From Blueshirt@21:1/5 to All on Fri Dec 16 11:39:24 2022
Well, who would have guessed it... FIFA propose to go forward with
their 32 team Club World Cup for 2025. More teams = more games = more
    money.

It's a club tournament so with 32 teams taking part so I assume an
Italian club would be involved anyway...

I have a feeling that some European leagues will object to the
proposal... and they will continue with their steadfast principled
opposition until FIFA promise them the sun, moon and stars ... and very possibly a bag of cash!

Just don't call it a Superleague!

32 isn't a multiple of 6 though. Is it going to be 6 from each of South America and Europe and 5 each from the other continents, or what?

And if this is going to be every 4 years, why are they having one for 2022?

And why is the 2022 Club World Cup being played in 2023? Further evidence that playing the World Cup in Qatar in December was a bad idea?

I would expect FIFA to continue with their annual CWC tournament 'as
is' until they launch the expanded version.

FWIW, the 2021 FIFA World Club Cup was played in 2022.

Yeah that was weird too. The 2020 Club World Cup was postponed to 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. But since then, there doesn't seem to be much reason to be playing it in the following year.

I doubt it would be equal representation from each confederation.
Weird that they would not try 16 as a first step, though.

No details on format, but my guess would be that the winners and runners
up of the CL from the previous four years, or perhaps winners of the
EUropa league and CL, would get invited. With adjustments made for
double winners in some mysterious fashion.

Same thing for LIbertadores and possibly Sudamericana.

Then a smaller number of qualifiers from the minor confederations - last
    4 winners of their competition.

Add in one from Oceania, hosts, and some other fudge factor and you get
to 32. Pressure from big clubs might make it a straight knockout
    competition.

    8 Europe, 8 South American, 4 CAF, 4 AFC, 4 Concacaf, 1 host, 1 Oceania,
    2 extra special invites ?
