• 2022 Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana (R)

From Mark@21:1/5 to All on Mon Sep 12 03:18:10 2022
Why has there been no news of these on the World wide web? I've had to look at Wikipedia to find out the results! And I haven't seen any sign of any match reports!

In the Copa Libertadores, it looked as if it might be another Palmeiras-Flamengo final. Palmeiras were knocked out in the semi-final though. It is another all-Brazilian final. Flamengo play Athletico Paranaense in the final.

In the Copa Sudamericana, Sao Paulo, my 15th favourite football club, play Independiente del Valle in the Final.

Because the WWW is euro centric, I doubt that people in S America even know that the Copa Liberatodres is on right now!

There is news all over the WWW. Try ESPNFC for example where you can
    find results and match reports.

If you mean this newsgroup in particular, maybe Jesus and Lleo just
happen to be busy and not able to write their usual comments.

Most of us have no access to watch those matches. If you do, why not
    post reports yourself.

Indeed, I didn't have time even to watch the semifinals' second legs.

If it were a two-game final as it used to be, Flamengo would be easy favorites. But it's a single game in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Anything can happen.

In the Copa Sudamericana, Sao Paulo, my 15th favourite football club, play Independiente del Valle in the Final.

This one will be in Córdoba, Argentina. This actually is better for São Paulo, who won't have to play in the altitude.

    Tchau!

It seemed that the Brazilian clubs (about half a dozen of them ?) who
made the knockout stage only lost to other Brazilian clubs.
Is the Brasilerão distancing itself from its competitors.

I have a postdoc from Curitiba, though she is not a football fan. Just
looked up some things on the teams in that city, and surprisingly
Coritiba have been far more successful in the state league than Atletico Paranaense.

I was also surprised to find out that the city is at 935 m above sea
level, and that the Iguazu flows inland from there.

Actually Fortaleza lost to Estudiantes de La Plata in the second round,
but the rest is as you say.

Is the Brasilerão distancing itself from its competitors.

It is a bigger and richer league, and the expansion of 2017 (when Brasil
got 8 berths) has only helped Brasil strengthen its grasp on the competition. The last two seasons have seen this trend growing more acute, with Brazilian clubs winning 15 out of 18 knockout rounds against foreign opposition (for a comparison, the record from 2017 to 2020 is 18-13).

Argentina has also benefitted from the expansion, but they have been closer
to Brasil than they are now. In the 2017-2020 period the head-to-head between Brazilian and Argentinian teams in the knockout rounds reads 9-8 to Argentina. In 2021-2022 it is 7-1 to Brasil...

In all this, the rest of South America barely registers. Teams from Ecuador
and Paraguay show up somewhat more often in the knockout rounds (though only Barcelona de Guayaquil have broken the Big Two's stronghold in the semis). Uruguayans and Chileans less so, but they are here and there. And then, the Colombia-Bolivia-Peru-Venezuela block add up a grand total of 4 appearances out
of 96 second round berths since 2017, and in two of these ties we had scores such as 8-0 and 7-1.

Coritiba built their advantage from the 50's to the 70's. Before and since,
the two have been more or less even. If you take the last 50 seasons, it's only 18-15 to them. They do have the edge too in head-to-head (148-123, with 117 ties, if I looked up correctly). For a little factoid on them, they are also the only team to have ever won the Brasileirão with a negative goal difference.

I was also surprised to find out that the city is at 935 m above sea
level, and that the Iguazu flows inland from there.

And it's supposedly the coldest Brazilian state capital too.

Almost the same here. The only semi I got to watch was the second leg of Palmeiras vs Athletico.

In the Copa Libertadores, it looked as if it might be another Palmeiras-Flamengo final. Palmeiras were knocked out in the semi-final though. It is another all-Brazilian final. Flamengo play Athletico Paranaense in the final.

Though I see your point (and what I'm about to say isn't anti-weauxfing,
I swear!), I don't think they'll screw up this one. They are the far better side and are on a roll as well. Maybe this won't make of July 8th, 2014 only the second worst day of Scolari's coaching career, but I can definitely see
a solid 3-0 or something like that.

In the Copa Sudamericana, Sao Paulo, my 15th favourite football club, play Independiente del Valle in the Final.

Indeed. But this seems a closer one than the Libertadores final.

Why do Argentina and Brazil get so many more teams in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana these days?

So television and money are beginning to corrupt South American football the way it's ruined European football?
