• WC 2022 QF Day 1 CRO-BRA NED-ARG [R]

From Futbolmetrix@21:1/5 to All on Fri Dec 9 11:14:41 2022
Bleah, I missed the excitement of Brazil-Croatia, even though I can't say I am upset at the final result (sorry, Lleo and Jesus, congrats Vedran!)

    12' NED-ARG 0-0

Argentina mostly on the front foot, but not much has happened so far. Spaeking of hideous jerseys, NED looks more like Pistoiese than the mighty Oranje

Messi get some room to shoot from about 18 meters out, would not be exactly a "chance" for most players, but it's Messi...you never know. Way over the bar.

Pistoiese reply with a nice Memphis/Bergwijn combination, but the final shot is dragged wide from a very good position

I don't like the overall trend to solid colours that has gone on in the
past decade very much. White shorts, please !

This game, what I have seen of it so far, has been a bit dull. One of
those matches that might benefit from a couple of red cards to each
team. Given the teams involved that might even happen.

    Nahuel Molina, Argentina up 1-0.

I only managed to catch extra time streamed on my phone on the train home. Brazil undid a Maradonaesque moment of brilliance from Neymar by being too negative after taking the lead. Example: 5 minutes left. Brazil awarded a free kick close enough to the
Croatian goal to shoot or put in a high ball and instead they pass sideways, seemingly to run the clock down. Unacceptable, and it let Croatia back into the game.

Nice buildup play by Messi at the goal, and the defender's finish was also very good for a defender. Not much else to report in the first half. Holland seem a little out of their league. If this goes on like this the argies won't have too many problems
    reaching the semis.

I had a small vodka while watching it. Hope I didn't break any rules. ;)

Messi plays another beautiful through ball in midfield that sets up Argentina for a great 3v2, but DePaul (?) bungles the final pass. He then tries to take matters in his own hands, gets fouled on the edge of the box, and sails the resulting free kick
    just over the bar.

Yes, he should have gotten a yellow. But that's not something that can be reviewed based on the current VAR protocol.

Acuna earns a penalty, Messi this time doesn't waste it. 2-0

Then it's done the wrong way. Yellow and red cards should be the video ref's decision, as I said 10 years ago.

The ref seems to be a complete joke. Now he's given a free kick to the dutch for a perfectly valid tackle. The argentinian player couldn't believe it. And I have my doubts as to the penalty. I'll need to see it again after the match.

I don't think that was a penalty. I couldn't find anything relevant, if somebody has it I'd like to see it. What I did find was a slo-mo analysis that said the same, that it looks like there was no foul.

I wish you the same score than in 2018.

We won't repeat 3:0, I do hope we can challenge them like Brazil
and yes, I also wouldn't want them to win the cup because
of their behavior, feels like we have Atletico left in a draw :)

And it didn't look like the match was that dirty -- just looked like it was a stickler ref for enforcing the Laws.

Was Otamendi playing as a sweeper for Argentina?

I'm a bit disappointed about the Brazil-Croatia result; Brazil v Argentina in the semi-final would have been special. How do yous rate Luka Modric's performance. I didn't think he played that well. Is he just getting old and not as good as he used to be

Croatia vs netherlands would have satisfied my "new team to win the cup" criteria, but the matches yesterday had everything, so hard to complain.

I thought Modric played quite well yesterday and in this tournament in general, though the keeper and defence is what saved Croatia when it looked like Brasil were going to score in the 2nd half and seal the deal. Yet I have to say, honestly, I just
felt Croatia would tie it up. AS for the other game I thought the Dutch were finished at 2-0 down, kind of felt sorry for them, though everyone was feeling sorry for the Argies when the Dutch scored the second. Anyhow, great QF day, goals ,comebacks,
    bench clearing brawls etc

Not to mention things that have never happened before, Games spanning over two days, Wim Weghorst scoring goals, Messi not missing PKs...
Both teams will be tired for the the SF.

After yesterday I cant help but think today will be two clear wins by France and Portugal in the 90 mins

Lots of debate about the picture going around of Argentinian players taunting the dejected Dutch immediately after Lautaro's penalty.

My interpretation: if you wanted Argentina to win, then trash talking and taunting are just part of the sport, deal with it.
If you wanted Argentina to lose, disgusting unsportsmanlike cheats!

What was with the yellows and second yellows handed out very late
(according to the reports I read, which are rather unclear, either after
full time, during the pens, or after then pens (eg. to Dumfries and Lang) ?

But the Dutch also seemed to happily (angrily?) engage into the taunting
and trash talking game. For example, when Lautaro MartĂnez began his walk from the middle of the field to the box to take the last penalty, three
Dutch players approached him to try to verbally psyche him out. The linesman had to intervene to separate them. I've never seen this before, which is
quite different to the usual keeper-shooter antics.

Of course, it takes two to tango :-)

All true. Still, one can make the case that trash talking and mind games are part of the game and a legitimate strategy, but the moment the final whistle goes off, you put all that aside and shake hands with your opponent. Ah well...

Apparently not, according to Wikipedia. I was wondering because the TV broadcast had Argentina as playing a 3-5-2 formation, and I thought it was unusual to play that formation without a sweeper. But Wikipedia seem to think it was a 5-3-2 formation with
2 wing backs. I checked the squad list for the positions of the wing backs and 1 is a defender and 1 is a midfielder. A wing back is a defender isn't it? If 1 of the "wing backs" was playing as a midfielder, then surely it was 4-4-2?

Are flat back 3s actually more common than I think anyway? I think my tactical knowledge needs updating.

Indeed, and to that I say "point conceded". Some of the post-match antics could and probably should have been avoided. But that picture was taken
about what, one or two seconds after the shootout was over, on a highly charged World Cup quarterfinal? Heads were still too hot at that moment,
    I suppose.

Fair enough. I don't have a particular beef about what Argentina did. And, as I said, my impression is that the harshest critics are those who didn't like Argentina in the first place.
