• WWC Qualifying Play-Offs (UEFA) (R)

From Werner Pichler@21:1/5 to All on Thu Oct 6 02:48:35 2022
Some of the most convoluted qualification procedure I've ever seen.

    1st Play-Off Round (2nd-placed teams ranked 4-9)
    (one leg, today)

    Portugal (7) v Belgium (5)
    Scotland (6) v Austria (4)
    Wales (8) v Bosnia-Herzegovina (9)

    2nd Play-Off Round (2nd-placed teams ranked 1-3 v winners 1st Play-Off Round) (one leg, next Tuesday)

    Portugal/Belgium v Iceland (2)
    Scotland/Austria v Ireland (3)
    Switzerland (1) v Wales/Bosnia-Herzegovina

Now the bizarre thing is that even winning both play-off rounds won't
guarantee you a trip to Australia/New Zealand next year. Because only the
two 'best' play-off winners (based on the same runner-up ranking as used
above) will qualify directly, while the third one continues on to the inter- confederation play-offs next February where they will have to face off
against the likes of Taiwan, Haiti, Paraguay, or Papua New Guinea.

    More spots to UEFA!

    Ciao,
    Werner

    2-1. A Belgian goal got VAR'ed away before Portugal's 89th-minute winner from a corner.

    Scotland (6) v Austria (4)

1-0 aet. Winner also from a corner. Really poor match, very disappointing.

    Wales (8) v Bosnia-Herzegovina (9)

1-0 aet. I honestly don't think for a second that either one will have a chance against Switzerland.

Switzerland and Ireland to the World Cup. Portugal go to a couple more play-offs.

    Ciao,

So, the 10 teams in the play-offs will be:

    Chinese Taipei
    Thailand
    Cameroon
    Senegal
    Haiti
    Panama
    Paraguay
    Chile
    Papua New Guinea
    Portugal

To be played in February 2023; 3 teams qualify for the World Cup.

I hope Papua New Guinea qualify. It's crazy that the Champions of Oceania don't qualify directly!

Who do yous think are the favourites to qualify? I think probably Chile, along with possibly Portugal and Paraguay.

Portugal walks over all these teams with at least a 4 goal margin. The other two spots are up for grabs.

It was a fair bit closer, only a last-minute penalty gave Portugal a 2-1 win over Cameroon.

The other two spots go to CONCACAF, whose teams got the better of South American ones - Chile was eliminated by
Haiti, and Paraguay by Panama. I would have guessed that the Caribbean and Central American nations might have
profited from US women's soccer programs, but at least in the case of Haiti it looks more as if their success is due
to their connections to the French League.
