The Portlandian, the Internet's premier source of Tonya News

November 12, 2018 Edition - ANNUAL TONYA BIRTHDAY EDITION
    (C) 2018 Portland Ice Skating Society
    http://www.pdxiss.org *****************************************************************

Yes, you guessed it, it's Tonya's birthday - she turns 48 today -
and with it comes the annual birthday edition of "The
Portlandian". Time has just flown, hasn't it? The wide release of
"I, Tonya" has seen a massive upsurge in Tonya-related events &
activities this year, easily the biggest amount of coverage since
'94, with the highlight being Tonya's invite to the Golden Globes
and her stint on Dancing With The Stars.

So what better way to celebrate than with a party? And if you're
in Portland, then you're in luck - the people behind the
Tonya/Nancy drag queen wrestling match ealier this year have done
it again. Tonight, they're holding a Tonya birthday party at
Chapel Hill to celebrate "the baddest bitch in figure skating" as
they put it. The event starts at 8pm, with a theme of 90s ice
skaters and will feature 90s music all night and a drag show at
11pm. Admission is ten bucks or $6.66 (get it?) if you come in
    costume:

No word on whether the Golden Girl herself will turn up - but who
    knows?

    TONYA HARDING'S DAY OFF

We've great news for Tonyaphiles in the Chicago area - Tonya will
be in the Windy City next weekend, where she'll be signing
autographs at the Chicago Sports Spectacular on Friday the 16th.
The event will take place at the following location:

    Donald E Stephens Convention Center
    5555 N River Rd,
    Rosemont, IL 60018

    https://chicagosportsspectacular.com/friday-guests

Most of the other guests are assorted baseball and football
players, (and a few cast members from "The Sopranos") - so Tonya
    will be right at home.

Tonya will be present from 6:30 - 8:00pm. For the princely sum of
50 bucks, she will sign an item of your choice. And for an extra
20, she'll write an inscription (up to 3 words). For another 50,
you can have your photo taken with her. What better Christmas
gift for the Tonyaphile in your life?

    https://chicagosportsspectacular.com/autograph-tickets?olsPage=products%2Ftonya-harding-any-item

Okay, so it's not actually a day off in Chicago like Ferris
Bueller's. But like the John Hughes movie, Tonya's a classic that
has stood the test of time!

    TONYAWEEN - PART 2

Tonya Halloween costumes have a long history, here's one of the
very earliest ones from the 90's:

    http://farm1.static.flickr.com/24/38590948_d1ed86156c_o.jpg

This was the first Halloween since "I, Tonya" went into full
release, and as predicted, thousands of fake Tonya's, Nancy's,
Lavona's and even the odd Shawn were spotted trick or treating or
at parties across the United States, with sightings from Chapel
    Hill, NC. to Phoenix AZ.

    http://ktar.com/story/2284946/this-halloween-marks-the-last-for-a-phoenix-costume-store/

So let's take a look at some of the best ones. In addition to the
now inevitable re-enactments of "The Incident" (which we've
pretty much left out), here's some of the best ones. First up,
the celebrities: some went the bad taste route - here's Chloe
Grace Moretz as a bloody Tonya, though in 1991-costume rather
    than '94:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bpct4CJhfBK/

and Trisha Yearwood of The Food Network:

    https://food.fnr.sndimg.com/content/dam/images/food/fullset/2018/9/21/0/YWSP01_Trisha-Friend-02.jpg

But then Halloween has never been about good taste.

Another Margo - country singer Margo Price is a bit more classy.
Her costume was made by an outfit called Solstice Intimates.

Now onto what ordinary civilians did - and some of them are just
as good. This one re-creates an iconic pose:

    https://www.purewow.com/news/tonya-harding-nancy-kerrigan-costume-halloween-2018

Many were inspired by Triple Axel Tonya, recreating her teal-blue
    dress:

Everyone knows that Tonya loves a game of pool. So why not Tonya
    on a pool table?

