• Saturday Rivalry Week CFP Watch 11/25/23

From Michael Falkner@21:1/5 to All on Sat Nov 25 07:56:12 2023
Well, everything went as pretty much expected:

    (17) Iowa, (13) Oklahoma, (23), Tulane, (9) Missouri, (7) Texas, (11) Penn State, and (6) Oregon all won.

    Big Ten:

    (2) Ohio State - (3) Michigan (9 AM Pacific, FOX) and no need to go further as to those ramifications. Winner gets Iowa in the B10CG and an inside track to the CFP. Loser is probably out, unless the game is very close.

    Big XII:

    (20) Oklahoma State - BYU (12:30 PM, ABC) If Oklahoma State wins, they get Texas in the B12CG. If not, it's Oklahoma.

    ACC:

    (5) Florida State - Florida (4:30 PM, ESPN).
    Kentucky - (10) Louisville (9 AM, ABC).

ACC CG is set: (5) Florida State vs. (10) Louisville

Florida State may need two convincing wins with the new QB to make a case for the CFP. Two convincing wins and some chaos for Louisville???

    Pac-12:

    (15) Arizona-Arizona State (12:30 PM, ESPN)
    (4) Washington-Washington State (1 PM, FOX)

Probably nothing now for Arizona to do, probably the Holiday Bowl for them.

Pac12CG is set: (4) Washington vs. (6) Oregon, in probably a CFP "Quarterfinal". Winner is almost-certainly in.

    SEC:

CG is set and has been a couple weeks now: (1) Georgia vs. (8) Alabama

    (1) Georgia - Georgia Tech (4:30 PM, ABC)
    (8) Alabama - Auburn (12:30 PM, CBS)

    ************************

    American Athletic:

    (23) Tulane will host the game with their win yesterday and being the only ranked team this week involved.

SMU - Navy (9:00 AM, ESPN 2) SMU wins, they go to Tulane. If not, the computers will determine which of SMU and Texas-San Antonio plays Tulane.

Tulane wins that game, they probably get in the New Year's Six.

    Conference USA:

New Mexico State goes to (25) Liberty for their championship game. Liberty must beat them and UTEP this week (and get some help in the American Athletic title game, the CFP requires that the Go5 rep be one of the champions) to go to the CFP Slough-Off.

    Mid-American:

Miami (OH) faces Toledo in Detroit in the Championship Game next week.

    Sun Belt:

    Troy will host.

James Madison - Coastal Carolina (12:30 PM, ESPN 2)
Georgia Southern - Appalachian State (12:30 PM, ESPN U)

Coastal Carolina wins, they go to Troy (and would've anyway, with that win). Appalachian State must win and Coastal lose to get the berth themselves.

    Mountain West:

UNLV - San Jose State (12 PM, no national TV)

Kinda sucks for the Mountain West, because this game is all to play for.

If UNLV wins, they host Boise State in the Mountain West championship game.

If San Jose State wins, not only do the computers then decide who hosts the Mountain West title game, they decide who plays in it, as there is nothing, tiebreaker-wise, to set apart UNLV, San Jose State, and Boise State in any respect otherwise!

I guess the other one didn't post. Try this one at 4 Pacific.

    B10CG: Michigan vs. Iowa

    Big XII:

Oklahoma State 27 - BYU 24 late in the 4th. If Oklahoma State wins, they face Texas. If BYU can get the comeback, Oklahoma faces Texas.

    ACC:

    (5) Florida State - Florida (4:30 PM, ESPN).
    Kentucky - (10) Louisville (9 AM, ABC).

Kentucky upsets Louisville 38-31 in a major problem for Florida State!!!

    Florida State-Florida about to kick.

ACC CG is set: (5) Florida State vs. (10) Louisville

    Pac-12:

    (15) Arizona-Arizona State (12:30 PM, ESPN)

Probably nothing now for Arizona to do, probably the Holiday Bowl for them.

So Arizona hung 59 on Arizona State to probably get the Pac-12's 3rd bowl.

    (4) Washington-Washington State (1 PM, FOX)

Washington State hanging tough. 21-14 Washington leads about 6 1/2 to go in the fourth.

Pac12CG is set: (4) Washington vs. (6) Oregon, in probably a CFP "Quarterfinal". Winner is almost-certainly in.

I'd almost have to think that's in pen now (if Washington wins).

    SEC:

CG is set and has been a couple weeks now: (1) Georgia vs. (8) Alabama

    (1) Georgia - Georgia Tech (4:30 PM, ABC)
    (8) Alabama - Auburn (12:30 PM, CBS)

FOURTH AND GOAL FROM THE THIRTY-ONE and a play that will go down in Iron Bowl history like the Kick Six!!!

Alabama survives with a last-gasp touchdown to beat Auburn 27-24.

    Georgia-Georgia Tech about to kick.

    ----------

So about the only big news in the Power 5 is Louisville falls, and that makes Florida State's position even more precarious!

    American Athletic:

    (23) Tulane will host the game with their win yesterday and being the only ranked team this week involved.

SMU left no doubt. 59-14 over Navy.

American Athletic CG: SMU at (23) Tulane. Tulane is the Go5 rep, all but certainly, with a win.

    Conference USA:

New Mexico State goes to (25) Liberty for their championship game. Liberty must beat them and UTEP this week (and get some help in the American Athletic title game, the CFP requires that the Go5 rep be one of the champions) to go to the CFP Slough-Off.

Liberty wins over UTEP 42-28 -- one more win Friday night, and they wait until Saturday to see if SMU can upend Tulane.

    Mid-American:

Miami (OH) faces Toledo in Detroit in the Championship Game next week.

    Sun Belt:

    Troy will host.

James Madison - Coastal Carolina (12:30 PM, ESPN 2)
Georgia Southern - Appalachian State (12:30 PM, ESPN U)

    SBCG: Appalachian State at Troy

James Madison put Coastal Carolina to bed 56-14.
App State won the berth by beating Georgia Southern 55-24.

    Mountain West:

UNLV - San Jose State (12 PM, no national TV)

    Mountain West CG:

    ...

Your guess is as good as mine!

The computers will have to decide it. San Jose State upset UNLV in Vegas 37-31, and now a computer composite will not only have to determine who hosts the Mountain West Championship Game, but which two teams play in it, because Boise State and UNLV didn'
t play, and San Jose State split the pair.

And just as I finish typing that:

BYU squares with Oklahoma State and they're heading to overtime.

Washington State squares with Washington with about six minutes left.

And Washington beats Washington State to seal the (almost definite) CFP "Quarterfinal" spot when they play Oregon next week.

Oklahoma State survives BYU, and that is the entire Power Five setup:

    Big Ten: Iowa-Michigan
    Big XII: Oklahoma State-Texas
    ACC: Florida State-Louisville
    Pac-12: Washington-Oregon
    SEC: Alabama-Georgia.

Georgia and Florida State get tested, but both win.
