• Wimbledon 2023: I am pissed off at the end of the day

From Kalevi Kolttonen@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jul 6 22:02:43 2023
    Hello!

Here are some scattered remarks about
    Wimbledon 2023 first week's Thursday.

Michael Mmoh's good form did not last for long. We
remember that he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime
just a short while ago. Today he faced Germany's
Maximilian Marterer and lost in straight sets 3-0.

I did not see that match, but if anybody else did,
    I would appreciate your comments.

I must confess that I have never seen Marterer's
matches. If I remember right, I checked and his
highest ATP ranking has been 48 during 2018.
Now I think his ranking is even below 150.

So at least based on Marterer's ranking, one would
assume that Michael Mmoh had a real chance of
winning their battle. Not having seen the match
it is impossible for me to tell whether Mmoh
played badly or was Marterer just in excellent
    form or whatever.

The biggest upset of the day was seen early
on the centre court. Great Britains Liam Broady
defeated Casper Ruud in five sets. I did not
see this match, but it is strange that the
fifth set went 6-0! Again, if somebody saw
the match, I would like to hear what happened.

Finally, the reason why I am pissed off now
is the following: I was enjoying the battle
between Andy Murray and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The first two sets were extremely close and
were decided in a tie-break. Tsitsipas
won the first set and Andy won the second.

The third set was also close, but Andy
broke Stefanos once. He served for the
set at 5-4 and succeeded to win it. There
was some drama, as at 40-15, I guess Andy
slipped pretty badly and yelled in pain!

He fell down, but apparently was not injured.
We were not shown a replay of that event, so
I cannot tell what exactly happended there.

Anyway, at 40-30, Andy won the following
point and as I already mentioned, he
    took the third set.

I was pumped up and prepared to watch
the fourth set, but the damn umpire
interrupted the match! It will continue on
    Friday.

Why did she do that? They played on a centre
court while the roof was closed and the articial
lights were functioning well. The spectators
    wanted more. What a letdown.

    br,
    KK

Rudd has said that he liked grass for golf better than for tennis. I saw
the match, he seemed to shut down shop after the fourth set. Injured? Frustrated? Tired? Fed up with the crowd? I am not sure.

He slipped but looked like he didn't hurt anything. No awkward knee or
ankle bend. But like the drama queen he often is, he played it up like
he had been shot with a gun in the hip.

He fell down, but apparently was not injured.

Wimbledon has a curfew and that is why they stopped it. Too bad,
Murray's serve was really rolling and he was playing well in the moment.
    I hope he wins tomorrow.

You are right. The word "curfew" is actually
completely new to me. I googled for "curfew
wimbledon 2023" and got this result:

"All matches must stop at 11 p.m. local time,
    according to tournament rules."

So lame and just another stupid rule at Wimbledon.

It is incredible that they have even dictated the
colour of the underwear that players have to use.
According to this, they changed the rule for women
    for Wimbledon 2023:

    https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/other-sport/tennis/wimbledon-announce-new-underwear-rule-27244514

I took a quick glance and did not see whether it
applies to men, too. I guess not. They still have
    to wear all white.

I dislike night matches at both natural surface slams, FO and Wimbledon.

It should not be happening at all.

The lights are there for closed roofs and dark clouds and so on not for night marathons.

    Wimbledon curfew is a minimum.

yeah agree, it's very unfair for the players too. If they'd let Murray keep on playing like they would have at the AO he or Tsitsi would be up til 2am at the earliest with the presser etc.

read my previous post you'll learn it's not lame, it's cos the people that live nearby and on-route to Wimbledon town(they go via the village) or Southfields(which is via a major residential area) don't want 20,000 people chatting and waking them up at
    1am.

yes it's great and called tradition, it's very good that they stick to it, cos it is a tradition that makes Wimbledon very special. We have several tennis clubs over here which a white only clothing policy, if you want to wear something else go and play
    somewhere else.