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp30h9Tlp3u/

Some channeled the costumes that Tonya wore to Albertville:

Others a crying Tonya from Lillehammer:

    Smoking Tonya was another favorite:

    Some recreated the movie posters:

    Some went with companions:

    Tonya & Jeff:

An unusual pair: Nancy & Jeff
    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bpfm-dmhCdz/

    Tonya, Nancy & Jeff
    https://www.instagram.com/p/BpncZd1By_p/

Second only to Tonya in popularity was Tonya's mom, with plenty
of phony LaVona's around as well, either on their own, or with
    friends:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bph0Wf6FFGy/ https://www.instagram.com/p/Bpfqv6hgKQk/ https://www.instagram.com/p/BpeHFS0Hagu/

Some went the full monty - Nancy, Jeff, Tonya, Shawn & LaVona: https://www.instagram.com/p/BpfVb02B0e4/

Hmmm... something familiar about these two... a couple of staff
    at TMZ celebrate Tonyaween:

    https://images.tmz.com/2018/10/31/tmz-staff-halloween-costumes-2018-photos-4.jpg

Actually, given the amount of mileage TMZ has got out of Tonya
over the years, they should be sticking up a statue of her in
their lobby, not just dressing up.

What happens when you combine Tonya & Nancy with another famous
'90s scandal, JonBenet Ramsey? Why, baby Tonyas, of course!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BpnuO0QD8EB/ https://www.instagram.com/p/BpnuO0QD8EB/ https://www.instagram.com/p/BpnPktLhDn7/

And finally, here's something you don't see everyday - Tonya and
    a T-Rex:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bpm2Re4hAtN/

All of which raises the question: did Margot Robbie dress up as
Tonya - and was Tonya dressed up as Margot?

    A NEW POSITIVE TONYA ARTICLE

Those reappraisals of Tonya that started with Sarah Marshall's
"Remote Control" five years ago just keep on coming in. The
latest is this one from Jessica Brofsky of Kitsch Mag who
describes Tonya as "A Shining American Star":

    https://kitschmag.com/2018/11/06/tonya-harding-a-shining-american-star/

If the movie dissolves truth—complicating it with unreliable
narrators and overlaid contradictory actions, with Harding’s
abuse by her own mother, her own husband, by the United States
Figure Skating Association (USFSA), by the media—it is because
there was no truth in the case to begin with.

Tonya was 23 at the time of the incident. It took another 23
years for people to listen, and at that point she wasn’t even
asking them to. But her story and her silencing was never just
about Tonya; she was always a constellation of truths.

    SEVERAL CLASSIC TONYA BOOKS REPUBLISHED

In recent months several Tonya classics have been reissued as e-
books in the wake of the movie.

Abby Haight & Julie Vader's "Fire On Ice", written by two
Oregonian journalists, was one of two quicky paperbacks published
in February 1994 to cash in on interest surrounding the incident:

    http://www.oregonlive.com/books/index.ssf/2017/11/bookmarks_wordstock_2017_attendance.html
(has a nice, rare photo of Tonya
    jumping)

The second, "Thin Ice: The Complete, Uncensored Story of Tonya
Harding" by Frank Coffey & Joe Layden, has also been republished
    in electronic format.

    https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/thin-ice-frank-coffey/1121136334?type=eBook

    https://www.amazon.com/Thin-Ice-Complete-Uncensored-Harding-ebook/dp/B078QT52SM

    https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2335384982

Both are pretty much essential reading for any budding
Tonyaphile, and with dead-tree versions going for ridiculous
prices these days thanks to the movie these reissues are welcome.
Be aware, however, that both are straight reprints of 1994
versions, with no updates, so the story finishes around the end
    of January '94.

