From Werner Pichler@21:1/5 to All on Fri Sep 2 00:13:59 2022
European group phases start next Tuesday, and due to some winter
tournament or other will continue at a relentless pace with matches almost every week, until November 1st.

So, are we ready for the fastest round of Use-the-NT ever?
Daniele, are you willing to keep tabs again?

On my part, Brexit Bungs (ENG) and Winter Wonderland (AUT/SUI/LIE(!!!))
    are raring to go!

I'll copy the rules from last year:

    - Before each European match day, pick 12 players eligible to play for one national team (or a group of national teams). No more than 5 forwards, no
fewer than three defenders. Select a captain. Every goal scored by one of
your Players is worth one point, every goal scored by your captain is worth 2 points. Your total score is equal to the total number of goals, plus a Formula 1-style Bonus for placement within the round.

Submit your teams before kickoff of the first leg (two early games on
    Tuesday, September 6).

    Additional rules:

    - You can make unlimited substitutions to your squad, as long as the club of both the subbed in and subbed out player have not kicked off their match
    yet.

    - Players' nationality is based on FIFA eligibility for national team rules. If a
player is eligible to play for more than one NT, he can be selected by
managers of each of the NTs for which he is eligible. Example: Kemar Roofe
in 2020-2021 was eligible for both England and Jamaica. Since then he has declared for Jamaica, so he is only eligible for Jamaica (or CONCACAF).

    Last year's final standings:

    Name / TotGoals / TotPoints

    Merkel's Midfielders / 36 / 79.5 (Jesper / GER)
    Brexit Bungs / 30 / 61 (Werner / ENG)
    Tugas / 25 / 52.2 (HASM / POR)
    Middle Eastern Peaceniks / 28 / 51.2 (Futbolmetrix / MENA sensu stricto) Vikings / 25 / 48.5 (Jesper / DEN/NOR/SWE/ICE/FAR)
    Singed Beards / 18 / 27.45 (MH / ESP)
    Invincibile Armata Campione d'Europa / 14 / 23.45 (Futbolmetrix / ITA)
    Alpine Wonderland 14 22.75 (Werner / AUT/SUI)
    Waffles and Windmills / 11 / 16.2 (MH / BEL/NED/LUX)
    Jogo Apresentável 9 9.75 (Jesus / BRA)

Unpicked teams up for grabs: Rockers (CONCACAF), Batraciens (FRA),
    Warsaw Pact (Eastern Europe),...

Thanks for setting this up. I will enter the humbled Armata "How did you dare provoke the Weaufx Gods" Brancaleone. And the Peaceniks, sure.

I'm not sure I'll be able to post lots of live updates, but will give it a try.

I was thinking just NAFTA, but may as well open this up for the rest of concacaf as well. I will manage them.
Canadians we should have Davies, Buchanan, Larin, Hutchinson, Arfield,
Millar. Mexicans Gutierrez, Corona, .... USians Pulisic, Reyna, --
really short of defenders apart from Dest. Needs some research. There is
    James Sands of Rangers.

Might do a Celtic Mysticism one as well - all Ireland, Scotland, Wales
players. Maybe the odd Breton or Cornishman if I am really stuck. With
all of Celtic Rangers and Hearts involved, filling a team should be
possible. Plus Tierney, Robertson, McTominay, Gilmour, Hendry,

No, but unfortunately Haaland(c) is not a cheat code. On the other hand, the team submitted by the Viking manager is not valid: it must have 12 eligible players.

Thanks for the heads up. In goes Chukwueze (NGA, Villarreal). Let's also take out Kessie, who probably won't see many minutes, and replace with Osman Bukari (GHA, Red Star Belgrade), who scored a hat-trick in the qualifiers.

Unpicked teams up for grabs: Rockers (CONCACAF), Batraciens (FRA),
    Warsaw Pact (Eastern Europe),...
I cant think of enough Rockers to make a team, but I can do Eastern Europe, assuming it includes:

    Czech Republic
    Croatia
    Hungary
    Poland
    Romania
    Serbia
    Slovakia
    Slovenia
    Ukrainia
    Belarus
    Moldova
    Estonia
    Latvia
    Armenia

Strictly speaking, the Warsaw Pact team would exclude ex-Yugoslavia, but include Albania (sort of) as well as Eastern German
players (Toni Kroos, for example). But since such a team is handicapped anyway by the exclusion of Russia, de-facto exclusion
of Belarus, and the almost untenable situation of the Ukrainian teams, I guess it's up to the gamemaster to decide?

    Ciao,
    Werner

Albania, really? [Looks up the history of Albania and the Warsaw Pact...] OK, I guess they could count, even thogh I don't think I allowed any Albanian players back when I was managing the Pact.

The gamemaster allows any combination that can defeat the Vikings and that is within the bounds of reason. So yeah, an All Non-Western Europe team would be acceptable.

