  • Regional size of soccer players

    It occurred to me over the last three days, not for the first time,
    that while soccer players in most countries tend to be of medium size
    and build or even smaller, there are two regions of the world where
    they tend to be much bigger. Anyone care to identify those regions?

    West Africa and northern Europe (especially NL and Scandinavia) would be
    my guesses as to the sources of the biggest players.

    West Africa, definitely--and what makes them so fascinating to watch
    is that they combine size with remarkable ball control, partly by
    keeping those big bodies between the opponent and the ball. My other
    pick is Eastern Europe. Not Croatia, no, but Poland has a large team
    and has in the past, and so has the Czech Republic in recent years at
    least.