Also out in e-book is "Women on Ice" by Cynthia Baughman, a
collection of feminist essays about the scandal published in
1995. This one is less readable than the others and at almost 42
bucks just for a digital copy you'd be better off buying used or
seeing if you can get it from a library. As with the others, it's
    not updated:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0415911516/ref=as_li_tf_il?ie=UTF8&tag=boorio-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399349&creativeASIN=0415911516

Meanwhile, you can read Tonya's own story in an updated second
    edition of "The Tonya Tapes":

    https://www.amazon.com/Tonya-Tapes-2nd-Lynda-Prouse-ebook/dp/B06XKFD7DM/ref=pd_sbs_351_2/144-7914238-1710635?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=M9DZSN2QFHE0G7JBECEP

It's the perfect last-minute (digital) stocking-stuffer for any
    Tonyaphile.

    MORE TONYA FAN ART

    Amy Hall - https://www.instagram.com/p/BfGgZ0xnAVM/

    Henry Boon - https://www.instagram.com/p/BfywXGdBLaK/
Henry says he hadn't heard about Tonya before:

Really enjoyed this film and the story behind it. Hadn’t heard
about Tonya Hardings misfortune in the figure skating world
before. It’s such a shame as she was an incredible figure
skater. Worth a watch if you’ve not seen it yet.

warren_peace82 takes the Sharp Edges-era look as an inspiration:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bf1-hw6nF1D/

Some were inspired by scenes in the movie that didn't actually
happen in real life - first up, blood-covered Tonya:

    Kaida Lacerda - https://www.instagram.com/p/BfRDdPglCNc/

    Blaine Bourgeois - https://www.instagram.com/p/BpARLNNl3Ny/

    Benita Gianina - https://www.instagram.com/p/BoRGOGyDCg_/

Pin Post's suck my d**k pin captures one of I, Tonya's most
    memorable moments:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bf1WJ_MHwAp/

Dorian Horvatic of Croatia's recreation of the SMD sequence in
graphite pencil on A4 hammer paper took 12 hours of work:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BfMKJqWAHvs/

This movie was so great - I watched it with @giamboldini and
@tany_imnida on New Year’s Eve, at 4 AM - because why not. We
were all still hyped but in need of a good flick, so we went with
this, and boy, were we swept off our feet. Margot was
extraordinary in the role od Tonya, and Allison Janney as Tonya’s
mother was nothing short of breathtaking - I am very glad they
both recieved Oscar nominations for their roles. Sebastian Stan
was also great. It tells Tonya’s story really well and I know
some people still think she knew about the assault, maybe even
plotted it herself - but I find that harder to believe than what
was told in the movie. The events are very complex but that’s
what it makes it most likely to be true - life is never simple,
things get out of hand and you turn around to find yourself in a
place you thought you’d never be in. So I was motivated to draw
this scene, the “suck my dick” scene where Tonya curses out the
judges for not giving her a fair shot; this scene felt so right.

Tonya's mother LaVona often crops up frequently:

    Laura Tran - https://www.instagram.com/p/BfobRwfngnD/

    Louisa Esposito - https://www.instagram.com/p/BpUb4BblRst/

    Steven Mellina - https://www.instagram.com/p/Bf_GljhBBeA/

Zach Nutman takes an LGBT perspective on the affair: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bf0-0TNgJHT/

    Rachel E - a t-shirt featuring an asthmatic Tonya: https://www.instagram.com/p/BfvAaECFd38/

Ana Elisa presents what looks like an illustrated review in
Spanish. But you don't need to know much Spanish to understand
    "Es Un Imbecil" for Shawn:
    https://www.instagram.com/p/BfjAgJTh05O/

Luis Alberto Correa says "like what if I, Tonya were an 80s
anime? I mean it was perfect, but still, like, what if?" https://www.instagram.com/p/BfcduQlnswQ/

KaitiVanWormer - Tonya reflecting on her life in her kitchen: https://www.instagram.com/p/BfcZjTwFlEc/

bb_doodles - "Also i've been so curious about Tonya Harding's
story, she really is a peach tbh"
    https://www.instagram.com/p/BfcV5yKDJvI/

Ara M. Acevedo recreates the 3axel & mirror scenes: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bfbmy7EHK_w/

And finally, JB slusher has come up with something unusual - a
Tonya/Nancy dirty/clean magnet for the dishwasher (which is the
"clean" side depends on whether you're a Tonyaphile or not, I
    guess):

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Be5uztOhbVc/

    More next time.

