• Previous times two teams from same first round group made the SF

From MH@21:1/5 to All on Mon Dec 12 13:47:53 2022
1954 W. Germany and Hungary , and everyone knows what happened. 1
    win apiece

1962 Czechoslovakia and Brazil. Drew in group, Brazil won in the final

1982 Italy and Poland. Poland won the group (they drew), Italy won
    the SF

1994 Brazil and Sweden. Draw in group, Brazil won the SF.

2002 Brazil and Turkey. Brazil won both, albeit not easily

Weird that the last three times the two teams from the same group made
the SF they had to play each other again before the final. This really
should not happen in a proper bracket. I attribute the 2002 bracket to
wanting to keep Korea and Japan playing in their own country for as long
as possible. 1982 was just a bad system to start with, but they could
easily have made the winners of the Germany first round group play the
winners of the Italy one, and the Winners of the France group play the
Poland one, if they had though about it. 1994 I have no explanation.

2022. Croatia and Morocco can only meet each other in the final. Does
not seem all that likely, but you never know.

Hold on there, Austria and Uruguay, the other semifinalists, were also
    in the same group.

    1994 I have no explanation.

24 teams, some groups with three finalists so at least two of
the three are in the same part of final tree.

But in this case, Brazil and Sweden were in a group from where
only two teams qualified. Strange idea to put them in the same
    part.

But it can be arranged that it is the third placed and second placed
ones that end up in the same half of the bracket (or at least all but
one of the third placed ones. )

    Top Half

    Winner A
vs. third B or D or F or E (in that order of priority)

    Winner C vs. second D

    Winner E vs third F or D or B or C

    Second F vs. second B

    Bottom Half

    Winner B vs third C or A or E or F

    Winner D vs. second C

    Second C vs. Second A

    Winner F vs. third A or C or E or B

    Or something like that.

It was not just Brazil and Sweden. Germany and Spain were in the same
half of the draw. As were Netherlands and Saudi Arabia. And Nigeria and Bulgaria.

You missed the 2018 edition, which had the same outcome as this year's World Cup -
the two same-group semifinalists being eliminated.

    Ciao,
