If you’re down to the final letter and there are fewer possibilities for the final letter than remaining guesses, then it would have been either unnecessary or a mistake to do what xyzzy did. But in James’ case, he had more possible letters than remaining guesses.

Once you have that puzzle down to just the first letter, I count 8 possibilities for the first letter. Assuming you haven’t eliminated enough of them in earlier guesses, it’s a pure guessing game at that point unless you do what I did. In hard mode you are scrood.
Also two of the possible first letters are already in the word, which would nullify my strategy and can really fuck you over.
