Chelsea now up 2-0, with a heavily VAR-influenced goal. First to assign the penalty (correct decision), then to have the penalty retaken for encroachment (hmmm...)

Admittedly Bruges are no great shakes and did very well to get this far.
But Benfica have been impressive. Still unbeaten in this year's CL
(including 2 rounds of qualification before the group stage) - their
record is 10 wins and two draws. Good work for any team, but
considering they sold players for (reportedly) 260,000,000 Euros
(including Fernandez in Jan) and bought for only 88 Million (two
expensive acquisitions in Jan) they are clearly doing something right.
Only one defeat (to Braga) in the league as well.

If I were into betting, I think I would put some money on them as dark
horses to win the whole thing.

Both sides encroached -- retake either way. Just happened to be a retake of a miss.

Strangely enough, I actually thought the penalty decision was a bit
harsh... for me Wolf was too close to Chilwell when the ball was
kicked. He couldn't do much about it. <shrugs>

The encroachment thing was fine, if the refs do it every time! The
problem is they don't and it's a mess of a rule as Chelsea players
encroached too. These 're-take' decisions are very inconsistent and
seem subjective to the specific referee.

That's the rule. But how often do we see it applied? Maybe UEFA refs
are more tougher on applying it. (?) If the encroachment rule was
enforced more often I reckon we'd see tons of re-taken penalties...

I think it was a VAR call because, when VAR got another look at it, it does kind of appear he's trying to use the arm outside his body-frame to block the ball -- which see Frings USA vs. Germany WC QF.

It's a mess of a rule because, when both teams infringe, it's a retake _regardless_.

Guttmann specified a century. The curse will expire in 2062.