By the way, we did have a Tito's Brothers team (only ex-Yugoslavia) at one point. Serbia has quite a bit of attacking power these days (Vlahovic, Jovic, Kostic, Milinkovic-Savic), and Croatia can chip in as well (Perisic, Modric, Rebic...). Vedran?

Additionally to HASM's helpful list, you can sort by nationality on www.football-lineups.com but they add players only

I have to find a way to slot in Adama Traore of Ferencvaros: almost a goal a game in qualifiers (and did score quite a few in last year's competition too)

No more than 5 forwards, no fewer than three defenders. Select a captain. Every goal scored by one of your Players is worth one point, every goal scored by your captain is worth 2 points. Your total score is equal to the total number of goals, plus a Formula
1-style Bonus for placement within the round.

Submit your teams before kickoff of the first leg (two early games on Tuesday, September 6).

    Additional rules:

    - You can make unlimited substitutions to your squad, as long as the club of both the subbed in and subbed out player have not kicked off their match
    yet.

    - Players' nationality is based on FIFA eligibility for national team rules. If a
player is eligible to play for more than one NT, he can be selected by managers of each of the NTs for which he is eligible.

    All clubs now in,

    Brilliant, thanks.

though I think I'll regenerate the database before next
    week's matches.

Yeah, a couple of last-minute transfers are not yet included.
(ones I noticed: Flavius Daniliuc (moved to Salernitana) is still with Nice, and
William Bøving (bought by Sturm Graz as hopefully the next Højlund) is still listed as a Copenhagen player).

As of now, there are players from 105 different FIFA countries.

Number of players per country below, in descending order of number of players.

This is where it gets interesting:

    | ANDORRA | 1 |

    Iker Álvarez, Villarreal's third keeper

    | BURUNDI | 1 |

Youssouf Ndayishimiye, regular in the Başakşehir defence
(and already scored in the qualifiers against Maccabi Netanya)

    | CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC | 1 |

Fantasy Scout player Geoffrey Kondogbia (switched in 2018)

    | COSTA RICA | 1 |

    Keylor Navas

    | DOMINICA | 1 |

That's an error - that should be the Dominican Republic, and Mariano refuses to play for them.

    | HAITI | 1 |

    Frantzdy Pierrot

    | KAZAKSTAN | 1 |

    Dinmukhammed Kashken, Žalgiris centre-back

    | KENYA | 1 |

    Joseph Okumu, Gent centre-back
Could have been more, but AIK failed to qualify.

    | LIBERIA | 1 |

    Oscar Dorley, Slavia Praha left-back

    | LIBYA | 1 |

Almoatasembellah Ali Mohamed Al-Musrati (or just Al-Musrati), Braga midfielder

    | MADAGASCAR | 1 |

    Loïc Lapoussin, Union Saint-Gilloise
(previous Malagasy mainstay Anicet Abel Andrianantenaina is no longer with Ludogorets)

    | MALTA | 1 |

    Teddy Teuma, Union Saint-Gilloise captain
They really are such a hipster team.

    | MOZAMBIQUE | 1 |

    Reinildo, Atlético (ex-Lille)

    | NIGER | 1 |

Ali Mohamed (Maccabi Haifa) belongs in here. He's been wrongly labelled as Nigerian.

    | PANAMA | 1 |

Michael Murillo, Anderlecht right-back (two goals in qualifiers)

    | PAPUA NEW GUINEA | 1 |

The already previously mentioned David Browne, HJK

    | SIERRA LEONE | 1 |

Mohamed Buya Turay, the guy that sent his brother as stand-in to his wedding
in order to attend Malmö's training camp

    | TOGO | 1 |

Dermane Karim, Feyenoord youngster in the B team

    | UZBEKISTAN | 1 |

    Eldor Shomurodov, Roma

Notable countries missing: Belarus, China, Honduras, South Africa

I obviously need more research after this round. I did a quick check

Also looked at Reggae Boyz , but not Trinidadians yet. There might be
the odd Curacao nationals, and as Daniele pointed out there is Franzy
    Pierrot.

Reyna on the bench, but I think I will leave him there; with 5 subs, and
in a game Dortmund should boss (never know with BvB though), he might
    still get on the pitch.

So Jonathan David and Lille went from league champions one year to not making Europe the next.

That is what happens when you sell a bunch of promising players
(Maignan, Soumaré, Araújo, Ikoné, Yazici after their championship
winning season; Botman, Yilmaz, Çelik, Onana, Renato Sanches before
    this season)

100,000,000 Euros in transfer fees brought in this summer. Of which
they only spent 25,000,000 - the only big outlay being for Mohammed Bayo
(who has not even played yet, but may be a good foil for David ).

Yeah, that's the beauty of this game.

For some reason Gonçalo is listed on team B on uefa.com.
I would have put him there initially if I had query "ANY" to begin with.
