I have never supported Brazil before, but this particular team (with the exception of Neymar), I find quite likable. Maybe it's because I adore LFC's Brazilian contingent, especially Alisson. I wouldn't mind at all if they won it this time around.

I disliked Neymar for a long time, for the same reasons as everyone else: attention seeker, shithousery, show-boating, etc. But one thing Neymar is not (as far as I can see), which I am realizing that Ronaldo is, is a nasty and vindictive person.

It doesn't get any more schadenfreude than this, so it probably won't
    happen:

exact repeat of Switzerland - Serbia in 2018, Xhaka or Shaqiri

    Guys, guys.

Too much negativity by far in this thread.

Putting all the politics and the admittedly awful timing to one side, we've waited four and a half years for this global festival of football.

This is not the time to take pleasure from another team or player's misfortune, it's a time to be grateful for the feast of football before us. It is a special time which unites not just football fans but more than half of the World's population.

So instead of channeling negative energy toward the 32 teams in this World Cup, let's give them some positive energy. Here's looking forward to this World Cup producing the next Diego Maradona, Gary Lineker, Roger Milla, Jurgen Klinsmann, Romario, Hristo
Stoichkov, Ilhan Mansiz, James Rodriguez, Antoine Griezmann or Denis Cheryshev.

Here's looking forward to this World Cup giving us the next Cameroon 1990, Bulgaria 1994, Brazil 1994, France 1998, Turkey 2002, Italy 2006, Uruguay 2010, Colombia 2014, Germany 2014, Croatia 2018 or Belgium 2018.

Here's looking forward to this World Cup giving us the next Cameroon v Argentina 1990, West Germany v Holland 1990, Costa Rica v Scotland 1990, England v Cameroon 1990, England v West Germany 1990, Romania v Argentina 1994, Nigeria v Italy 1994,
    Bulgaria v Germany 1994, Morocco v Norway 1998, Argentina v England 1998, Brazil v Denmark 1998, Netherlands v Argentina 1998, Brazil v Turkey 2002, Senegal v France 2002, Senegal v Uruguay 2002, South Korea v Italy 2002, Senegal v Turkey 2002, Brazil v
    England 2002, Argentina v Mexico 2006, France v Spain 2006, England v Portugal 2006, Italy v Germany 2006, or Uruguay v Ghana 2010.

Mubarak Kas Alealam! (Happy World Cup!)

US to lose to Wales, since they seem to be taking it for granted they
will win. At least some of their commentators etc. are.

England also to lose to Wales, but to squeak into the second round

Netherlands to go out in the first round having lost to Senegal and
    drawn their other two.

I for one think this will be an interesting Cup. And probably quite unique, it will be a long time before another arab country hosts it. (Possibly never, given what happens in the world these days.) In any case many of us won't live to see it even if it
    does happen again.
As I think I said before, I don't care much about the human rights hype, it's western-style propaganda exaggeration.

As for the Schadenfreude, mine already happend, as many of you will be aware. Italy out for a second time in a row. Gooood. The World Cup will be a better place without them.
So I'll remain in positive mood and hope Spain wins it again.

Agreed. Despite Qatar's abysmal human rights record, this one is a (very) slippery slope.

Seeing the bollocking that Russia has received on the international stage, where was the similar reaction when the US/UK and several others did pretty much the exact same thing in Iraq? I'd leave this one alone.

Yes, that's a shame. Especially that it was announced so late. A lot of fans went there without expecting this. They really should sue FIFA for it.

Another point of interest, for me at least, is seeing how the video ref will perform. They've had 4 years now, they cannot claim lack of experience any more. So it's about time we see some impressive results. I'm going to watch hopefully all games from
the QFs onwards, I'm really curious how it will look like.

It’s a good question. Unless Qatar’s next trick is to buy the English Premier League and transfer all the clubs to Qatar it clearly seems too many stadia for such a small area.
