The Portlandian, the Internet's premier source of Tonya News
December 31, 2018 Edition - SPECIAL NEW YEAR'S EVE EDITION
(C) 2018 Portland Ice Skating Society
http://www.pdxiss.org *****************************************************************
As we enter the final hours of 2018, we look back on the year
that has passed. And what a year it's been! An outstanding year
for Tonya, and clearly the best year for Tonyaphiles since 1991
and with more coverage of Tonya in the media than at any time
since 1994. And unlike that year, it's been mostly positive this
time around. It's seen her make many public appearances,
culminating with making it to the final of Dancing With The
Stars back in May.
We think it's only appropriate that we celebrate by paying
tribute to the thing that has started it all - the movie "I,
Tonya".
Without doubt one of the highlights of that film is its
soundtrack. Craig Gillespie and his team of musicians and
advisors put together a carefully curated collection ranging from
Doris Day to the Violent Femmes that rightfully earned it the
title of "Goodfellas of Figure Skating". So what better way to
send off one of the best Tonya years ever than by playing the
soundtrack to the film that made it all possible?
Now there are other "I, Tonya" playlists out there, but we
believe we've assembled the one that's most complete, including
virtually every piece of music that's in the film apart from a
handful of unidentified production library tracks that probably
aren't on-line anyway. It includes many tracks that's not on the
official soundtrack album. We've hunted down the best-quality
videos, both picture and sound-wise, for maximum enjoyment,
including some obscure performances.
Unfortunately Casey Kasem and Wolfman Jack are now spinning discs
up in the big radio station in the sky, so you'll just have to
put up with our own Terry Hall, the poor man's Dr. Johnny Fever,
counting down the Tonya Top Twenty-Eight (plus one bonus track)
from Coast To Coast. So don't touch that dial!
"I, TONYA" - THE SOUNDTRACK
Here's the YouTube playlist - we recommend using Chrome fitted
with the AdGuard ad-blocker to eliminate interruptions and set to
full-screen mode. Feed it through to the stereo and the biggest
monitor you've got, hit Play All and kick back and enjoy:

Comments on the individual tracks below:
1. First up, "I, Tonya - Behind the Soundtrack" with Craig
Gillespie, Music Supervisor Sue Jacobs and composers Peter Nashel
& Mark Batson, reveals how Tonya was so toxic that alot of songs
nearly didn't make it. Peter Nashel also composed three pieces
for the film.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HhGo7pQMA0
2. Mark Batson - "Fair To Love Me" (2017).
Title logo song, also played when Jeff & Shawn storm out and
drive to Sun Valley. Written especially for the movie. Since
starting out as a jazz saxophonist, Batson has gone on to write
the scores to dozens of films and TV shows:

3. Cliff Richard - "Devil Woman" (1976).
LaVona & Tonya meet Diane for the first time. Actually an
anachronism, since Tonya met Diane in 1974, but contrary to
popular belief I think that "Devil Woman" refers to baby Tonya
rather than LaVona, since she skates up behind Diane and "gets
her from behind":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tuAkdlLhTE
4. Dr. Feelgood - "Hey Mama Keep Your Big Mouth Shut" (1977).
Played when LaVona describes her hitting Tonya "once", and
through a montage of her hitting Tonya multiple times.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoBZNOOj9dw
5. Fun Lovin' Criminals - "Shining Star" (1998).
Rabbit coat scene, and also when Tonya returns home to find a
fridge full of Dove Bars.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trXJGsgtJQQ
6. Norman Greenbaum - Spirit In The Sky (1970).
This is the song that's playing when Tonya's dad drives off. Who
says religious music has to be boring?
It's danced to by Pan's People on the BBC's Top Of The Pops show,
circa Christmas 1973. Okay, so we have to put up with the evil
Jimmy Savile at the start and finish, who shortly after his death
in 2012 was outed as one of Britain's biggest sex offenders, but
even he can't spoil a Pan's People performance:

7. Bad Company - "Shooting Star" (1975). Tonya fixes Jeff's car:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gGjfJHu9wI
8. Dire Straits - "Romeo & Juliet" (1980).
Tonya & Jeff's romance. Mark Knopfler originally refused
permission for this song to be used, but changed his mind after
the film's music supervisor badgered him into looking at the
completed film:

