There will always be a Pacific conference. A wrestling conference, mind you (technically, schools like UC-Davis and Cal Poly are members)...

If you ask me, what the move should be, once the rest of the shoes (Arizona, Arizona State, Utah) decide whether to drop or not, is to both merge with the Mountain West and take in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation sports, and call the whole thing
    the Mountain Pacific Conference.
Among other things, this gives Stanford an excuse to bring back the annual Elway Bowl against San Jose State.

    Pacific Division:
    Cal
    Fresno State
    Hawaii
    Oregon State
    San Diego State
    San Jose State
    Stanford
    Washington State

    Mountain Division:
    Air Force
    Boise State
    Colorado State
    Nevada
    New Mexico
    UNLV
    Utah State
    Wyoming

Added bonus: in the years where you have an away game at Hawaii, you have an excuse to play 13 regular season games and/or a Week 0 game, at least until it gets to the point where they start the entire season a week earlier than they do now, if for no
other reason than to allow for 4-team conference football tournaments.

Just make sure the cadets aren't in uniform when Air Force has an away game at Cal.

Probably exactly what's gonna happen, and that'll be the first "bridge conference" between FBS-II and FCS.

Send the cadets armed in BDU's.

    Pac-4 now.

Arizona and Arizona State may be the only pair of "University of X" and "X State University" schools that like to act as a team. In the rest of the west, University of X is always leaving X State University behind.

Yes, because Louisiana is so much more of an athletic powerhouse than Louisiana State...

5 -- the Big XII only took ASU for now.

Same BOR for the schools. And sounds like the had to force ASU’s president to recognize the PAC wasn’t surviving.

Don’t know where your news came from, but the BigXII had been reported to have already voted on Arizona the day before. Obviously it’s official now though. Arizona was always the preferred member to them because of BB.

Virginia and Virginia Tech acted in concert during the 2005 ACC expansion

To be fair to me, I did say "rest of the west". Don't think Louisiana counts as the west.

However, with the Washington and Oregon schools splitting, the pairs that are now aligned in the same conference:
    Arizona / Arizona State
    UNC / N.C. State
    Kansas / Kansas State
    Michigan / Michigan State
    Texas / Texas A&M (reluctantly for A&M)
    Virginia / Virginia Tech
    Indiana / Purdue
