• NCAA Convention Division I Changes - Part 2

From The NOTBCS Guy@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jan 12 16:11:20 2023
The Division I Board of Directors endorsed the final report of the Transformation Committee. The only thing I think of serious note is, they will now give somewhat serious consideration to make the men's and women's basketball tournaments, as well as the
baseball and softball tournaments, 80 teams (it's supposed to be "at least 25% of the number of schools that sponsor the sport; over 300 do). I can see this being done in basketball, but in baseball/softball, somebody needs to remind these people of the
old six-team regionals, but now they have to figure out a way to make each one a five-team double-elimination tournament.

Oh...and they decided to run their own version of the Women's NIT. I was surprised to discover they don't already run the existing Women's NIT, given that they run the men's one.

There was already a discussion of making the men's tournament ninety.

    By seeds:

    2 v 5
    3 v 4
    L1 v L2 (elimination)
    1 v W2
    W3 v L4 (elimination)
    W1 v W4
    W5 v L6 (elimination)
    W7 v W6 (best of two)

Actually, it would be more like:
    (1) 4 vs 5
    (2) W1 vs 1
    (3) 2 vs 3
    (4) L1 vs L3 (elimination)
    (5) W4 vs L2 (elimination)
    (6) W2 vs W3
    (7) W5 vs L6 (elimination)
    (8) W6 vs W7 (W7 has to win twice)

As long as they don't make it 96 - anything is better than the old 6-team regionals they used when the tournament was 48
