• WC2022 Day 12: CAN-MOR CRO-BEL CRC-GER JPN-ESP [R]

From Futbolmetrix@21:1/5 to All on Thu Dec 1 07:08:55 2022
Morocco with the early lead over Canada. I think we'll see further discussion about Borjan.

Belgium looking not as embarrassingly bad as they have been in the first two matches, at least going by the first few minutes.

The final day of this farcical World Cup and I am glad it is over! All the negative stories, all the lack of drinking, I mean come on, some American fan was arrested for wearing a Gay armband in the stadium.

Now Morocco up 2-0. Looks like Canada will finish in 32nd place?

Belgium already with two big chances. As a defender, there is nothing more terrifying in football than seeing Kevin De Bruyne running at you with open space.

And now Carrasco, after being guilty of missing one of Belgium's big chances, gives away a silly penalty.

Modric...VAR trying to ice him...looks similar to the Griezmann incident yesterday...no penalty, offside.

Looks like it. They have the exact same record as Qatar right now (3 losses,
    1 goal scored, 7 conceded).

Interestingly, they played each match with a different uniform. All-white vs Belgium, all-black vs Croatia, and now all-red vs. Morocco.

The penalty thing seems to have helped Croatia refocus. They have been better since that. Still 0-0.

    HT CRO-BEL 0-0

Belgium has had the better chances, but they are still mostly sitting back and trying to hit on the break, even though a draw knocks them out.

I have the feeling that first place in this group is not viewed as all that important: you are likely going to get either Germany or Spain.

Doesn't look good, we got away there, didn't show almost anything in the
attack against this "old and slow" Belgium defense, since he is already
there maybe Mandzukic can show them how to score vs big teams.

Still 0-0 in the 84th min, and from the play it appears that Croatia is the one that needs a goal, rather than vive versa. Super anemic from the Belgians.

Well, this feels undeserved, Dalic has insane amount of luck, just how
many times Lukaku could have scored.

It's a new match, but expectations for R16 are really low now.

Now they only need a few more goals and they can qualify ahead of Spain
    Only one goal, of course.

So if I’ve read the right if Spain finishes second they avoid Croatia in the second round and also Brazil in the quarter final? Instead they’d get Morocco and potentially Portugal?

    Only 1 goal and that's 6 points.
Maybe Spain calculated and it's backfiring.

Ticos now justifiably starting to throw men forward, leaving huge spaces at the back. One goal is not enough for Germany, though.

    Best CAF WC ever?

So far two CAF sides through to the second round, which matches 2014 when Algeria and Nigeria did the same. If either Cameroon or Ghana make it through this will be the best since 2014 in terms of sides in the second round (perhaps best ever, can’t
    check right now).

1982. None (both Algeria and Cameroon did well though)
1986 Only Morocco IIRC - they won their group
    1990 Cameroon
    1994 Nigeria
1998 Nigeria (Morocco kind of unlucky
    2002 Senegal
    2006 Ghana
    2010 Ghana
    2014 Nigeria and Algeria
    2018 Three third places, 2 4ths

Two would equal the best ever, 3 would exceed it.

What the heck. Who would have seen it coming. But then it does make sense, to finish second in the group to avoid Brazil they needed to get beaten. It could have backfired if CRC had won, but that was extremely unlikely and didn't happen in the end. So
it's a good chance this is actually what Spain wanted.

Anyway, so Japan wins the group and Germany are out, and Morocco wins theirs and Belgium are out. Truly a World Cup of surprises.

If Brazil win their group, which they should, then both Spain and Brazil have relatively easy paths to the semis.

They were attacking, but not exactly desperate.

    FT: JPN - ESP 2-1

Both go through, Spain avoids the Brazil side of the draw.

So Japan beat Germany AND Spain! (and lost against Costa Rica!). Is Binder projecting Japan to win the World Cup now?

What changed for Japan at half-time? Spain looked totally dominant in the 1st half! They looked about 3 goals better than Japan! In the 2nd half it was like it was a completely different team that was playing against Spain. That match certainly fitted
the definition of the cliche a game of 2 halves!
