• Bahrain - Canada WC warm up [R]

From MH@21:1/5 to All on Fri Nov 11 12:01:44 2022
I watched this this morning. Pretty poor game (hot, and terrible
pitch). Canada had just had a camp for out of season players (plus
Liam Fraser). End result was 2-2 which was fair enough. Bahrain
actually looked a bit better, but Canada had a goal disallowed for
offside that might have been OK (no VAR and not good angle), and a
    plausible penalty appeal.

In terms of preparation for the WC the good news was Osorio, Laryea,
Kone and Johnston got through ninety minutes and looked OK. Plus St.
Clair played 90 minutes, and was fine, which is reassuring given that
Crepeau is out with a broken leg and St. Clair now becomes our # 2 GK.

Other possible good news is that red card magnet Doneil Henry got
injured before the game, and with any luck will not be in te final squad.

    Squad for this camp was:

Dayne St. Clair - played 90 minutes, shaky at times but good saves

James Pantemis - did not play. Now our No. 3, so will go to Qatar

Thomas Hasal - will not go to Qatar unless an injury arises

Doneil Henry - injured before game. Not sure how severe

Richie Laryea - played ca. 80 minutes as RWB then LWB. OK going forward

Alistair Johnston - Solid enough as usual.

Kamal Miller - OK, but tweaked something and now possibly a doubt.

Zachary Brault-Guillard - got some minutes as sub, and did well enough

Raheem Edwards - started at LWB, saw a lot of the ball, did not use it
well. Likely on the outside lookin in when final squad is announced

Lukas MacNaughton -first cap as a sub for Miller. Did well

Joel Waterman - first cap and started. Did not look comfortable until
    the second half.

Samuel Piette - Busy in midfield but too slow. Captain on the day. I am
not a fan but Herdman seems to be. Probably in the final squad

Jonathan Osorio - has played very little lately but had a decent 90 minutes

Mark-Anthony Kaye - also played very little of late, and it showed. On
this form he has no business in the team, but Herdman is loyal

Liam Fraser - got some minutes near the end and his passing was very good.

Ismaël Koné - this guy has come on in leaps and bounds. Very solid box
to box midfielder, who might even be a starter.

Mathieu Choinière - not subbed in so probably surplus to requirements

Lucas Cavallini - use lumbering inept performance but did have a role in
the OG, and his effort earlier may actually have been onside

Jayden Nelson - very late sub, added some pace to the game

Jacob Shaffelburg - looked great in a brief cameo

Ayo Akinola - has never really recovered from a serious gold cup injury.
Did himself no favours in a sub appearance.

I would say the definites for the final squad from the above list would be:

St. Clair, Pantemis, Miller, Johnston, Osorio, Koné, Laryea

Likely: Piette and Kaye, probably Cavalini as well

    So who else is in contention (Europe Based);

Alphonso Davies (Bayern) - Definite if injury is OK, as we are being told Jonathan David (Lille) - Definite
Milan Borjan (REd Star) - Definite
    Stephen Eustaquio (Porto) - Definite
    Tajon Buchanan (Bruges) - Definite
    Steven Vitoria (Chaves) - Definite
    Samuel Adekugbe (Hatayspor) - Definite
    Junior Hoilett (Reading) - Definite

Atiba Hutchinson (Besiktas) Probable. Just back from injury
Cyle Larin (Bruges) - Probable, but has played very little

    Derek Cornelius (Panetolikos) possibe
David WOtherspoon (St. Johnstone) possible. Just back from injury
    Liam Miller (Basil) - possible
    Theo Corbeanu (Blackpool) -possible
    Ike Ugbo (Troyes) - possible
Theo Bair (St. Johnstone) - unlikely
Charles-Andreas Brym (FC Eindhoven) - possible
Harry Paton (ex. Ross Cty) - very unlikely
Ben Paton (Ross County) - very unlikely
    Jason Leutwiler (oldham) -very unlikely

