• European Women's football season start

From Mark@21:1/5 to All on Tue Sep 13 04:37:28 2022
If Binder can have a post about the start of the men's season, I can have one about the start of the women's season.

Lyon are top of the table after 1 game. Montpellier are joint 2nd. PSG are only joint 5th, out of 12. Oh and Sara Dabritz scored on what was presumably her debut for Lyon.

The Frauen Bundesliga starts this weekend. The 'tie of the round' is probably Eintracht Frankfurt v Bayern Munchen.

PSG, Lyon and Montpellier are the only teams in France that won both their 1st 2 games.

Eintracht Frankfurt v Bayern Munchen was a 0-0 draw. Wolfsburg won 4-0 and are top after 1 game.

I didn't know until a few days ago that there had been games played in the DFB Pokal. All the top teams comfortably through except Turbine Potsdam, who drew 4-4 with Viktoria Berlin and needed a penalty shoot-out to go through. Turbine Potsdam also only
drew their 1st League match, 1-1 away against Werder Bremen, so not a good start to the season for Turbine Potsdam.

In Italy, Juve was held to a 3-3 draw by Inter (Girelli put Juve ahead in the 90th minutes, Inter equalized in the 93rd), then went on to beat Roma 1-0 with a team missing all of its regular central defenders. After three rounds, Fiorentina and Samp lead
the table with 9 points, followed by Juve and Inter with 7. Milan, who lost its two tough opening matches to Fiorentina and Roma is on 3 points.

Today Round 2 of the Champions League qualifying round kicks off. Some interesting matchups, including PSG-Hacken, Koge-Juventus, Real Sociedad-Bayern and Arsenal-Ajax. Sparta Praha-Roma is maybe not as high profile, but will be critical for determining
    future CL slots.

St. Pölten made it through thanks to Mateja Zver's sweet 118th-minute volley. They won't have a snowball's chance in hell in
the group stage (nevertheless, it's the second time they reach the last 16 in Europe), but it's still quite the important step for
the development of our women's league .

OTOH not the best evening for KuPS, their men's team also all but threw away their chances for the Finnish title today.

No surprises so far in the other matches. Zürich, Rosengård, PSG, Arsenal, Real Madrid all won to qualify.

Who are the favourites for the Champions League? Lyon, PSG, Barcelona, Bayern Munchen, and Wolfsburg?

Meanwhile, in the domestic Leagues, Lyon won away against Montpellier 3-1 and Lyon and PSG are now the only teams in the French League that have won all their matches. Wolfsburg won away against Hoffenheim (2-1 I think), and we have a top of the table
clash this weekend: Wolfsburg v Bayer Leverkusen; with Bayern Munchen waiting to take over 2nd place from whoever loses that match. Turbine Potsdam lost 3-0 at home, I think it was against MSV Duisburg, in their 2nd League match. So a bad start to the
    season for us.

A comprehensive win for Roma, and if I understand correctly, one with massive consequences for the UEFA coefficients and the allocation of teams in future editions of the UWCL (Italy makes it into the top 6 and gets three teams in the CL next year?)

It's the influence of TV (TV stations dictating kick-off times for instance) and money that I don't like. Eg the way the big clubs have abused their financial muscle to gain unfair advantages in the Champions League. The inequalities are just a symptom
of that; it's not the inequalities in themselves that bother me.

It might be just that I don't know enough about the financial side of football, or about women's football, to be aware of it, but as far as I'm aware the inequalities in women's football have little, if anything, to do with money.

Of course it has everything to do with money. The big (men's) clubs realized that they can make a wee bit of money on the side with the women's game. All they needed was to allocate a small fraction of their budget to the women's team to create domestic
    superteams.

Didn't watch it, but Lyon did have a couple of notable absences (Mbock, Marozsan, Däbritz, Hegerberg, Macario,...).

Nice to see that Zinsberger and Wienroither by all accounts had very good performances, following our World Cup
qualifying disappointment. Beth Mead apparently back to her Euro-winning best, too.

Lyon had 9 players injured or ill... and played very very
badly. Arsenal scored almost all their oportunities while Lyon
had only 2 or 3 with wery weak shoots.

Maybe a too large score but totally deserved victory for a
    strong Arsenal.

But, if Lyon plays Juventus like they played Arsenal, Juventus
    will easily win.

Meanwhile, in the domestic Leagues, Wolfsburg and Bayern seem to be becoming even more dominant. Hoffenheim 0 Bayern 4, and Wolfsburg 5 Eintracht Frankfurt 0 at the weekend! Bayern overtake Eintracht Frankfurt and move up to 2nd. Turbine Potsdam are
bottom of the table with 1 point. They're not going to get relegated are they?

And Lyon and PSG are as dominant as they already were in France. They're playing each other this weekend.
