• WC 2022 Day 17 MOR-ESP POR-SUI

From Futbolmetrix@21:1/5 to All on Tue Dec 6 07:23:11 2022
20 minutes in, still 0-0 between Morocco and Spain.

The Spain away jersey is hideous. They look like Malaga. Deserved punishment for their biscotto against Japan.

Morocco taking the game to Spain much more than expected.

Or Man City. Or Lazio. Or Uruguay.

I agree, it looks nothing like what we’d expect Spain to wear.

Well we did have the exact same discussion last summer when Spain's ladies wore a similar jersey against Denmark at the Euros,
    just with dark blue shorts.

And they wore a similarly coloured jersey at Euro 2012 in the group game against Croatia, and they went on to win that one.

But yeah, fully agreed on that although I'm not terribly surprised as it's their same old tired 1000-passes-to-a-shot-off-target we already got to see so often.
Still, I feel Spain will somehow find a win here.

Madrid born Hakimi converts the last penalty to knock Spain out. All credit to the Moroccan keeper “Bono” for the saves he made.

Portugal has a super-talented team, and they can easily come out on top even without Ronaldo, but:
    a) This is a huge gamble by Fernando Santos. More from a PR point of view than about actual football, but still.
    b) Whether you like Cristiano or not, there's no question that he is a larger than life character. It would be a shame if his WC career ended on a whimper.

Say what you like about Switzerland, but unlike Spain they get away kits. All white with red trim. Finally a bit of decorum.

I don't know, but since their World Cup winning run of 2010, Spain has played 11 WC games and won three of them: against Australia (when both sides were already eliminated), Iran and Costa Rica.

It's as if the 2008-2012 period was the exception and we're seeing again the Spain of yore. Good teams, good players, devastating runs in the qualifying rounds and bleak final stages. Credit be given to them, though, for making
    Euro 2020 semifinals.

Goncalo Ramos with the first hattrick of the World Cup. 5-1

Cristiano smiling on the bench, but you know that deep down he is fuming...

Not a single sub yet. He must be seething!!

He's on, and graciously accepted the captain's armband.

What are the odds on him scoring a last-minute penalty and celebrating as if he'd won the match by himself?

    Ronaldo benched.

It took a brave man to drop Ronaldo.

Looking at tonight’s performance, it will take an even braver man to pick him for the first XI again.

I don't know who this guy is, but he is streaming live from

I have no idea why would someone watch this and why I'm even writing this.

Anyway, there was a narrative "if we beat Swiss, we'll surely beat
    Portugal in R16",
do I even have to say where did that come from...

I've got to say that's a really tasty quarterfinal line-up.
Perhaps that's where this World Cup becomes indeed memorable.

There is also no question that he's a complete narcissist.

It would be a shame if his WC career ended on a whimper.

Not for me. In fact, I would enjoy it very much, seeing his insatiable ego being deprived of any further fuel.

This is the World Cup that skill forgot. I mean come on, they cant even take penals anymore, they gonna forget how to take corner kicks next?

I suppose from a German perspective, Spain going out is justice for them purposely losing losing to Japan. Though I get it avoiding Brasil for the easy sure thing win vs Morocco. I am probably more upset with Germany for not letting Costa Rica win and
advance, , very unconcacafish of them.

The QFs do actually look interesting and for those of us wanting to see an "new" team win the WC, it is certainly quite possible. Portugal have the new Ronaldo and the old one now, how can they not win it all with two Ronaldos?

    Croatia v Brazil
Everyone thinks this will be an easy win for Brazil. First of all, after the QF stage, you never get any big blowout scores, Brasil knows that, secondly, I am not that impressed by Brasil yet and thirdly they 'threw" the game v Cameroon, you cant do
that, karma does not allow it. I mean OK, Brasil probably will win, but it could be tough, even if the Croatian team is oldish and had to play a long game yesterday. But yes, it should be interesting and I think close.

    The Netherlands v Argentina
Again, these later round games are always close, the players are nervous, tired and taking a more cautious approach to the matches. Argentina are all about Messi and defence this time, I think the Dutch have a well rounded team, I think they win this in
    90 mins.

    Morocco v Portugal
Portugal have a bunch of good young players, even if they still have the 40year old Pepe playing, Morocco are a good team too, but I cant see anything but a Portugal win.

    England v France
On paper and based on the games played so far, it would be easy to pick France to win it all. Except that it is France and England will be hungry to win their first ever WC and they just might? If Mbappe is Mbapped up for the game, I think France win,
but if he is all Deschamped for this game, then it might be a long night.

    Ciao,
    Werner

Something is wrong here, region was saying our group was a joke.
This is Spain's 3rd consecutive knock out on PKs.

And fourth total at World Cups, a record.

Has the time come to transfer the cliché from England south towards the Iberian peninsula?

(haven't looked at the EURO total)

Damn. Just one surprise and it had to be this one.

I understand Spain created chances but failed to convert them, so it's the same old story. To win the World Cup you have to score goals. True, they got their only one with minimal scoring, but that doesn't work very often, as can be seen.
Anyway, if you can't score one in 120 minutes vs. Morocco, then cannot convert a single PK, really, you can't claim to be world best. That's it. Maybe next time.

That said, this moroccan team seems to be quite strong, let's see how they do vs. Portugal.

Spain dominated possession but didn't do much with it. Is that how it usually is with Spain?

Overall I thought it was an even game and a draw was a fair result.