Ruud has said "grass is for golf" and Broady is actually a very very good grass player that turns up once a year, he also looks like he's lost a lot of weight so is clearly in good fitness/form + he was on Centre Court at Wimbledon being backed by the

yes agree it FANTASTIC the way Murray was playing and majorly sucked that the umpire-ess stopped the match, but to be fair to her there's an 11pm Wimbledon curfew, so they have to finish by then. Despite being in an enclosed arena you can still hear the
crowd cheering from the streets outside at that time of night. That won't affect many residents to be honest, but there are some roads right next to the grounds which definitely would, also you'd have 20,000 people chatting and wandering the streets
afterwards. It's a very posh/nice area around there and they are worried about upsetting the residents, as they have to put up with a lot during the 2 weeks, like endless traffic restrictions these days. Even in the village(which is a 10min walk) the
pubs shut around midnight and even during normal times there aren't any late pubs or anything anymore(there used to be places and Iceberg would be partying til til 2am there), but during last decade they've even put up signs that say "Please keep the
noise down when you leave for the residents".

    You fucking paranoid lunatic sicko!

    Get fucking real!

    Michael Mmoh beat Felix Auger-Aliassime
just a few days ago in a huge Grand Slam
tournament. Felix is currently ranked 12
and has been inside the Top 10 very recently.

It takes some serious effort to beat A-A.
Michael Mmoh played very well. Based on that
performance, he should have had good
    chances against Marterer.

I dislike night matches at both natural surface slams, FO and Wimbledon.

There's nothing like orange crush under the lights on a warm
    Mediterranean evening.

Lights are OK. Indoor slams, OTOH, are only the lesser of two evils.
Evil, nevertheless. All slams that allow play indoors should be deducted
    one prestige point.

It should not be happening at all.

Curfews are against free speech. "My racquet wasn't allowed to talk",

Jokes and trolling aside, night scheduling, same as roofs, serve a purpose, continuing play and TV slots in more than just one time zone.

    I get it.

We here benefit from AO night matches, e.g. it's lovely to watch tennis AO final in winter sunday at 9:30 am.

So why shouldn't they and America get a taste of it. Makes sense.

Still, hardcourts is one thing, but natural surfaces, clay and especially grass and night matches under the lights?

It's a hideous combo for me.

Especially when you see that Wimbledon neighborhood is dead at that time, it's no fun for players and fans alike.

If it was some party destination like Umag, then night matches would be much more desirable.

actuallycompletely new to me. I googled for "curfew wimbledon 2023" and got this result:"All matches must stop at 11 p.m. local time, according to tournament rules."So lame and just another stupid rule at Wimbledon. It is incredible that they have even
dictated thecolour of the underwear that players have to use.According to this, they changed the rule for womenfor Wimbledon 2023: https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/other-sport/tennis/wimbledon-announce-new-underwear-rule-27244514I took a quick glance
and did not see whether itapplies to men, too. I guess not. They still haveto wear all white.br,KK

The lights are there for closed roofs and dark clouds and so on not for night marathons.

    Wimbledon curfew is a minimum.
Curfews are against free speech. "My racquet wasn't allowed to talk",
said the dejected Sampras. Curfews are evil.

yes, very much agree, they never should have built the stupid roof on Centre and now Court One's court! with rain delays etc that's what made it such a difficult tournament to win. Oh but but in 2001 they had to play the final on a Monday and what a
crime that was, they had to allow absolutely anyone in to watch the final and you one of the best crowd atmospheres ever! it basically true indoor slam matches are a threat to democracy cos there's no chance of random people getting in when it rains! oh
oh but the huge TV companies won't make so much money boo hoo

    Indoor vs no indoor.

    Ancient stuff.

Let' em play. If organizers do their job, it is players to adapt.

I do not understand who cares if roof is closed or not?

Yes. I am extremely happy that Grand Slams now have roofs
over their most important courts. Rain delays are so disgusting
and they can postpone important matches for several hours,
even days. It is a big plus when the schedules need not be
    changed.

I do not understand who cares if roof is closed or not?

The only reason to care about that is that it affects
the matches. You see, the conditions are not the same
anymore when they have closed the roof. It has to
do with the wind, the sun and the temperature.

As one example, the big servers benefit from the closed
roofs, since their ball toss can then be done under
circumstances comparable to indoor tennis halls
(i.e. no wind, no sun to distract your eyes).

Artificial light slows you eye senses, that is true.

    Borg complained that a lot.

But closing the roof also makes natural surfaces slower and not affected by random factors like wind?

I agree they should be outdoor unless it's raining. That's bad luck and players have to suck it up on those occasions.

The problem is not rain or not for a one match, but unfair scheduling of matches when things accumulate....
