheimer-ridden brain can recall, we got out of Vietnam under Nixon.

A shame you didn't get drafted and killed over there.
