I have found-out that disposing of your old passport or passport card before you apply for a renewal throws you into a kind of bureaucratic cul-de-sac. My passport card disintegrated so I shredded and threw it out. Now that my I need to renew my
passport, f'sck that worthless card, I see that was a mistake.

    Essentially I get:

Where you issued a passport and/or a passport card?

    o Passport o Passport Card o Both

I select "Both" and the options for my card are:

    o I have it
o I have it, but it is mutilated
    o It was lost
    o It was stolen

If I say I have it, they want it back, but I don't. If I say it was lost or stolen, I have to go through the process of reporting a lost or stolen passport which will probably gum-up the works. Any suggestions?

    Facebook sucks.

I don’t know the answer but thanks for the heads up not to dispose of my
card if it gets rfscked up.

Unfortunately since Covid both my passport and my card have been safely preserved in a fireproof box. I’d love to put some wear and tear on them.

    Not helpful I know.

I’d be tempted to take the “if they have to ask they don’t know” route and
not admit to having a card. If they pull you up on it you can say “damn,
well that was ten years ago and I forgot, I guess it’s lost”.

Of course that’s easy for me to tell you. Despite the temptation if it were me I’d probably call it lost and deal with the bureaucracy.

You could try going to the post office to do the renewal
process. Occasionally they'll have someone knowledgeable that
can help you with it. I had to keep trying different locations
until I found one who was savvy, but I found one.

    Yes, in multitudinous ways.

I got the passport card, and it is a good thing to have when you're in
Europe. You really need to carry your passport if you're out driving
in a car, due to the constant chance of "papers please" stops, but I
hate to carry it with me. Enter the passport card. I got stopped by
the Portuguese Garda (the PSP) at one of those roadblocks where they
check for your yellow vest (and extra glasses, which I didn't have but
they didn't check). I had my US drivers license, which I showed, but
they asked for the passport. I had my passport card and showed that. I
don't think that is supposed to be used, but they accepted it.

We're finally going back this year and I'll carry it again.
