How do you make money investing in cryptocurrency?

It doesn't make sense when "they" talk about all the computer connections that create "something" that can't be bought or sold.

Is this the biggest financial scheme since Mr. Ponzi ?

It's my understanding the guy who created this cryptocurrency has never been seen publicly.

Last night I saw an ad on tv for some new outfit that is asking you to invest your finances in this stuff just like it was an IRA or 401 retirement plan.

SO who is gonna get rich and who is going to get fleeced?

    It’s a pyramid scheme.

This video lays it out well. Don’t be put off by the length, the crypto
    part is at the beginning.

In addition, even if everything is aboveboard like it probably is with Bitcoin, the threat of neural net computing may change the entire equation. I am staying away, and using gold as my stable alternative value store.

Nice explanation. Shrugs off Bitcoin and the extensions that make it a
platform for future growth, but nicely states most of the problems.

In short, we just don't know enough what the ramifications of the need
for, and provision of, growing computer power will be. If these
technologies are going to be something to build on, they need to
determine the growth path of increasing storage, computing, and
consensus mediation. No one has stated those problems in any sort of a
fashion that could give comfort that there is a way forward. Any
attempts at doing that assume that there isn't 1) a paradigm change like
neural nets which would likely cause all bets to be off, or 2) intervention
of the superpowers and the effective elimination of competition for validation priority.

My employer spent a ton of resources trying to make blockchain a viable business and failed miserably. Not saying that means it’s impossible
because we are far from a monopoly on smarts and savvy but it wasn’t half assed by any means. The investment reached ten figures and 1500
employees. At one point the CEO said was the basis for future growth. But
it wasn’t really viable in real business. Microsoft and others tried too though I don’t know to what extent.

It wasn’t all bad news, at least for me. My team picked up an excellent programmer from the blockchain layoffs when they finally gave up.

Btw I should clarify that my poast here is about blockchain, the
technology, not crypto, which is a (actually the dominant) use case for it.
I was zeroing in on Connie’s assertion that technology improvements could make crypto viable someday.

Sounds right to me. Blockchain is definitely a technology, but it
seems like it doesn't scale anywhere like would be needed to be viable
in the near future for anything but simple cases. Bitcoin stores value
in a fashion that makes it unsuitable for everyday commerce -- attempts
to make it more have failed miserably.

Figuring out summary methods for certain criteria so that you don't
need to go back to byte 0 all the time would seem to be the most
promising thing -- see Segwit. But how do you get reference
implementations to support it in a timely fashion that allows rollout
for any common use? The problems are legion.

Some forks of Bitcoin attempted to do these things but couldn't get
validation priority so they failed and became minor crypto issues.
There are a lot of black holes you can invest in if you look.

Hard stuff. Even harder to do in an elegant and reliable fashion.
And then you have to get a herd of cats to buy into it.
