Maybe he is, or maybe he isn't. Hard to tell. Anyway, rest in peace.
(Doesn't really matter. He's so great and wonderful in himself that there's not much point comparing him to other greats. From the little I've seen of him.)

Not sure if I’m in the minority on rss but I’m not old enough to have seen Pele play during his career.

    His achievements are beyond doubt.

One thing that doesn’t seem to get mentioned so much but it strikes me he along with Eusebio must have been two of the earliest black players to play leading roles for successful sides at World Cups?

    RIP

By most accounts of people who knew and met him, he was a very nice person. But he did say a lot of silly things, and indulged in a lot of self-promotion. But nobody is perfect.

He was the undoubted face of the game until the turn of the millennium (far more than Maradona in terms of global appeal), but that baton has now been picked up by Messi.

    RIP.

Well all credit to Jose Leandro Andrade for being the first, but the post did say "**two of the earliest** black players to play leading roles for successful sides at World Cups". Pele and Eusebio would surely meet the above definition, not to mention
that their achievements would have been more influential due to the simple accident of World Cup matches reaching a global television audience by the time they played.

Leonidas da Silva was another. And of course many of Pele's colleagues
on the 1958 team, and several members of the 1950 Brazilian team.

Just caught the end of a Pelé memorial on TRT and apparently Pelé played in goal four times and didn’t end up on the losing side once! Was there no end to the man’s talents?

    A few comments on Pele.

One quibble: everyone says that he won three World Cups. He played
on three cup-winning sides, but in 1962 I believe he played in only
1.5 first round matches and that was it. It might even have been .5
first round matches. He tore a muscle and they won without him thanks
    largely to Garrincha.

The Brazilian teams of 1950 and 1954--which did not win--had black
stars, and Didi and Djalma Santos were stars of the 1958 and 1962
    winners.

As for his play: there are some fantastic highlight videos of him
on youtube which I recommend. I don't think any other player
sustained a comparable performance level over such a long time.
Watching those videos, I don't think there has ever been a more
ambidextrous player. He could dribble through two defenders with his
right foot and then hit an absolutely spectacular shot with his left
foot. I've seen Ronaldo (Cristiano) and Diego Forlan hit remarkable
shots with their left feet but not as many.

Watching highlights from 1970--and I own all their 1970
games--what's amazing is how Pele, Gerson, and all the others are
constantly looking for a killer pass to put someone through. Many of
them don't make it, but they don't care, and when one
does---GOOOOOOOL!!! More recent Brazilian teams waste a lot more
time. I don't think any subsequent team can match Rivelino, Tostao,
Pele and Jairzhino as a forward line.

The first time I saw him play a full game as it happened was his
Cosmos debut. He headed a tremendous goal.

RIP--I don't thnk we can produce a player like him any more. He
was taught by his father whose pro career was cut short by injury, and
his father made him learn everything.

He was part of the squad, and 1.5 1st round matches was probably a quarter of the tournament. I think that's enough to have earned his medal.