    THE AGE OF TONYAQUARIUS

Here at the PDXISS we're used to correcting errors about Tonya.
But a few months ago we had the opportunity to correct one of an
unusual kind, even by our standards.

Matthew Currie is an astrologer. And he's written two in-depth
    analyses of Tonya's star charts:

    http://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/ohmystars/2018/01/astrology-redemption-tonya-harding-part-one.html

    http://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/ohmystars/2018/01/tonya-harding-nancy-kerrigan-i-tonya-astrology.html

But one of his charts contained a glaring deficiency - his one of
"the incident". Matthew didn't know the exact time of the attack,
so he just made the assumption it was 12 noon on the 6th of
January. We supplied him with the correct time - approx 14:40
    Detroit time.

Now some people might think that astrology is alot of "Taurus in
retrograde motion through Uranus". Or in other words, bullshit.
But in these days of fake news, we at the Special Duties Section
think that it's important that even bullshit should be done
right. And thanks to us, Tonya's astrology chart is now ACCURATE
    bullshit.

Once again with Tonya, everyone has their own truth.

I mean, her three planet stellium in Scorpio was opposed by a
close Moon-Saturn conjunction in Taurus? Jeez - this chick just
    didn't stand a chance...

    A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME

Or, LaVona's Sixth Husband speaks out.

We finish with a surprise birthday present. In this exclusive
interview with "Entertainment Weekly", one of the unexpected
stars of "I, Tonya", Little Man, spills the beans on working with
Allison Janney (with a bit of help from Steven Rogers, who
"assisted" with his answers to the questions):

    http://ew.com/movies/2017/12/19/i-tonya-bird-interview-allison-janney/#disqus_thread

That's it for another issue. And remember, if you're
participating in "Movember", just don't go totally over the top
and grow a "Gilloolystache". Because that would be going way too
    far...

As far anything Tonya-related in the theatres go, one place that used to be
a pornographic film house, around here, until it was torn down, did have the Wedding Night sex video in February of 1994, titled as "Tonya Harding. Bad Girl" on the theater's marquis. That was before that theater got torn down,
and restaurant built on the site.

I wonder how many porn theatres had the Wedding Night Video.

It was a Carrow's restaurant, when the restaurant was built, and is now a Golden Corrall Buffet.

Yes, you guessed it, it's Tonya's birthday - she turns 48 today -
and with it comes the annual birthday edition of "The
Portlandian". Time has just flown, hasn't it? The wide release of
    "I, Tonya"

I thought to see I, Tonya, the only choices I had were to eiher watch it on
a pirate movie site, or drive down to Tijuana to see it at the Cinemex Zona Rio, when it was playing there.

Probably about the same as the number of people still using 8-track tapes - porn cinemas were just about dead when that came out. Porn largely went over
    to video in the 80's.

You can't have looked very hard, Chuckie - it was in several hundred theaters at its peak. It certainly would have been screening in the Sacramento area.

Rio, when it was playing there.

You can't have looked very hard, Chuckie - it was in several hundred

    area.

While I still had a car, before I had to get rid of it becuase of potential future transmission problems in the future, I did go down to the Cinemex
Zona Rio to see I, Tonya. That was the ONLY place to go to see it. And the Cinemex Zona Rio is easily reached after crossing the border, you just get
into the lanes for Paseo Del Heroes after going through the Customs station.
I was called "Yo, Tonya" in Mexico, Spanish for I, Tonya. I can say it was worth the 530 mile drive to Tijuana to see it. They only thing I did not
like was gas prices that are so much higher than anywhere else in
California, because of year round requirements for these so called "non polluting" blends, in Southern California.

