Ryan Lochte won't be making any pool appearances anytime soon,
as the U.S. Olympic Committee has decided to suspend the 12-time
Olympic medalist for 10 months after he exaggerated about being
robbed during the Olympics, according to USA Today Sports.
The punishment includes a suspension from the International
Olympic Committee and USA Swimming-sponsored meets. Lochte will
also be banned from the 2017 world swimming championships in
July.
Lochte's ban is four months longer than the penalty dealt out to
Michael Phelps following his second DUI arrest in 2014.
During last month's Rio Games, Lochte claimed he and three other
American swimmers were robbed at gunpoint in the early morning
of Aug. 14, shortly after the swimming events concluded. After
security footage revealed a much different story, Lochte
admitted to being intoxicated from a night of partying and said
he “over-exaggerated that story” and posted an apology on social
media.
USOC sources told TMZ Sports the severity of Lochte's punishment
was debated in comparison to Phelps.
Lochte told Omnisport before the Games he was planning to take
time away from swimming before embarking on training for the
Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Lochte will first be eligible to return
from his suspension June 30, 2017.
The other three swimmers involved in the Rio incident — Gunnar
Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen — were also suspended, but
for less time, per the reports.
A formal announcement from the USOC is expected Thursday.