9. ZZ Top - "Sleeping Bag" (1985).
Tonya is shown skating to this at Skate America in 1986 - in
fact, Tonya was actually still skating to classical music at this
stage, and didn't skate to "Sleeping Bag" until the 1991/92
season.
An added piece of Tonya trivia: the girl in the video is Heather
Langenkamp, of "Nightmare on Elm Street" fame, who later played
Nancy Kerrigan in the TV movie "Tonya & Nancy - The Inside
Story":

10. Marshall Tucker Band - "Can't You See" (1973).
Music playing in background when Tonya is sewing a dress & Jeff
is skidding in a truck:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-48Za7VZR_c
11. Doris Day - "Dream A Little Dream" (1958).
Wedding scene, and the boxing scene at the end:

12. Joanie Sommers - "Little Girl Bad" (1962).
Triple axel scene (slo-mo):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fbr9Rth4dRI
13. Foreigner - "Feels Like the First Time" (1977).
End of Tonya's 1991 U.S. Nationals Long Program. From the Dutch
show TopPop in 1977:

14. Hot Chocolate - "Every 1's a Winner" (1978).
Scene after Tonya first walks out on Jeff. A cover version by Gun
is used in the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SFFRaIUisY
15. En Vogue - "Free Your Mind" (1992). Tonya explains that she &
Nancy were friends:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7iQbBbMAFE
16. LaTour - "People Are Still Having Sex" (1991). Tonya's 1992
Olympic Short Program.
William LaTour was a two-hit wonder. His second song "Blue" was
used in the film "Basic Instinct", which means that although he
only had two hits, both of them have now been used in films:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ImRyPymRAM
17. Supertramp - "Goodbye Stranger" (1979).
Played when Tonya leaves Jeff during the long dolly shot where
the camera goes out of the house and down the road.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aykOwwRf-Q
18. Chris Stills - "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" (2017).
Jeff threatens Tonya with a gun. A cover of the Bee Gees song
recorded especially for the soundtrack.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1VH721Q0sE
19. Heart - "Barracuda" (1977).
Tonya training montage, and when Tonya confronts the skating
judge in the car park about her scores:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeMvMNpvB5M
20. Kikback - "Get It Get It" (2017).
This newly-released old-school '90s-style hip-hop track is
playing in the background in the strip joint when Jeff & Shawn
plot the death threat:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DqGLLGWorQ
21. Laura Branigan - "Gloria" (1982).
Played when Shawn's "hit men" are on the way to Portland, and
also when Shane is later caught. This is an early live
performance on the BBC from January 1983:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsMrKSmnbQM
22. Peter Nashel - "Tonya Suite".
Jeff is interviewed by FBI, pays Shawn a grand for the job. One
of three pieces specially composed by Nashel for the film. Also
plays during the end credits and at other times in the film:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ma7qsXAOKyY
23. Peter Nashel - "The Incident". Shane stalks and whacks Nancy
at Cobo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKFoLN5Sbl4
24. Violent Femmes - "Gone Daddy Gone" (1983). Jeff discovers
what Shawn has done:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sMdIutZMmI
25. Peter Nashel - "A Fair Shot". Jeff arranges to meet Shawn at
the restaurant.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PIbluCwJ3Q
26. Chicago - "25 or 6 to 4" (1969).
Tonya confesses to the FBI, leaves Jeff for the final time. Live,
Tanglewood, Lenox MA. July 1970 - and in stereo!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uAUoz7jimg
27. Fleetwood Mac - "The Chain" (1977).
The media circus, Jeff & Shawn arrested. "I was loved for a
minute...":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDG2m5hN1vo
28. Siouxsie & The Banshees - "The Passenger" (1987).
End credits. Originally by Iggy Pop, but you can't complain about
this version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nAON-MwUPY
Finally, a song that wasn't on the "I, Tonya" soundtrack, but
SHOULD have been:
29. Suzi Quatro - "The Wild One" (1974)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgKyXghZShE
Still think it needed some E.L.O. though...
