• Suppose Twitter truly were a free speech haven

Would it eventually become a bunch of ads for porn, gambling, and drugs? Maybe some racist/xenophobic stuff mixed in too.

I don't have a Twitter account, but from excerpts I see, there already appears to be
    plenty of racism.

Perhaps with Musk will chase-out the anti-science crowd at Twitter.

The underrepresentation of women in academic science is typically attributed, both in scientific literature and in the media, to sexist hiring. Here we report five hiring experiments in which faculty evaluated hypothetical female and male applicants,
using systematically varied profiles disguising identical scholarship, for assistant professorships in biology, engineering, economics, and psychology. Contrary to prevailing assumptions, men and women faculty members from all four fields preferred
female applicants 2:1 over identically qualified males with matching lifestyles (single, married, divorced), with the exception of male economists, who showed no gender preference. Comparing different lifestyles revealed that women preferred divorced
mothers to married fathers and that men preferred mothers who took parental leaves to mothers who did not.

A lot of violent threats, including mine.

Freedom of speech is the freedom to threaten, and that's why we don't have it.

Congress only has no right to pass a law abridging it, but fool yourselves not. Freedom of speech is impossible until you have a homogeneous America.

I’m just speaking hypothetically to what would happen in any forum if you truly removed all filters. People are people. I don’t think that’s what’s going to happen to twitter and I doubt that musk is truly interested in creating a free speech
haven, but I also don’t think the “free speech” crowd is really thinking this through.

I don't believe it's very complicated. I'm not fully understanding what people are losing their minds over.
As I wrote, I believe Twitter already has plenty of racism, they keep the porno and gambling stuff, it's
a fambly chatrum, business as usual. Just apply the rules evenly.

Musk is going to attract a lot of government and media attention. I'm sure the IRS, the SEC, FBI, CIA etc. will
find reasons to investigate him. MSNBC, WaPo, 60 Minutes etc. will suddenly be worried about an 'oligarch'
taking over a lever of the media. They'll invite Bezos and Zuckerberg to comment.

There’s a difference between twitter having the porn/racism stuff there if you want to look for it versus having it fill up your feed. If all the speech filters get removed, it could easily turn into a cesspool, much worse than the current form. How
many Usenet groups became endless steams of ads for viagra or milf webcams? Of course I don’t think musk will really turn twitter into some unfiltered free speech haven, just be careful what you wish for.

Or how you could tell the death of a USENET newsgroup -- it becomes a haven for porn.

I think Musk will ultimately regret owning Twitter.

He has like three other major companies to run and seems to think this will
be a part time gig. Twitter is going to be a high maintenance property and
will ultimately take way more of his time and energy than he expects and no matter what he does will inevitably make have large groups of people who currently admire him, hate him.

He will learn that a lot of the censorship and algorithms he decries were implemented for financial and not ideological reasons when advertisers
start pulling out because they don’t want their messages next to a lot of
the stuff he plans to allow. So either he stops it and loses a lot of
money or keeps it and disappoints his fan base. And no billionaire craves online admiration like Musk.

tl;dr: He thinks he’s buying a plaything but he’s really buying a PITA job.

At the risk of giving Musk more credit than he deserves, I really don't know THAT
much about him. Maybe he is putting his money where his mouth is? I'm pretty sure he has a calculator on his phone too. He *claims* it's not a business decision
as much as it is a personal statement, this appears to back that up.

If it goes tits-up, he'll survive, but what he may not make it through is the amount of
interest the government will show in his personal and business lives. It's coming.
Politicians and the media are already demanding action because a non-Democrat billionaire now owns a major media outlet.