Arfield (Rangers) retired - recallable in emergency I guess

WHO I would pick, assuming injuries resolve OK

    GK: Borjan, St. Clair, Pantemis
DF: Johnston, Miller, Vitoria, Cornelius, Adekugbe, Laryea,
    Brault-Guillard, McNaughton, Waterman
MF: Eustaquio, Koné, Osorio, Hutchinson, Fraser, Wotherspoon, Piette
MF-FW - Hoilett, Davies, Buchanan, Miller
    FW: David, Larin, Corbeanu, Ugbo,

Who I think Herdman will actually take:

Henry instead of McNaughton or Cornelius
Kaye instead of Fraser or Wotherspoon
Brym and Cavalini instead of Corbeanu and Miller

7 defenders is too few out of a a squad of 26 - you know there are going
to be yellows, reds and injuries.
Having said that, Davies can play LB, Buchanan RB, and Atiba has played
    at CB quite often.

Kaye instead of Fraser or Wotherspoon
Turns out all of them are going.

Brym and Cavalini instead of Corbeanu and Miller
Brym no, Cavallini yes. Liam Millar did make it. Corbeanu a little
    unlucky as well

The nucleus of players likely to see significant minutes would be:

Johnston, Vitoria, Miller as central defenders.
Laryea, Johnston, Adekugbe, as wing backs. Possibly Davies and Buchanan
there in some matches as well

Eustaquio, Hutchinson, Ikone, Osorio as mids, with Piette and Kaye as
    late subs fairly regularly

Davies, David, Hoilett, Larin, Buchanan in various combinations up front.

Pecking order in goal is Borjan, St. Clair, Pantemis

    Here is the Actual team:

    Canadian men’s team roster

Goalkeepers: Milan Borjan (Red Star Belgrade/Serbia), James Pantemis (CF Montreal), Dayne St. Clair (Minnesota United)

Defenders: Sam Adekugbe (Hatayspor/Turkey), Derek Cornelius (Vancouver Whitecaps – Panetolikos/Greece), Alistair Johnston (CF Montreal), Richie Laryea (Nottingham Forrest/England), Kamal Miller (CF Montreal), Steven Vitoria (Chaves/Portugal), Joel
    Waterman (CF Montreal)

Midfielders: Stephen Eustaquio (FC Porto/Portugal), Liam Fraser (Deinze/Belgium), Atiba Hutchinson (Besiktas/Turkey), Mark-Anthony Kaye (Toronto FC), Ismael Kone (CF Montreal), Jonathan Osorio (Toronto FC), Samuel Piette (CF Montreal), David Wotherspoon (
    St. Johnstone/Scotland)

Forwards: Tajon Buchanan (Club Brugge/Belgium), Lucas Cavallini (Vancouver Whitecaps), Jonathan David (Lille/France), Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich/Germany), Junior Hoillett (Reading/England), Cyle Larin (Beskitas/Turkey), Liam Miller (FC Basel/
    Switzerland), Ike Ugbo (Troyes/France)

Ok, so players who will start should be
Borjan as keeper is a given I think.
I really dont know who the chosen defenders are going to be, I dont really rate any of them.
Euastaqio is doing quite well for Porto, I want to say top scorer for them in the UCL? Davies probably plays as a midfielder, I think Hutchison still starts, though maybe not anymore? Buchanan, Laurin and David should start. The rest of the spots are up
    for grabs.

    Possible lineup

    Borjan

    Johnston, Vitoria, Miller

    Buchanan Kone Eustaquio Osorio Adekugbe

    David Davies

Maybe Hutchinson instead of one of Osorio or Kone, if Herdman is feeling sentimental

Subs likely to get time Hoilett, Larin, Laryea.

I expect the Japan friendly will give players like Larin and Laryea a
full 90 minutes, and Osorio and Hutchinson a decent run-out

    Canada 2 - Japan 1
Canada fell behind early ('9) and came back to win equalizing in the 1st and forcing a penalty in the 2nd half, BARELY converting... over all Canada was into the encounter - good flow to the game in oppressive heat, it must be said... the chances were
about even... even without Davies Canada were competent :))) Japan still trying to get their team formation figured out + their defensive assignment in and around the box seemed lacking?
