Yeah but you get to a point where you need to play what you know might be correct.

If you’re down to the final letter and there are fewer possibilities for the final letter than remaining guesses, then it would have been either unnecessary or a mistake to do what xyzzy did. But in James’ case, he had more possible letters than remaining guesses.

Once you have that puzzle down to just the first letter, I count 8 possibilities for the first letter. Assuming you haven’t eliminated enough
of them in earlier guesses, it’s a pure guessing game at that point unless you do what I did. In hard mode you are scrood.

Also two of the possible first letters are already in the word, which would nullify my strategy and can really fuck you over.

Well for what it’s worth I came up with that strategy on my own. But it’s not so unique or brilliant that thousands of other people couldn’t also
come up with it on their own.

Okay you must have multiple strategies then, because the one strategy that I recall you expounding on, and that would not have been optimal in this case, was a strategy about which you said something like "I didn't come up with that, I saw it elsewhere."
I don't keep up with the daily strategies.

So, my first guess ruled out nothing. My second guess ruled out two of the possibilities. Guess #3, where I still didn't have that down ruled out one more possibility. Then, I actually made the two guesses where the letter was already in the word.
One big thing is that I got hung up on the pronunciation, so the actual answer didn't even occur to me as a possibility.
