• BAT advice

From mercellusb@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jan 8 09:48:02 2023
I sold my old Audi when we moved from Raleigh to New Orleans. I haven’t had a car for months now. I joined a health club that’s easier to get to on my bicycle, than by car. It’s just my spousal unit and me, and we both work remotely, so the one-
vehicle thing isn’t a problem. I do not need a car.

However, I want a car. I get the BAT email every day. I search on their site for auctions and see some older vehicles that seem to be mechanically sound, that have no reserve, and that are possibly being sold at below-market prices.

I’m looking for a low mileage, older BMW or Mercedes. Does anyone have any BAT horror stories or other constructive advice to share?

    For example: https://bringatrailer.com/mercedes-benz/

I have no useful advice for you I just want to say that I think the mid
1980s Mercedes 300s were the peak of automotive style. I often drool over
    this website: https://www.mercedesmotoring.com/

In 2001 when I bought my LS400 I was *this* close to pulling the trigger on
a 1983 300D instead. Sometimes I still wish I had. Alas practicality won
    out. Probably for the best.

Never cared for that era Mercedes. When I see a late 70s mid 80s 300 series it makes me think of some Beirut cab packed with explosives speeding towards
a busy market. The front grill looks like it came from a mid 70s Chrysler boat.

Kind of like the negative vibe you get when you see a late 30s black Mercedes convertible.

Yep. The W123 Mercedes were (and still are awesome). They weren’t at the
last time I considered buying one, but now they are antiques.

    I think is a beautiful car. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1988-mercedes-benz-560sl-333/

I know I'm in the minority, but I don't. I don't know what this car
is supposed to be. If you watched Top Gear they [somewhat tongue
in check] named the Lexus SC430 "The Worst Car Ever Made." I kind
of feel that this model of Mercedes has some of the same faults.

I know it's a different line, but from 1988 I think these make the 560
    look ten years older.

    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1988-alfa-romeo-quadrifoglio/ https://carsandbids.com/auctions/3Rb0dXoD/1988-porsche-944-turbo-s https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1987-maserati-biturbo-spyder-5/

    IMO, of course.

Maintenance headache and money pit. Might as well make a stack of money,
pour some wax on it and burn it. I know where a convertible is that has
been driven maybe 1000 miles in the past 5 years. It's had $9K worth of repairs done to it in that time ranging from ignition, fuel system,
    electrical, steering, transmission and brakes.

Beautiful car, stuff breaks backing it out of the driveway. I have fully expected to see a wheel fall off and roll down the street. The most
recent event involved the owner setting the aircleaner on fire
after spraying ether trying to start it.

One of my old bosses drove one. Yes he was well acquainted with his
    specialty German mechanic.

At this point they are antiques so of course they are unreliable money
pits. That’s why I prefer to admire them at a distance.

Well by today’s standards these cars never sped anywhere.

And yeah I’ve heard them called German taxicabs, both affectionately and as an insult. There is no accounting for taste.
