On September 22, 1990, CBS was supposed to air the SEC game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Georgia Bulldogs at 3:00 Eastern, and the MLB game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees at 12:00 Eastern. But when a wrench completely out
of CBS' control got thrown into those plans, CBS had a decision to make- do they show college football or baseball? And the decision that they made left some happy, but others furious. This is the story behind the 1990 broadcasting controversy.

Given that Alabumble and Georgia both sucked that year, it's surprising that they were going to broadcast the game at all.

Hey, Alabama went to the Fiesta Bowl that year!

Also, based on where I lived in 1990, CBS apparently showed San Diego State - BYU in my region.

The Yankees did suck as well, but the Red Sox won division. Back then,
not so much now, if your
team sucked and is in a small market it wouldn't get much coverage. Of course today you'd
    get put on The Ocho.

Hell back then your team could be good and not get much coverage. The CFA
was still around and nationally televised games were only a few a week,
most games were only on local TV. Oh and if you lived out of market and
your team wasn’t a national powerhouse, you often had to wait for the
Sunday paper to learn your score.