There are a few movies that are generally not available in the USA, except
at a few "fine arts" type theaters. This includes a couple of unofficial
Star Wars movies. They are not part of the Star Wars trilogy or produced by Disney/Lucasfilm. One of these produced in Latin America where I had to go
to the Cinemex Zona Rio to see is "Escuadron Picaro: Una Historia De Star Wars", literal translation, Rouge Squadron: A Star Wars Story". That was
made in 2016. I had to drive the 530 miles to Tijuana to see it.

Now, for someone like Jeanne, there would have been NO way for her to ever
got to Tijuana, as the ONLY way without a car would have been to take the Coaster to San Diego, and then switch to the trolley in San Diego. However,
to get the train station in Anaheim, that would be NO WAY to get to the
Anaheim train station from Los Angeles WITHOUT a car.

You drove hundreds of miles to see a commercially available film??? I
    don't believe it.

It was the closest place to Sacramento I could find to go see it. And like I said, it was worth the 530 mile drive to Tijuana to see it.

There are a few movies that are generally not available in the USA,
    except
at a few "fine arts" type theaters. This includes a couple of unofficial
    Star Wars movies.

    You mean, illegal fan flicks.

These were produced in Latin America, and were fully legal to view in
Mexico. So they were NOT illegal, in Mexico. There are some producers in
Cuba that have churned out a few unofficial films, and that can be seen at theaters in Mexico. Becuase of the embargo on Cuba, they cannot be shown in
the USA, but it is fully legal to go and see them in Mexico.

One production company in Cuba even made a couple of unofficial sequels to Disney's "The Little Mermaid", or "La Sirenita" in Spanish. I saw those at
the Cinemex Zona Rio, and it was well worth the 530 mile drive down there
    and see them.

The ONLY thing that makes them illegal, right now, to show in the USA, is
    the embargo on Cuba.

Now, for someone like Jeanne, there would have been NO way for her to
    ever

What the fuck are you talking about. Why would I need to access the
Anaheim train station? Sure, I'd go through the station when I got on the Amtrak from LA to San Diego, but that's different.

The Coaster, though, stops at one of the San Diego Trolley stations, but to
get the Coaster, you would have to to the train station in Anaheim, and
since you don't own a car, that would mean an expensive cab ride for you, as you would have no other way to get to the train station in Anaheim.

I, Tonya did not play in theatres here in California. The ONLY place I could
go see it was at the Cinemex Zona Rio, 530 miles away from my home in Sacramento.

When driving down there, I would drive all night, from Sacramento, on I-5. I would make sure to leave by 1AM, as I wanted to get through Stockton before
the freeway got packed with people driving to jobs in the Bay Area, and
bumper to bumper traffic at 4AM in Stockton.

When driving to there, or to Disneyland, I made sure to leave early enough
to get through Stockton before the 4AM morning rush of people driving to
    jobs in the Bay Area.

What an incredibly stupid lie. It was playing in every chain's threatres.

Well I can say that it was worth the 530 mile drive to Tijuana to see it.
The Cinemex is exactly 530 miles from my home in Sacramento, and easily
reached less than 10 minutes after crossing the border, just get in the
lanes for Paseo De Los Heroes, and it is on the Pavillion shopping mall
    there.

There is also on restaurant chain that no longer operates in the USA, but
does have an location the Pavillion mall there is Applebee's. The all you
can eat ribs they had there at the time were a bargain, at around US$10 at
the time. There used to be Applebees restaurant in Sacramento, but not any more.

McDonald's restaurants in Mexico have menu items no longer available in the USA, incluiding the Angus burger, McWrap, McRib, and Chicken McNuggets (I
used to LOVE those as a kid).
